It is funny to me how quickly the narative changes on players these days, and how often bad injuries are ignored. 2 weeks ago Westbrook was supposedly washed, no chance to ever return to glory, and now people are calling the Wizards a lock for the playoffs? Like Durant, Wall tore his achilles, yet people fully expect both to be back at the same level they were pre-injury? I know some of it is fan hope, but it seems like so many have totally lost all concept of reality.

There is a reason they were traded for each other, after over a month of both being heavily shopped it is obvious that nobody else wanted either one of them. i hope they both do well, but to act like it is a given is just funny to me.

They signed Harrell to the non=taxpayer full MLE, so they are hard capped.

Seems that Westbrook-Wall is the last big change this offseason, so here is my POWER RATING two weeks before the start of the new season (more focused on West than East):

WESTERN CONFERENCE:

Tier 10
LA Lakers: They are champions, and despite Howard, Rondo, D.Green, McGee, Bradley left, they are not worse upcoming season, and maybe even better with Harrell, Schroder, M.Gasol, Matthews, and possible Kuzma improvement. What can go wrong? It is always risky when a franchise player is 36 old, and his co-star has injury issues in the past.

Tier 9
LA Clippers: They only improve even more their defense with Ibaka and Batum, but overall there is no improvement after losing Harrell and J.Green, and at 34y Lou-W will probably decline. But Lou-Kawhi-George-Morris-Zubac (+Ibaka) is the TOP5 contenders (if not #2) for sure, with the Kawhi-George duo being 2nd year together. The biggest issue: true point guard.

Denver Nuggets: Compared to the last season team lose 4 NBA starter-level players Grant, Beasley, Plumlee, Juancho, plus useful Craig, but projected Murray and Porter improvement alone should be enough to compensate for all these losses. Add to that very useful FA J.Green and potential Gary Harris offense partial recovery. In *normal* circumstances it is pointless to talk about Malone's use of the rookies but note that Bol Bol is not a real rookie and Capazzo is 29y old, so maybe some help we will get from them too this time. I have no idea what can go wrong for Nuggets in 2021, but I fear that Malone has some ideas about that.

Tier 8:
Dallas Mavericks: Luka Doncic is a legit MVP contender, and when Porzingis is healthy and in good shape, he is all-star level forward. Seems that the Mavs owner is still delusional about signing Giannis next summer so he didn't hunt for "3rd star" this offseason, but that can be changed overnight one day before the trade deadline. Their weak defense is now improved with Josh Richardson, their potentially new #3 best player, and their cap can solve some very decent improvement.

Golden State Warriors: Klay Thompson season-ending injury before the season even started downgraded GSW status from one of the TOP contenders to dark horses of 2021. There are several big mysteries about GSW in 2021. Will #2 draft pick will be ready to contribute notably already in his rookie season? Are Wiggins's 2020 improvement for real now when he is in a strong playoff team? Will they trade their rookie for a "win now" star? Is D.Green still an all-star player and DPOY contender? Is Curry still an MVP-contender level player? Too many questions here.

Utah Jazz: Already in the playoff series vs Denver seems that Mitchell and Gobert solved bad blood, while Conley finds his game in the Jazz system. Bojan Bogdanovic will be healthy again, and Derick Favors's comeback in Salt Lake City will also improve their chances.

Tier 7-8:
Portland Trail Blazers: With the arrival of R.Covington Portland finally solved their forward problem. Kanter is a decent backup center, and G.Trent is a very interesting young player.

Phoenix Suns: They added HoF Chris Paul to their roster, Crowder should be useful, and young players like Ayton or Bridges should improve. But this franchise looks dysfunctional for years, and they lost notable players in Rubio, Oubre, and Baynes. So many questions there.

Tier 7:
Houston Rockets: No doubt Harden will produce once again MVP level numbers, but the team trades their 2nd all-star Westbrook for former all-star Wall with small chances to play ever again on the old level, and the Rockets also lose their 3rd best player Covington for assets. They sign DeMarcus Cousins, but just like in John Wall's case, there are very slim chances of him being even close good like in his all-star past, before career treating injuries.

New Orleans Pelicans: Maybe they become ring contenders already in the next three years, but after trading Jrue Holiday for assets and without trying to hold Favors it is unclear are they want seriously to compete for the playoff in 2021 or only want to use this season to develop a young core with grabbing another lottery pick. That said Adams and Bledsoe are notable new players, and there is a big room for Zion and Heyes's improvement, so if they want seriously to compete in 2021 they have enough talent for sure.

Tier 6-7:
Memphis Grizzlies: A young talented team that almost shocked the league with so close being to playoff already in 2020. But WC TOP8 competition this season will be harder. Memphis needs Morant, J.Jackson, and Clarke improvement on the next level, but that scenario can happen actually.

Minnesota Timberwolves: They added #1 pick Edwards and back Ricky Rubio without losing any notable player, so if Edwards is worthy #1 pick and ready to contribute since rookie season, Wolves may surprise everyone. Beasley and Juancho can be an important part of eventual Minnesota 2021 success.

Tier 6:
San Antonio Spurs, Sacramento Kings, Oklahoma City Thunder: Interesting that bottom-3 Western Conference teams would maybe fight for a playoff spot on the East!

EASTERN CONFERENCE:

Tier 9:
Milwaukee Bucks: They are the 2020 #1 seed and they improve the PG spot with near all-star Jrue Holiday. Good chances to repeat once again the best record in the regular season with improved playoff performance.

Tier 8-10:
Brooklyn Nets: Nobody knows how good is Kevin Durant right now after such a hard injury, and especially how good he will be when the playoff starts. Maybe he is still an MVP contender, but maybe not even a TOP20 player anymore. On that question depending are Nets #2 contender or not even TOP5 contender to win the title.

Tier 8-9:
Boston Celtics: Boston didn't improve, even opposite, but they get rid of the team's worst contracts (Hayward), so maybe they improve before trade-deadline, and their young stars Tatum and Brown still improving.

Miami Heat: They take the 2020 NBA final by storm as EC team in best shape using the great opportunity for a 5th seed to play all playoff games on the bubble neutral field without true advantages for better-seeded opponents. But just like the Celtics, they didn't improve their roster.

Tier 8:
Philadelphia 76ers: The roster is weaker without Al Horford and Josh Richardson, but BIG3 are still there and clearing the cap from Horford contract they can improve before the trade deadline.

Tier 7-8:
Toronto Raptors: Toronto shocked everyone with so great 2020 season where we expected their collapse after Kawhi's exit. But Lowry will be 35y old, and very useful big mans Ibaka and M.Gasol left the team, with Aron Baynes being the only notable new player.

Tier 7:
Indiana Pacers: Oladipo has good bubble performance, and TJ Warren was spectacular, but the question is still how good these two are really right now. Already in the first month of the play, we will see the answer.

Atalanta Hawks: The bottom 3 team from last season improved into a playoff team thanks to a very successful offseason, including adding Bogdanovic, Gallinari, and Rondo without losing any important player.

Washington Wizards: With Westbrook, they become a playoff team overnight. Two all-star guards, a decent center, a good 3pt specialist, and two young and intriguing forwards should be enough for the playoff.

Tier 6-7:
Orlando Magic: The same team which reached the playoff spot last season will probably not do the same this season because EC competition is harder.

Charlotte Hornets: They improve roster with Hayward and 3rd pick LaMelo Ball, but seems they need another year for their youngsters to rise.

Tier 6:
Chicago Bulls: They arguably have some talented young players, but there is a big question will Bulls compete at all in 2021 seriously?

Tier 5-6:
Detroit Pistons, New York Knicks, and Cleveland Cavaliers are not playoff level teams by any means.

Very bold post Joker, so I'll give a shot too. But I'll use a little different labels.

Western Conference Finals Contenders
Lakers - give them credit for some improvement, but not what the media claims
Clippers - slight improvement, should be enough
Nuggets - potentially better, potentially worse - I believe they contend
Mavericks - slight improvement, but if Porzingis stays healthy, they contend
Trailblazers - Best improvement among top 10 teams IMO

Shot at Western Conference Finals - If all goes well
Warriors - Lots of questions; can't be worse than last year, could contend
Jazz - slight improvement, Mitchell plus team play makes them dangerous

Playoffs - Decent Chance
Suns - Young players probably struggle to make playoffs except they added Chris Paul, so maybe ...
Pelicans - Young talent, mix of veterans - not ready IMO
Spurs - Need to reload, but don't count Popovich out of the playoffs

Playoffs Doubtful
Grizzlies - Improved, but still in the West
Rockets - Looking worse IMO
Timberwolves - Lots of individuals, but what's their system?
Thunder - Lots of changes in a couple of years, need more time
Kings - Too many questions, a solid young PG and lots of questions

Eastern Conference Finals Contenders
Bucks - Slight improvement, but they didn't need much
Celtics - Lots of young talent, no other significant changes but should contend
Nets - Superstars ready? Contenders! Superstars not ready? Not Contenders!
Heat - Surprised teams last year, no significant improvement, but still dangerous

Shot at Eastern Conference Finals - If all goes well
Sixers - Roster seems worse, but if Embiid & Simmons can work things out ...
Raptors - Roster seems worse, but could be dangerous - if all goes well

Playoffs - Decent Chance
Hawks - Most improved roster in the East? Serious chances of playoffs
Pacers - A couple of star players probably aren't enough, but it is the East
Wizards - Two guards, one ball, need more help, but they are in the East
Hornets - Added Hayward and a rookie PG, not enough - probably

Playoffs Doubtful
Magic - No significant roster changes, one of best players out w/injury
Bulls - Appear to be content with aiming for the lottery - again
Pistons - Lots of off-season transactions, seemed more focused on picks than this year
Knicks - Let some players go, lots of salary space, not sure what they are doing or why
Cavaliers - Made no changes that will worry opponents

Marcus Morris said the Clippers were the better team. He's wrong. It was proven. Denver was the better team.

What he should have said is, "The Clippers had more talent, but did not play well enough to win."

The Clippers don't even have more talent, what he said shows how stupid he is. Instead of accepting responsibility for their loss and working to get better that team still is looking for someone to blame. I said before last season started that they were overrated, I said heading into the series they were overrated, I said after we gave them game 1 they were overrated, and we showed it. We had the deeper more talented team, just because the NBA and the NBA media cannot find Denver on the map does not change the facts.

While I am sure it is no surprise to anybody I disagree with a lot of your power rankings.

Personally I have it as
Western Conference
Favorites
1.Lakers while I actually think they got worse this offseason, they did not take a big enough hit to hurt the fact that they won last ear and did enough to defend.

Contenders
2.Nuggets. The Nuggets biggest problem was our bench last year, our starters were near elite and our stars are still young and improving. While we brought in a lot of unproven talent, our bench was bottom 5 after the trade deadline last year, if we can just have an average bench this year we are contenders.

3.Trailblazers fixed the 2 biggest holes on their roster by getting 2 defenders at forward, and while I think Covington is overrated he is a perfect fit for what they need at PF. They are also not likely to lose 3 major contributors for most of the season again.

borderline contenders
4.Jazz finally had Conley and Mitchell build chemistry by the end of the season, and they fixed their big man depth by bringing back FAvors and drafting Azubuike.

5.Mavericks have improved their SG weakness and added another front court defender, I can see them being better even with Porzingis likely out until late January.

6.Clippers while adding Ibaka and Kennard will help, they did nothing to improve their playmaking, lost a lot of their front court depth, and are counting on going from Doc to Lue as the big improvement. I think they end up worse this year than they were last year, especially since all they seem to do is make excuses.

Competing for the playoffs
7. The Warriors lost Thompson already for the year, and I am not a fan of what they have done this last year for improvements, but I think Curry and Green are enough to keep them in the playoffs.

8. The Grizzlies have a young up and coming team that is following our system of drafting and developing guys while staying competitive. I think this is the year enough of the young guys take the next step and get into the playoffs

9. The Suns added Paul, and while he is still a great player, he was helped tremendously by the layoff, he struggles to make it through a season healthy and I do not see him changing that this year. While they had a great run in the bubble while many other teams including the Nuggets were not worried about winning, I am just not a big believer in their young guys.

10. The Spurs are likely going to miss the playoffs, but they do have some talented young guys with Derozan and Aldridge both playing for their next contract with Pop coaching so they could be dangerous.

Likely out of the playoff race
Kings, their roster is still a mess
Twolves all offense and no defense makes it hard to win games
Pelicans are going young, and I do not believe Zion will stay healthy
Thunder are tanking, anybody worth anything to start the season will be dumped by the deadline.

I will do the Eastern conference later, have to get into a meeting.

Trying to be objective, the only one ranked above us that I totally disagree with is Dallas. I do think we are better than a couple others, but we have to prove that - again. If we repeat last year's success, we'll get quite a bit more respect.

Ok so it is indicated as camp edition, but I honestly feel that we are better than Miami even during the bubble. We probably would've won the title had it been a Nuggets-Heat finale.

We slipped to the 7th most likely because of the number of new faces in the team and Grant's departure as well. I guess we just have to fly under the radar again then.

Laughable rankings, Dallas and the Clippers over Denver and Bucks too who always choke in the play off's ,we don't even know how Nets will look like ,Durant coming off the horrible injury ,is he going to be healthy or close to the best of himself and they already have them number three,ESPN is the garbage in general, they always hyping certain players and their teams .

We all know that "BIG NAMES" get wins in every poll. I'm a little surprised Boston is ranked as low as they are. Time will show who is better.

Wow ESPN should be embarrassed putting out that power rankings, but I guess what do you expect from people that only pay attention to 5 our of 30 franchises?

Nah, don't think it would change anything, what have the Nets proven or Clippers or even the Bucks? Absolutely nothing.

ESPN released its traditional TOP100 list.

Jokic is underrated #10, Murray is #21 and Porter is #51 while no other Nuggets player into TOP100. LAL and BKN have 6 TOP100 players by ESPN (with Lakers occupy both TOP2 spots) and 5 teams have 5 TOP100 players (IND LAC MIA NOP UTA) while 8 other teams have 4 TOP100 players (but not Denver)! On a positive note, the Nuggets are the only team with TOP11, TOP21, and TOP51 players, but the team is once again underrated.

1. LeBron James (LAL)
2. Anthony Davis (LAL)
3. Giannis Antetokounmpo (MIL)
4. Luka Doncic (DAL)
5. Kawhi Leonard (LAC)
6. Kevin Durant (BKN)
7. Damian Lillard (POR)
8. Steph Curry (GSW)
9. James Harden (HOU)
10. Nikola Jokic (DEN)
11. Jayson Tatum (BOS)
12. Jimmy Butler (MIA)
13. Bam Adebayo (MIA)
14. Joel Embiid (PHI)
15. Chris Paul (PHO)
16. Ben Simmons (PHI)
17. Devin Booker (PHO)

Giannis signed 5-year supermax with Bucks. Good news for Nuggets and other contenders, if you ask me. If Giannis eventually signed with some LA team, Miami or Dallas, it would instantly create a new NBA dynasty.

I am hearing some nervousness over in JazzLand about Gobert. Seems he wants a super max (or slightly under) and the Jazz are balking at his price.

Any potential conflict/turmoil especially with our division rivals should be welcome news. Haha

Utah might be more reluctant to give in especially if that rookie Azubuike shows a lot of promise.
