Dwane Casey Says Killian Hayes To Start At Point Guard

Post#1 » by Laimbeer » Mon Dec 7, 2020 1:58 pm

Killian Hayes will open the season as the starting point guard of the Detroit Pistons, according to Dwane Casey.

Hayes was the seventh pick in the 2020 NBA Draft.

Derrick Rose recently stated that he looked forward to being a mentor to Hayes.

Comments to rationalize bad contracts -
1) It's less than the MLE
2) He can be traded later
3) It's only __% of the cap
4) The cap is going up
5) It's only __ years
6) He's a good mentor/locker room guy

I’m glad I was wrong.

I do wonder what kind of leash he’ll have though.

It's good to know he has looked good enough in training camp for Casey to proclaim this already.

This is typical telephone-news nonsense from RealGM. Casey has said that Hayes is starting right now, as in at training camp. As of yesterday, the starting PG for the outset of the season had not yet been decided. There has been no news since. The source is below.

Good, he better not bench him at the first sign of growing pains/rookie mistakes. We flat out suck and Kilian playing less than 30 mins a night once he gets acclimated should be a fireable offense.

Agreed 100%. I've said it before, and ill say it again. Hayes is the best player in the draft, and don't be surprised if he's very good, almost immediately because of his experience.

He is not your typical rookie. I expect nothing short of greatness from this kid. He could be the main reason this team has a better record then expected, ultimately screwing the team out of a top 5 pick in next year's draft.

I'll temper my enthusiasm for the kid for now, but with the news of him starting, and getting praise from Casey of all people, I may go off the rails rather quickly here. I'm still in shock the Pistons drafted exactly who I wanted.

You’re setting yourself up for some pain, zeeb. Rookie PGs almost always suck pretty bad, even the really talented ones. The odds of him having an impact like Ja or rookie CP3 are not good.

I can’t imagine Casey giving him much of a leash because I can’t remember him doing it before, but at least Hayes has been given a chance. I keep thinking Casey will revert back to playing his favourite vets like the last few years. I hope I’m wrong.

Hayes is my favorite pick for ROY. Great job by Pistons getting him and Doumbaya back to back drafts.

Best case scenario is for him to just split time with rose with both playing 6 minutes each quarter.

Normally I would agree with you but Hayes has several things that work in his favor;

1.)Experience. Two years of playing with full grown men professionally. This is a much bigger deal then it sounds. Generally it takes time for a young man to be comfortable around older male adults, as they try and fit in with an older mindset, amd experience. Become one of "the guys". He already has done this, and understands the process.

2.)Size. He is not a normal PG. The average height of an NBA PG is just under 6'3. Average weight is 190lbs. Big advantage out of the gate.

3.)Vision and playmaking. Combined with his size, and experience advantages, this is going to allow his transition into the NBA to be much smoother then it was for someone like Billups who struggled his first few years.

Just a few more days before I go completely off the rails...

Not that I necessarily disagree, but size, vision and playmaking were among Billups' foremost strengths as well. Also true of the eldest Ball brother. Those things help, but don't guarantee a smooth NBA transition.

I'm not surprised at all really, Rose wasn't going to start, no matter what some users here were trying to claim. So his competition was Delon Wright.
It makes sense to start him, even though Rose will probably play more minutes than him. I think his shot will probably struggle early on, but I think he can be decent facilitator right away

Also his confidence and ability to create separation for his jumper. He loves those step backs and side steps.
