Well yes, but again... Terry Pluto can mention players by name that Cleveland wants. This isn't a National guy speaking to players our front office are willing to dangle in this deal.

Not like we have a local guy with a great track record of reporting on which way the wind is blowing. If Ken Rosenthal for example, was reporting that the Jays were willing to move Gurriel etc. then I'd feel a whole lot different about the legitimacy of what is being said and where it is coming from.

To your point, this just seems like a report perpetuating an agenda. Cleveland could want Mike Trout for Lindor, they're not going to get him though.

Not saying you’re wrong, but Terry Pluto probably has a relationship with Shatkins from their time in Cleveland, too.

That's all true, except I don't think the Jays would use Rosenthal in that regard. What's also interesting in Pluto's story is that Lindor is amenable to signing an extension in Toronto (or with the Dodgers). So that raises the ante here. It's also why I can't figure out who might have fed him that. For the Indians' management, it might be a case of preparing the local fanbase for a deal by emphasizing that there is something immediate and beneficial coming for a superstar, not only prospects. The prospect part is always a bit of a crapshoot with a long runway to payback. But putting Gurriel in the trade gives the fans a young player with upside and who is controllable, so he won't be dealt away again at the earliest opportunity.

Good point on Pluto having a relationship with Shatkins... didn't even occur to me.

But yes, agreed overall.

My preference would certainly be for us trading for guys with team control and signing guys in free agency. A stop gap solution at SS would work for a year too.

I'd rather gamble on getting Lindor next year in free agency unless we are getting him to lock in at a value that is discounted now. I just hate the thought of giving up guys who can fill our core for years to come when there is a reasonable chance we could just go out and sign them when they hit the open market. This of course is altogether different if we see ourselves as well on our way to winning the division and being one of the best teams in baseball. Not quite sure we can confidently say that at this exact moment.

I still don't understand the rumored interest in Lindor. He only has a year of control left, and he is now part of the MLBPA committee so he's not signing any sort of team friendly extension before testing the free agent market. Trading a cheap starting OF plus other young assets for a one year rental that will require $300M to extend is borderline nuts given where the Jays are. Lindor is not Mookie Betts.

You're making a presumption that a Lindor trade would include a lot more, but that seems unlikely without the extension.

This post is assuming:
1) the Jays are willing to trade Gurriel
2) the Jays are willing to trade for Lindor without reaching an extension first.

Both are assumptions that we have no reason to believe at this point. We could hear rumours that the Indians would “love” to get Vladdy Guerrero and Bo Bichette for Lindor. Doesn’t mean it’s going to happen.

So, if there is no upfront guarantee of an extension - but no outright rejection by Lindor of the idea of remaining with Toronto beyond 2021 - do you trade Gurriel and maybe a second tier prospect for Lindor? If we get a prime free agent like Springer, plus add some pitching, I'd do it. Kawhi trade for a title shot.

That's my point; the rumors don't make any sense. Lindor is not signing an extension unless it's the equivalent of a FA contract, and the Jays aren't trading anyone of significant value for him without an extension, so I'm not understanding the rumors that refuse to go away.

Interesting that he requested a meeting with Ryu, according to the Score App.

I don't know much about him aside from the fact that he was a star in the KBO, and that a drop off would be expected. That being said, waiting for one of the astute posters here to possibly fill in a chap like me about why he makes sense and is a good fit :P

Kim's upside is that he's in-prime, should stick at 2B/3B even if not at SS, is projected to be at least a solid hitter (and could be well beyond that), and his projected salary and term is quite reasonable and basically would cover the rest of his prime.

People might be reading a bit too much into the meeting -- Ryu would be the rational person for Kim to meet with to discuss life in MLB in general, not just the Jays -- but I'm definitely interested.

Would Kyle Schwarber fit with White Sox? It’d be a tricky puzzle - 670 The Score Chicago Sports

Which begs the questions: Does outfielder Kyle Schwarber make any sense for the White Sox in free agency after he was non-tendered by the Cubs last week?

The Cubs parted ways with the 27-year-old Schwarber because he was expected to earn $8 million or $9 million in arbitration and they didn’t believe his production was commensurate with his cost amid a difficult financial climate in MLB. When it came to the trade discussions before Schwarber was non-tendered, other teams had the same concern as the Cubs, sources said, believing it wasn’t worth giving a player up to acquire him at the projected arbitration cost for 2021.

Schwarber is coming off a rough season in which he hit .188 with 11 homers and a .701 OPS, but he hit 38 homers and posted an .871 OPS in 2019.

Just because teams passed on him recently on the trade market doesn’t mean they’re not interested in Schwarber in free agency. The Angels, Yankees and Blue Jays are three teams that have interest in Schwarber, sources said. Current Angels and former Cubs manager Joe Maddon is known to have a great affinity for Schwarber. Cubs president of baseball operations Jed Hoyer has also left the door open for Schwarber to re-sign if the price is right for each side, though that may be unlikely.

A potential fit between Schwarber and the White Sox is a little trickier, as it would depend on how much they value defense in right field, what type of platoon system they envision putting in place and their plan to fill the designated hitter spot.

Blue Jays could be nearing first major move in off-season of possibilities - Sportsnet.ca

While Blue Jays assistant GM Joe Sheehan treaded carefully in describing “momentum” that was “developing” in the market, one agent suggested that the end game might arrive with one of their position-player targets as soon as this week.

If and when that happens, the rest of their off-season plan will come into tighter focus, as at the moment, the combination of varied market options, roster versatility and spending power allow them to “pursue a lot of different potential places to upgrade,” said Sheehan.

“It's not like in a normal year, you might have one hole and the rest of your roster is kind of locked and you're looking for players that can do one specific thing,” he continued. “We’re really fortunate that our roster is flexible and that we can pursue good players in a lot of areas.”

Pursue good players is something the Blue Jays have done, targeting top free agents like George Springer, D.J. LeMahieu, J.T. Realmuto and Trevor Bauer, among others. Ace Hyun-Jin Ryu told Korean broadcaster KBS that he recently had dinner with Ha-Seong Kim at the request of the shortstop posted by the Heroes, which also raised eyebrows.

General manager Ross Atkins, meanwhile, did nothing to quell the ongoing speculation about a trade for star Cleveland shortstop Francisco Lindor during an appearance on MLB Network, saying, “Frankie’s a great player, there’s not a team in baseball that wouldn’t be thinking about how he can complement them.”

“What I’m going to do is just step out of the way and let you guys make some deals for us right now,” Atkins then quipped. “We think the world of the organization. We think the world of Frankie, and we do have some history with him.”

Whatever decisions the Blue Jays make will have far-reaching implications for the franchise’s short and medium term, both in terms of players currently on the roster as well on financial considerations in the years to come.

According to the Score app the Mets are close to signing James McCann to a 4 year deal.

I really rather us spend our money on proven players Kim will cost a pretty penny and all we have are projections seems too risky for such an important off-season for us.
