Is Gilbert Arenas overrated?

Post#1 » by youngthegiant » Wed Dec 9, 2020 1:01 am

So I guess Westbrook didn't want to wear #0 because that was Gilbert Arenas' number. Don't really remember much about him but looked up his stats...and he had 3 really good years..then fell off a cliff. Are Wizards really going to retire his number for 3 years and 1 first rd exit? Doesn't make sense to me. Number 0 is Westbrook, don't get why he opted to change his number because of Arenas.

Arenas is nice and all, but Olden Polynice was who really made it cool to wear number zero. 8-)

Talent wise, id argue hes underrated, it was short but he dominated like few others have as a scoring pg before him

Due to his off the court issues in Washington and his short prime, I highly doubt he'll ever get his number retired. Arenas even said the other day he was fine with Westbrook wearing it. But I think in terms of icons of that era he was one of the flashier and more well known players and I can definitely see why WB wouldn't want to wear 0.

Compared to Westbrook, Arenas is overrated. He was only an All-Star while young. However, he blew out his knee so it wasn't his fault. I don't think he slacked off in his workouts and such. The NBA is a hard game.

Most overrated player ever. Never seen a player get so overrated because of 3 seasons with no playoff success

Agent 0. He was pretty damn good. After the whole gun locker room incident things went down hill. He was a second round pick as well. Or the last pick in the first round one of those two.

Even for those 3 seasons his shooting percentage left something to be desired, even by the standards at the time. He's kinda like D'Antoni where he somewhat ushered in a new style of play but others have since taken it and executed it way better.

Gilbert Arenas was already washed up when the gun incident happened.

The actually downfall of his career was few years prior when Gerald Wallace injured his knee.

I'm guessing that Arenas being from LA is the main reason why WB has a lot of respect for him. He might have been one of his bb heroes growing up. Its not just because he was a pretty good player for 3 years.

He didn't fall off a cliff. He got injured by a reckless idiot of a player. Arenas was a superstar whose career was ruined due to injuries at 26. He was never the same after like Drose.

My comparison would be a more physical Dame Lillard. He had unlimited range, elite handle, clutch, and physical for a guard. He was a monster.

I'm not aware of the Wizards ever suggesting they would retire his number. It's likely Westbrook not wearing it because he idolized him at some point in time.

43.2/36.1 is not a problem, and he drew a lot of FT's. I don't know if I would credit Arenas with ushering in a new style of play though. What style of play would that be? The 3's, at the basket and FT's scorer?

I suppose, but Arenas shot a good amount from mid-range, posted up, etc.

He fell off a cliff because injuries derailed his career. Pretty big thing to omit there, OP. First ballot HOF otherwise.

Well, your asking 2 questions? Is he overrated? God no. Arenas would rip up the league right now, however injuries robbed him. He was Steph before Steph. He is for all intensive purposes a better version of Lillard.
Now is he good enough to have his number retired? God no.

Gil was a top 10 type player IMO. He was like Dame before Dame, maybe minus the overall poise and leadership.

I mean, he's not overrated in that anyone who paid attention knows he had a very short, but excellent prime. And what would the wizards retiring or not retiring his number have to do with westbrook not wanting to wear it? That'd be his connection to arenas and we know NBA players have different feelings about players than fans do. All of that is a moot point tho as arenas told him to go ahead and wear it.

I may be wrong but I'm pretty sure players like Dame and West chose to wear 0 payin homage to Gilbert
