Don't really remember much about him but looked up his stats...and he had 3 really good years..then fell off a cliff. Are Wizards really going to retire his number for 3 years and 1 first rd exit? Doesn't make sense to me. Number 0 is Westbrook, don't get why he opted to change his number because of Arenas.

Gilbert is a legend to Wizards fans, so, just sounds like Russ trying to respect his new team and their fans.

Nothing wrong with that.

As a Cavs fan that moved to the DC area, yes, I do think he was over-rated.

Not really a waste. In the sense that usually implies a guy just wasted his career. I would also say he was good but I think there's something of a hard ceiling on smaller guards whose main job in an offense is to be a gunner who puts up 50 when they are hot and go 6-22 when they are not while not bringing much else to a team.

Pretty certain that was sarcasm.

Agent zero was a really fun player to watch. Too bad about the gun incident, I think that mess with his head a lot.

i agree, but there's more to it than just that. he didn't rehab properly, was lazy and made multiple dumb decisions that completely derailed his career.

Arenas is nice and all, but Olden Polynice was who really made it cool to wear number zero. 8-)

I may be wrong but I'm pretty sure players like Dame and West chose to wear 0 payin homage to Gilbert

Nah. Dame wear 0 to rep his hometown set, Oaktown.

Gilbert Arena is a 2nd rounder who far surpassed everyone's expectations on him & became All-NBA caliber player.

He was on his path becoming a Hall of Famer until Gerald Wallace injured his knee.

If anything, he massively overachieved.

you probably don't remember why he fell to the 2nd round. it wasn't due to lack of talent or potential.

The Gilbert Arenas Provision is a thing for a reason.

Yes, today with social media he wants to be recognized as better than Kobe. In reality he was more in Lavine,Monta Ellis, Lou Williams mode. His Wizards and Warriors never did anything important.

He was as good a scorer as I'd ever seen in that brief stretch before he got injured. It's not absurd to put him in the conversation with guys like Kobe or Iverson during that period, at least in terms of scoring.

But yeah, he made plenty of stupid decisions that ultimately killed his career. The injuries capped his ceiling but the gun stuff just ended him outright. Though given the guy he got into it with, Crittendon, IIRC actually went and killed someone and is now in jail...well, that team had issues.

He’s in the bracket with tmac for me...maybe a bit above as a wizards fan

But he was one of few players who can go toe to toe with ANYBODY on the court and still have a chance of winning, not jus stat padding but literally keeping his team in the game while challenging opposing teams to stop him
Pay your beals....or its lights out!!!
Bron, Bosh, Wade is like Mike, Hakeem, barkley...3 top 5 picks from same draft
mike, hakeem and Barkley on the same team!!!!

Not trying to be a grouch, but the number thing isn't much of anything, really. And Orlando Woolridge was the first, tho he considered it to be an O. He scored 60 against the Lakers one year, but even then, 50-60 gms were more common than in the 90s and back. I still mentally class him with guys like Josh Howard. Non-descript gunners that are a dime-a-dozen. I mean, really, does anyone consider Gilbert Arenas as a game-changing NBA player? Or even a clutch playoff performer? Or even much of any kind of playoff performer? Gil is perhaps memorable only for the fanbases he played for.

Sure. I liked watching him play, he got hot real quick. He was a damn good player for the Wizards at that time. I’m not arguing anything more or less.
