It's funny - Like most Mavs fans, we wanted the team to hang onto the young guys and reclamation projects but releasing JJ stings a bit.

Couldn't they have just signed him to a big deal as an assistant?

Not without ticking off some of their current assistants making less I wouldn't think.

But also he really wants to play so this was giving him a shot --and they were honest with him about his chances.

I want my boss to give me $2M before firing me.

I have to stay publicly strong for fellow Barea stan Clyde Frazier. Inside I'm slowly dying.

He's a LeBorn stopper! Someone could use him.

Nevermind. JJ breaking with emotion talking with the media about his release is killing me....

It was like you were channeling me with the power of being a Barea stan. I just remembered i wanted to come back to this thread. About to post some great quotes from him below :(

It'd be cool to see him get another shot somewhere, but if that's it it's been a hell of a career! I also feel... old.

why would you pay vet min. and waste a roaster spot for someone to mentor your young players? Hire him as one of the coaching staff and he can do the same. And if JJ Barea still wants to play, he won't be happy to be just a mentor anyway. G league won't be interested in him since he is old and not a prospect. He should try his luck in Euro, China and other leagues around the world if he really wants to play.

Teams do this literally every year. When was the last time Udonis Haslem was a viable player for instance? It's definitely valuable having a veteran leader on the roster. It definitely makes a difference between a coach telling you something and a player saying the same thing.

Also, Dallas did cut him right? So you got your wish. :(

I’m afraid the GOATs career is coming to an end, for shame, that injury robbed us of seeing more of him.

Enjoy retirement sir :D

Cuban is very classy for that. Good for him.

I agree. He ends up as player development on Rick's staff.

I can see him fitting in Memphis. Especially if they make the playoffs this year.

If you're an undersized PG, go to the Mavs.

Agreed, but pretty sure we don't have the space.

Robinson/Noel
Randle/Toppin
Barrett/Knox/Bullock
Rivers/Burks/Quickley
Payton/Ntilikina/Smith

Are all locks. Then we have Labissiere, MKG, Spellman, Brazdekis all on deals, plus we signed Powell to a training camp deal and he's an interesting prospect. For as mediocre as that roster is, I'm just not seeing the place for Barea at this point.
Go Knicks!
