Re: Around the NBA - Offseason Chatter
I for one, LOVE seeing this whole Harden thing unfold, hope to see a lot more of it. The people wanted "player empowerment"... give the people what they want. I want to see how, Milwauke or Brooklyn can pull this off so I can watch heads explode in anger with how little they give up. Give me more LeBron/KD duos, Kawhi/George duos, potential Giannis/Jrue/Harden or Kyrie/KD/Harden trios. Then lets watch them destroy the NBA with their ridiculous demands and stupid decision making. You don't want the team to be empowered to make the best deal for a guy owed years on a contract and would rather he hold his team and the league hostage? Enjoy! It's finger licking good to me

Re: Around the NBA - Offseason Chatter
Sheridan in his article said Knicks could put a formidable package together of RJ, Frank, Randle, Knox, 2 Dallas picks for Harden, but since Harden didn’t go to Kentucky he doesn’t think Rose would be interested
“New York is rebuilding under new general manager Leon Rose and head coach Tom Thibodeau, and sacrificing multiple future first-round picks would seem risky for a franchise that plans to build around youngsters Obi Toppin, Immanuel Quickley and RJ Barrett. But Rose owns the rights to two future Dallas first-rounders, and in theory, a swap of Julius Randle, Barrett, Frank Ntilikina and Kevin Knox along with three first-round picks would give the franchise a superstar to build around. Harden might average 50 on the Knicks. Then again, Harden did not attend Kentucky”

He wants to be with guys who can can pull rank and overthrow coaching, like all these divas from LeBron/AD and Kyrie/KD to Kawhi/George to Harden/Westbrook. I no longer approve of putting this otherwise awful organization or its young player through Harden and co.'s brand of basketball. I suspect Miami will pass leaving Philly to pony up for the Embiid/Harden bools#it show. No thank you from us and best of luck to the aforementioned teams.

Re: Around the NBA - Offseason Chatter
Seriously, I've hated losing and tanking...but I would take losing over acquiring losers fixated on making us losers until they shape the team to their liking. Houston is now paying the price for that. They got Harden help with Dwight, CP3, Westbrook, Capella and none of it worked. Now that Harden is upset he's telling them to take bupkiss so he can join other divas that joined forces (I'm looking at you Brooklyn because that's really where Harden wants). Please!

Destroy the NBA how? Lol. The Warriors/Cavs era had the highest ratings. Casual fans love super teams. Also players wouldn’t demand trades if there wasn’t scrutiny to win a ring so damn much from the fans. Lebron went to form a super team because of it and so did Durant and now Harden. Nobody appreciates good players unless they win a ring even tho plenty of non elite players have them.

Re: Around the NBA - Offseason Chatter
If players are going to repeatedly ask out of contracts etc, NBA owners might want to look into a new CBA/lockout where the contracts are mandatorily shorter but without explicit raises or anything based on service.
I mean, if signing a guy to a 4 or 5 year means them bitching out of it in year 3 or or year 2, why bother?

But seriously if the plan is to make a run at Giannis this is the way to do it. Freak clearly knows he needs better perimeter player on his team and Harden is one of the best guys that can create off the bounce. Imagine those two running PNR together? It pretty much be unstoppable and put us into title contention immediately.

Oooooor, we could be stuck with little assets, Giannis snubbung us (like every damned superstar to date...remember that) and a disgruntled Harden with Julius Randle body language reminding big players why not to come here while he awaits the day he can exit. Imagine that! Even more ESPN hate (as it that were even possible) and the luxury of starting this p[ocess over again!

What a great game plan.

What exact game plan is their now? Have cap space you can’t use, sign 1 year vets at the expense of playing younger kids, continue to tank endlessly?

Re: Around the NBA - Offseason Chatter
I guess it was the predecessor of this thread where we were talking about the "Asset of age" blog posts that aq_ua found.
One of the things that had us wondering was that although players entering the league at 19 (or 18) came out on top of the PER charts, they seemed to have a shorter career.

I did finally get around to taking a look at the code and data. There are a couple of things going on here that the article doesn't spell out. Nothing too bad in terms of the treatment of the data, but worth noting.
1) Only players playing at least 1501 minutes in a season are part of the graphing/data being graphed. That's not unreasonable, perhaps, because Basketball Reference uses 1500 minutes as the cut off for PER being meaningful. (The 1 in 1501 is a coding 'error'.)
2) What is being graphed is the mean PER (for each entry group and at each age year), provided that there are at least 11 players who fall in the category. (Presumably 11 instead of 10 is a small 'error' - but it could be a choice I suppose.) So what it means when there are no points plotted for the 19 and under people past the age of 32 is that there were few than 10 of those who played at least 1501 minutes.
3) What the graph doesn't show - and this isn't a criticism - is the number of players in each entry group in each age. When you look at that you see that there are many more players first playing in the league at age 22 than at 19.
Here's the graph for playing at least 200 minutes (4mins a game for 50 games) at each age, segmented by starting age.. And below that for 1500 minutes. The shapes are pretty similar, although the 1500 minute graph seems noisier.
[Ignore the caption on the y-axis - this is just a straight player count, nothing to do with PER.]

I haven't looked at this further, but what appears to be happening is simply that many more players have started at 22 than at 19 and so more survive (in total, but not necessarily on average) at the end of their careers.
[edit] since I made you may as well have the PER by age, segmented by entry age graph with the restriction that the players should have only at least 200 minutes.
