$50m will always be there. Go for $80m.

I think it is less about the per year amount and more about the length of the contract. He is probably looking for a shorter contract.
Edit: Extend Mazzulla

He's actually a good player and I'm hoping this pays off. Balled out last year imo

I mean Malik Beasley just got $60 million for over performing in 10 odd games, getting arrested & having a bunch of off court issues

He can get more. Could very well expand his game from purely 3nD akin to Kawhi. Trent is only 21 afterall and already is an impact player.

Damn that's a lot of money to turn down!
Then again, fair play to him for having the stones to bet on himself. He really looked good based on the play that I saw of him last year. His dad, Gary Trent Sr. played in the NBA for Portland, Toronto, Dallas and Minnesota for 9 years. I remembered he was drafted in the 2nd round with the thought that he could've used another year of college to fill out and build more on his game, but it's working out so far. Another good indicator is looking at his shooting splits to see how far he could develop his shot and in one year at Duke, he averaged 14.5/4 on 41/40/87 shooting.
And a little bonus, if Gary ends up playing better next year, he'll get way more dough plus they could move Rodney Hood+filler to accommodate his new deal and he'll be an RFA at the end of next year. Plus it also helps that the potential 2021 FA market is beginning to dry up outside of Giannis and perhaps Kawhi so anybody else could be compensated handsomely if they show out.

Kcp contract is 40M for 3 years with 30M guaranteed, so its worse than the 50M for 5 years..

He's going after that Allen Crabbe money.
If he can put up about 12-15 points on good percentages playing 20-25 minutes a game he'll get a better offer from a lot of other teams.

Does anyone read articles anymore, or do we all fall for clickbait? Nowhere in the article does it suggest he turned down this contract. The number is simply cited as the max he could have gotten in an extension.

Disagree. Longer contracts don't have the same weight as they used to. Players exceed their contract value two years into a current contract. The blessing and the curse of shorter contracts. It will take a superstar to sign a Mahomes-like 10-year deal to change the game. CBA won't allow it currently.
You're thinking about those extra two years. He's thinking about that third year, where he would make almost that entire contract after the third year. Big difference.

Allen Crabbe got very lucky. Trent can actually D up.

It is very hard for him to continue where he left off. Dude was shooting like 60% from 3 lol.
He literally shot 60% tonight from 3.

He was awful in the playoffs and below average in the season. I think this offer was more than fair. He obviously improved, and I suppose he can do it again, but it's a gamble.

Trent has mad game, but a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush. Who his agent?

He should have taken that and ran. That’s robbery. What has he proven? He can hit from deep but what else can he do?

Isn't that slightly above MLE money? I could see someone offer him the same amount over 4 years, if he has a decent season.

I don’t think he was even offered that.
Highly doubt he gambles on the first “big” contract. It’s more likely he was offered much less and he said no thanks

He's well above average as a defender.

Crazy to turn down multi-generational money off a low rookie contract. One injury and you never sniff it again.
