Killian Hayes has all the makings of a competent player who won't take long to acclimate to the NBA.

The free-agent signings don't make much sense by comparison in truth. I can't understand why they didn't make offers for either Shroeder or FVV

This summarizes it nicely from that article:

"If they hit on(seventh overall pick Killian) Hayes, and (other first-rounders Isaiah) Stewart and (Saddiq) Bey are good, none of this other s--- matters that much. But I don't know what their plan is."

So the two "worst" teams got three votes each (the Pistons and the Rockets) and the next worst team got two votes. Which means every other team that received a vote for worst got one.

Let me take a wild guess on what "worst" means--didn't improve the team as much as possible, i.e. go after as many wins as possible in 2020-21.

Good.

Giving Grant and Plumlee those contracts, and then stretching contracts that hurt the future cap for 5 years just doesn't make much sense. Unless Grant still has some huge possible growth and can improve his skillset that is a really bad contract. Thank goodness we didn't give it out for four years.

If we ended at the draft and then only signed bargain bin FA's I think everyone would feel much better about our offseason and future flexability.

can't blame them, it was definitely an offseason of mixed signals and confusing decisions. The stretching and waiving of 2 players to sign Plumlee is the most confusing by far

Do we know if Weaver voted for the Pistons, too?

Another team's exec saying "I don't know what they're doing" is a lot kinder than saying, "I know they don't know wtf they're doing."

Again, the only move that makes no sense is signing Plumlee. If you don’t do that, and don’t stretch two players because you sign someone cheaper instead, I’m 100% on board. Not that I’d make identical moves, but Weaver’s would make sense.

Hopefully it’s the one bad move in an off-season that starts to get things turned around.

Pretty much everything they did reeks of incompetence. Loaded up on picks in a weak draft, traded away future picks, blew all salary cap space on mediocre deals. And stretching to accomplish all of this? Come on - Weaver is nuts.

Yes, there are three new rookies to fawn over. And hopefully Sekou resembles an adult. And I hope they stink bad enough to get a top three pick. But my guess is they’ll screw things up so bad that they’ll be in the 7-10 range. Again.

Well it was pretty terrible, I cant see the argument of it being a good off-season.

To be clear to those who didn’t read it, this is just a poll of 8 scouts or executives.

Not saying it means nothing, but they didn’t exactly poll the league.

I think we’re all aware of the issues with our offseason.

Jalen Suggs, Jalen Green, Cade Cunningham, and like 5 others. This is the year to be bad. I like Green, but man Suggs is nasty.

Next year’s class is projecting to be legendary and we should be terrible. It’s finally coming together.

Yeah the class after is going to be great as well. Perfect time to suck.

Not to say hes my favorite of the prospects or anything(i havent decided) but I watched alot of Jalen Suggs on overtime on youtube and really love the way he goes about things. Hes a great team type player who even in highschool acted professionally. I'd love to land him or anything of these top prospects this season.

Free agency was terrible. Between the idiotic contracts for Grant and Plumlee, and the insane decision to stretch contracts in year one of a rebuild for the sake of handing idiotic contracts to those two, Weaver blew an average of $32.4 million in cap space across three seasons and offseasons that could've been used for purposes infinitely more conducive to a rebuild. The reward was a mediocre center who provides little of substance and an overpaid forward who will munch minutes and usage away from the team's young players, four out of six of whom play at his position. There is NO outcome to the Grant deal that will be ideal for the Pistons.

This was all extremely avoidable. Veteran presences and veteran leadership could've been had for drastically cheaper and without putting up barriers to the development of the team's youth. In fact, the sheer number of veterans now on the roster will ensure that the team's youth will face an uphill battle at receiving development minutes from a coach who is always far too partial to his veterans.

Beyond the acquisition of Jackson, who may or may not develop into anything, Weaver did nothing right in free agency and a great deal wrong. I find it horribly disappointing that this org cannot even execute a simple development year without getting in its own way by means of unforced mistakes.

The best that can be said about free agency was that it wasn't a complete disaster. But it was bad. And "Who cares? We suck!" isn't an adequate excuse by any definition; building a non-winning team isn't a difficult process, and could easily have been accomplished without screwing up.

Not even going to state my case again.

We all agree stretching Dedmon then signing Plumlee was mind blowing and signing Ellington then stretching Smith is the same.

Grant? Time will tell if he's FOS or is willing to get to work on his game. It's a gamble I wouldn't have thought to take, especially after the Draft.

Hayes, DRose, Wright
Svi, Jackson, Smith
Sekou, Bey, McGruder
Blake, Stewart
Dedmon, Okafor

I could easily live with that for a year but

Troy Weaver is just smarter than all of his peers. Hes a misunderstood genius.

I really hope.

But seriously I see a problem similar to nepotism going on here.

Sirvydis is here because Arn's son.

Grant is here jacking up iso shots with no iso skills because he knows Weaver personally.

Delon Wright is here as a safety valve for Casey because Casey knows him from back in the day.

That's never a good sign when players are favored for personal reasons and more productive producers are marginalized.

If I see Wright & Grant getting more minutes than Josh & Sekou, I'm going to be mad.
You need 2-way wings, 2-way shooting bigs, and you can't allow low iq players on the court. Assist/turnover ratio is crucial. Shooting point guards are icing on the cake IF they are plus defenders.
Weaver & Casey, govern yourselves accordingly!

The Pistons got three of eight votes. Only three teams received any votes.

Which team had the worst offseason?
T1. Detroit Pistons: 3

T1. Houston Rockets: 3

3. Milwaukee Bucks: 2

Now will people please stop dismissing criticism of the off-season as someone just wanting to complain? Yeah it's just eight people but I'm gonna guess any one of them knows more basketball than any of us.
