Robinson started at center on Wednesday. It was his first start of the preseason. In New York’s first two games, Robinson came off the bench behind Nerlens Noel. On Wednesday, Robinson picked up two early fouls in the first quarter and third quarter. He was able to have an impact in the second half while playing through foul trouble. The third-year center finished with 13 points, 10 rebounds and four blocks and impacted the game during New York’s strong fourth quarter.

“I like the fact that he was able to play 32 minutes (but) we’ve got to eliminate the ticky tack fouls,” Thibodeau said. “He’s a hard guy to score over. Great rim protector. I think as he continues to understand the position and grow, he’s been doing a great job in practice. I think he’ll get better and better. Sky’s the limit for him.”

Before the game, Thibodeau said Robinson continues to work on shooting from the perimeter in practice. Thibodeau believes Robinson is making progress toward being able to implement his shooting in a game.

“What he’s doing right now is preparing to do it – he’s coming early, working on it at practice, staying late. He’s come back in the evenings,” the coach said. “…. I think his touch around the basket is improving right now. I think it’s a feel and there’ll be a progression to it. But if he continues to work he has been working, he will improve. And get comfortable with it.”

Here’s Thibodeau on something he and the coaches have worked with Barrett on: “Something we’re really emphasizing with him – he’s great at getting into the paint and then to make the rim read. When you get to the rim, how many guys are on you? If there are two-to-three guys on you, make the play. Just make the right read and make the game easy for everyone.”

When asked about it on Wednesday, Thibodeau said he believes Barrett can be a play-maker at the NBA level.

“I think what you’re seeing now is you’re seeing a lot of wings on the floor. It’s usually a point guard, a two, a three and a four – and all those positions are really interchangeable,” Thibodeau said. “And in some cases, all five guys are interchangeable - where it’s positionless. And we’re seeing Julius (Randle) make plays off the dribble. And I do think RJ can make plays.”

this is what i was trying to do last year with rj & trier. it could also work with quickley or rivers. just get payton out of the damn starting lineup.

The Frank vs. DSJ debate seems to have resolved Quickley this year.

Yeah it'd be good to see Rivers replace Payton.

I have empathy for Dennis. Seems like he lost something perhaps physical, and there's mental stuff to a degree. But at least he's out there giving effort and we did see it in Detroit, but it didn't work. But he's working harder. Good to see. I will support any guy who reckons with his roughest moments and keeps putting in effort.

I felt like Knox wasn't, and I was getting really heated, right before Knox plugged in and exploded ... reverse jinx (and capital letters KNICKS is going in all game threads for now too).

Chanel Bomber wrote:I'm glad that Hahn is not afraid to criticize Elfrid Payton. He sees what we see.

And the thing is he's holding back by virtue of being a MSG employee, so you know he really wants to go off on this dude.

Payton can't run an offense, can't play off-ball, can't shoot... All he does is dribble the air out of the basketball to look for the direct assist to inflate his numbers or pass it to Randle. He just kills the flow of the offense. And of course he's a complete liability when teams play zone.

We already know Perry is hyping up this dude internally so I really hope that Leon Rose sees what Hahn is talking about. When you got MSG employees criticizing your offseason signing before the season has even started, you know it's bad.

The dude needs to be cut asap.

it's not that payton can't run an offense, he obviously can ... perhaps not that good.

but the biggest problem with payton and randle is that they're both half court set players on a team with guys that want to run.

whenever payton sets the offense he takes 18 seconds before dumping it off, whenever randle sets the offense he takes 18 seconds just to post up. and because they're vets, the younger players give in and are now half court set players too

RJ has throw the ball out for a corner three this preseason than the Knicks did all of last season. Now if only someone could hit those shots

Obi ... he hasn't had a big game yet and there's nothing great that stands out. But I trust his motor and his IQ. Seems like a winner with enough skill and athleticism to make it felt. I'm not worried about him being at least good.

He's a little in love with the skip pass and there look to be some limitations in him getting off difficult shots that require maneuvering. Seems more like spot jumpers or slashing than too much in between. Footwork and skill seems like it fits there more than a guy who can go off the dribble or beat you with crafty shots.

There is nothing at all that would require one to guard Elfrid outside of 5 feet. You give him that shot all day every day.
