You're right. And I stand corrected. But the point still stands. As much as we covet KH and see him on an upward trajectory, it's very likely other teams view him the same way and will be making a fat RFA offer to him when the time comes. If we're only halfway through the Bogdan contract and are paying Trae and Collins top money -- and are prepping strong offers to retain Cam and D Hunter -- something's gotta give.

I fear Kevin Huerter, my favorite current Hawk player, will be the odd man out when the bill comes due.

Bogi will have 2 years (1+1 with PO) left on his deal, so basically 1 year left and can opt out and leave by the time KH hits RFA. What if KH has improved enough, where it makes sense to trade Bogi with his 1 year left and extend KH?
Just throwing options that may be available 2 years from now.

I think stay the course with Kevin at the moment. If Reddish or Hunter or someone else really shows out and separates themself, or if a team gives him a huge offer, KH could end up odd man out but they should stick with him for now.

You're more optimistic than I am. I see the bills coming due for our young talents and believe we'll have to consolidate via trade sooner than later. With the way things are currently structured, I foresee either John Collins or Kevin Huerter going elsewhere in RFA. Some team will overpay them the same way we just overpaid for Bogdan Bogdan.

The only way to prevent that worst case scenario from coming to fruition -- trading some of our young guys.

It's not a matter of being optimistic, it's a matter of the options available at a point in time.

The money simply doesn't add up. If Trae and Collins are still here in 2022, they'll combine to make at least $60+ million per year.

We'll be prepping offers to retain Huerter with Cam, Hunter and Okongwu all up for extensions/RFA shortly after that. If any of those guys make it to RFA, they'll have suitors ready to make aggressive contract offers to steal them away -- the same way we just stole Bogdan Bogdan.

Do we honestly believe we c an afford to keep/extend all six young players and still have enough left over to build a competitive team?

I am with Jay. I do not feel we are in a tough situation. Ultimately, we have elite flexibility.

Nowhere did I say that.
I also previously said we have 2 years to decide which of our young wings will be worth keeping.

Even if Trae will be a special case as the team will make anything to keep him, because he's worth more than team results, but what is sure for me is that if both don't improve their defensive impact, they won't be worth a Max contract, even if Trae, but not John, gets it. Don't say they should not be paid, but paid correctly and not overpaid

Take the ball out of KH’s hands and run him exclusively off screens. Dude is a devastating C&S player.

So just let him catch and shoot.

Every three pointer I saw him attempt tonight was short and just made contact with the front of the rim.

Heurter needs to make this decision for the Hawks. Hit high percentage three. Make some passes and play some D and we won't be asking if he's the odd man out.

Also needs to be more durable

The Los Angeles Clippers and Luke Kennard have agreed to a four-year, $64 million extension. Kennard's deal includes $56 million in guaranteed money with a majority of the incentives considered reachable.

KH and D Hunter have both looked good thus far.

I fear he’s becoming more expensive by the day.

Why fear? If they are good enough, pay them or move them for value.
Hawks can't be afraid to pay these guys if they play well and we are winning. They just need to figure out the appropriate balance.

Moving them in a consolidation trade seems like the next play.

Collins and Huerter specifically seems most likely.

Yeah, he'd fit well as a 6th man, 3-pt specialist on a lot of teams. I'm hopeful we can extend him this summer. Otherwise, he'll likely have a ton of suitors come RFA in summer 2022.

This sentiment makes sense. If Collins gets moved for a player, I expect KH to be included as well.

Sam Vecenie wrote:Huerter’s elite-level shooting is terrific. But his talents overlap with Bogdan Bogdanovic, so Huerter is the best potential trade chip on this roster.
