So... which free agents are left in 2021 for the Mavs?

Post#1 » by leolozon » Sun Dec 20, 2020 5:25 pm

That's the problem with creating cap space for later : you end up with no one great left to sign and have to overpay for someone who's not really a difference maker. People get way too excited about cap space.

Who do you want them to sign with the cap space? Porter Jr.? Drummond? Oladipo?

I wish the team stopped putting too much stack in free agency and just build a roster when they have the chance. Maybe there was some sign and trades available this year if they were willing to take on long term salary.

Well, if there is a 5% chance that u can land someone like Giannis u have to create the capspace for it. Its not very often u have as big chance as we had this year to land that kind of player. He choose to renew in the end, good for him and Bucks, but we were a destination for him considering he had his people do calculations considering texas taxes and so on.'

Would say there is like Kawhi left of the UFA that is worth big money. A few of the RFA I wouldnt mind like Markkanen and someone I now forgot. We will see what they do, Mark got intelligent people in the organization so bet they have a backup plan ready or 3

Who are trade targets we can go for with THJ and Johnsons cap relief?

Yeah, Giannis was worth the restraint of keeping future cap open.
Landing Giannis was always a shot in the dark but he's a 2xMVP and would have been incredible with Luka. Seems the narrative with Giannis now is that he enjoys the position of being a franchise figurehead and teaming up with another star meant he would be "the other star" sort of like how KD was 2nd in fan appreciation to Steph in Golden State.

Given how the past few seasons have played out with guys moving like Westbrook, Kawhi, PG, and Harden wanting out I think 2021 can still throw surprises the Mav's way. I just hope Donnie has plans A thru Z planned out in anticipation for future craziness.

No good free agents left, unless you believe in Oladipo. Don’t be surprised if the Mavs just use the space to acquire extra picks or a worthwhile asset while absorbing a salary dump now.

I think Oubre will be good, but I also think we better pray our rookies will develop and THJ performs well and we extend the guy. We would do well to play WCS, Hinton, etc and see what we really have

We have tons of guys on expiring contracts and with Free agency hole it suddenly becomes make it or break it year

There is never a sure thing in building a team. Its always about probabilities. The cap play for Giannis was well worth it. Even if the odds of him coming to Dallas were always low, the upside was so enormous, it was worth doing. And I can't think of anything the Mavs really gave up to do it.

The 2021 free agent class has thinned out dramatically. Oladipo is the best at this time. But he has been rumored to want to go to Miami anyway, so he might be out. I think that leaves Otto Porter next. Maybe Oubre. There could be some unexpected and unlikely PO options like Kwahi or Griffin.

That leaves trading for a player who is better than THJ, but on a terrible contract. Tobias Harris comes to mind, but there are probably a few others. I think the Mavs should be focused on this during the season.

The most likely outcome to all of this is just resigning THJ. I think that has been the case all the way through. I had hoped they could do better and agree with their plan, but this is how it has worked out. Even then, its still OK. If Luka can play at an MVP level and KP has health and plays at an All-star level, this is a young, contending team for several years.

Realistically, only two guys come to mind. Forget Kawhi Leonard.

Victor Oladipo - outright signing if he wants out of Indiana
Spencer Dinwiddie - has a player option he can exercise if he wants a starting role here.

Or you can try pissing Pat RIley off by driving the price up for Duncan Robinson.

Another idea is we free up Sacramento some cash by sending them THJ + Josh Green + Tyler Bey for Harrison Barnes and Haliburton.

Works for me. Mavs were rumored to have been chasing Haliburton.

Mavs fans know this by now they don't attract free agents.

Now what they do well is swing for trades and with THjr and Johnson both on expiring deals they are in a good position for a deal (Chicago, Orlando, and Indy feel like trade candidates)

If they want to chase RFAs they could go that route too with someone like Collins or Issac.

They're in a good spot regardless of what they do.

Getting Barnes back would be the best move.

Issac just got 4yr 80 million
Fultz 3yr 50 million

When they start to fade Gordon will be moved.

I don't see any way that Sac trades Haliburton for what we would have to offer.
Haliburton could easily become the steal of the draft and has the credentials to become ROY.

And I doubt the Mavs would want Barnes back when it was clear he wasn't a good fit to begin with.

But if Sac would be crazy enough to offer that deal the Mavs would be completely crazy if they didn't take it in a heartbeat.

Maybe we see the Mavs looking to get active in trade scenarios by the TDL since trades could secure talent that is better than what we would grab in free agency.

KP & Collins fit well. Yeah, his defense sucks. But he could be the legitimate 2nd option DAL can rely on every night.

He's not the perfect target but I wonder if they'd be interested.

Wow that would be amazing to see. Have the assets overloading so you can pounce when a good fit becomes available.

Wouldn't mind signing Otto Porter and Oubre - and then use bird rights to resign THJ and Richardson. :D
