Detroit got suckered again by LAC. They were supposedly so concerned about Kennard's knees they needed four second round picks. Now mere weeks later they give Kennard and his knees $64M.

Love Luke but he's not worth 16 mil a year with his health issues and lack of defense..
LAC can afford to take the risk cause of their team make up and market, but man..
That trade still seems weird but I'm glad we moved on.

Solid move by the Clippers locking up what is a solid starter that is efficient and still getting better.... Very capable of being an 20 PPG scorer in this league especially when the defense is focusing on two other guys first.

Look for Kennard to have a career year for them this year and to keep getting better as time goes on.

Not sure how anyone can determine how Bey will develope or how healthy Luke will be. I guess speculating can be fun during slow times.

As of now Luke needs to show he can live up to that contract but I think he can

Wow is my reaction. While coughing up endless second round picks was a mistake, not paying Kennard that kind of money is spot on. He might be worth that kind of money if he were healthy and had some league average defense in him, but those knees will make the Clippers look duped. He'll have his moments, but that contract will hurt.

That's a good deal for Luke, $56m guaranteed. It may end up a bargain for the Clippers but I don't know if he'll hold up.

I'm glad we didn't make that bet.

Some fans will say he was worth that money, I won't. He won't stay healthy a whole year, he wasn't a great shooter, just good and he play's no D.

I'd rather give Lauri Markkanen that money if Chicago talks fail then give to Luke. At least Lauri is oozing potential as a legit 7 footer that's mobile and can shoot 3's.

Good on Luke to get paid. I'm guessing the Clips saw that their next door neighbors, the Lakers were handing out extensions and wanted to score their own.

Good deal right in line with the other sniper 3pt shooters. He may stay injuried but we'll look really dumb if this guy puts up 14/4/4

They paid him just over what he’s worth. I’m guessing we would have needed to offer closer to $20 million per. I don’t like giving up the 2nds, yes I realize they are just 2nds, but I feel we are better off having traded him.

Why do you think that? he would have been a restricted FA anyway what team would have given him 20mil? No other FA this off season thats comparable to Luke got that.

If you think we didn't know the market for Kennard (and likely Brown) when we shipped him off, you're kidding yourself. Some of these extensions are making Weaver's FA look a whole lot better.

Yikes! There is certainly a possibility that he lives up to or even exceeds that contact... but I wouldn't want to be the team to test that. From the Clipper side of things it's not too bad, but did they really need to go that high?

Considering the free agent pool for 2021 was already weak enough it's possible Luke gets that pay day in free agency anyway!

Clips bid against themselves though. Maybe their medical department is better than ours, maybe having PG13 locked up made it easier to spend on a 3rd (or 4th) option, maybe Luke has shown growth with them?

IDK about any of that but I'm thankful we shipped him out given his knees and the timeline of his contract. The fact we drafted Bey with that pick makes it even better.

When it comes to free agent spending, would you rather have Jerami Grant at $20M/year or Kennard at $16M/year? I'd probably lean toward Grant since he can play defense and doesn't have the injury history but both are big overpays. Grant should have gotten $16M and Kennard $12M.

I'd easily take Grant. Grant's ability to be a plus defender against most people in the league gives him a better floor as well as a higher ceiling. If Grant only marginally improves his shooting, he'll still be a value trade piece in two years because some contending team is going to want a player that can guard 3s to 5s on a regular basis (and handle switching on to most guards as well). And the best version of Grant is someone that could be the 2nd or 3rd option on a playoff contender.

Luke has a similar best case scenario, but he needs to keep being healthy, not lose a step, and become an average defender. And if he doesn't do any of these things, he'll turn into more of a 8th/9th man in the rotation, coming into to stand in the corner during non-crunch time minutes.
