Adam Silver: Giannis Antetokounmpo Extension 'Means CBA Working As We Designed It'
Adam Silver said it was a "huge deal" that the Milwaukee Bucks agreed to a supermax extension with Giannis Antetokounmpo.
Antetokounmpo has been the MVP in each of the past two seasons and could have become a free agent in 2021.
"In essence, it means the collective bargaining agreement is working as we designed it," Silver said.

bull.
If Giannis was the kind of player to value winning over loyalty he would have left. The money didn't get him to stay. Most players who take the big cash aren't actually worth it. The ones who are can't be kept unless they want to be.

If you think my comment has to do with anything other than pointing out that the supermax does not actually work then I'm sorry to burst your bubble.

Re: Adam Silver: Giannis Antetokounmpo Extension 'Means CBA Working As We Designed It'
the supermax was designed by chris paul to make sure he got paid in his upcoming free agency at the time
so yeah, it works... for that. it doesn't help small market teams keep stars, giannis simply isn't one of those dudes with wandering minds.

Not really, Adam. The move now is to get that supermax and demand a trade after. I mean.. I guess it saves smaller market teams from losing homegrown stars for nothing so at least we have that.
If Giannis grew up in LA or Florida and hung out out other stars in gyms all summer then I doubt he signs that contract to stay with the Bucks.

btw its pretty dumb that the NBPA allows the superstars to represent the interests of the NBA's middle class - if the union wants to make sure a rising tide lifts all boats, it should probably be a role player vet rather than an allstar leading negotiations.

The Supermax basically prevents a team from building a good team within a reasonable budget

Re: Adam Silver: Giannis Antetokounmpo Extension 'Means CBA Working As We Designed It'
Someone like Giannis could've gotten the max anywhere. That supermax is only convincing to the next tier of players who know they're not as good as the contract they're being offered and don't get the big brand deals, such as a Gobert. Giannis stayed because of other factors, not for the money like Silver is trying to argue

Just PR BS.
And it's mildly ironic following the Wall-Westbrook trade. Two of your supermax success stories demanded out and literally had to be traded for each other because their contracts were so monstrous that no one else could afford to match them.
I've said it for a while; the additional money that comes from a supermax should be moved off the cap to allow the original team to still somewhat build a team around their star.

Re: Adam Silver: Giannis Antetokounmpo Extension 'Means CBA Working As We Designed It'
Giannis already had more money than he could even dream for in his life by the time he made his first million.
Giannis didn't stay in Milwaukee just because Bucks could offer him some extra money. It's a lot deeper for him.
I can't blame Adam though. He is just another dude who cares only about numbers. He will never understand people like Giannis.

What about Kawhi, Harden, Anthony Davis, and soon James Harden leaving their teams? Is that there by CBA design?

I think for true parity, they need to have a hard cap and unlimited player salary cap. The other post on Real GM asking folks to create a team for $120m shows how hard it would be - Right now, it's a star players league. Only 5 teams can win a NBA championship any given year and it's usually one of the big market teams.

nope, small market gets to dip in the revenue pool due to poor mgmt, you give out super max you deal with it as such

Yup. If they're going to let people qualify for higher contracts because they made the All-Star team or All-NBA teams, then the All-Star team and all NBA teams shouldn't be based on position. Players that deserve to make it don't make it and players who don't deserve to make it make it. It's not a real representation of the best players in the league.
And they never should have considered defensive awards. Gobert, Green, Noah, Chandler etc. aren't supermax players.

Re: Adam Silver: Giannis Antetokounmpo Extension 'Means CBA Working As We Designed It'
EXACTLY. When you see an NBA Commissioner say that something has to change on terms of player options, then you will start the process of at least partially fixing the system. Adam Silver isnt strong enough to get that done. You sign a MAX extension if there is an option, BOTH player and team have the ability to opt out or no options at all.NUCKER101 wrote:Not really, Adam. Brad Stevens on fans who want the Celtics to tank: "I don’t think they’ll like me all that much then."
