Assumed Rotation for 2020-2021

Post#1 » by azuresou1 » Thu Dec 3, 2020 10:36 pm

I took a crack at what our presumed rotation is from a minutes/position perspective. I'm not going to try to project all the hundreds of unique lineup combinations we can run - I'll save that headache for LP.

This is my proposed minutes breakdown:

Looks about right.

I will go on record as pulling for Reddish to begin the season coming off the bench. It's where he had his most consistent success last year. Plus, he can ably handle the 6th man role as backup SG and backup SF.

Scoring shouldn't be an issue for the starting five, but they'll need defense, screening, rebounding and floor spacing (plus a low-usage player willing to utilize backdoor cuts when opposing defenses ignore them to trap Trae & Bogdan). Most of those are things De'Andre Hunter currently excels at and Cam Reddish needs to improve upon.

I like your lineup format.

That said, I don't know that Rondo is good for 15 minutes though, and I'd definitely want to squeeze Dunn in there - dude is a Doberman. More importantly, Okongwu needs to be seeing meaningful minutes - dude is REALLY good and is a 3PT shot away from being an All-Star caliber player.

I wouldn't put Cam over Hunter, but I think both will get similar minutes this year.

I'm interested to see the Hawks' small ball line up, like when Dennis and Teague were on the court at the same time and Sap was at center.

This has been my lineup (I'll let you guys divvy up the minutes):
PG: Young, Rondo/Dunn, Goodwin
SG: Bogdan, Huerter, Mays (2way)
SF: Hunter, Reddish, Snell
PF: Collins, Gallinari, Hill
C: Capela, Fernando, Okongwu (Injury - late start), Knight (2way)

1. With the quick start to the season, the compressed schedule - I think players minutes will top out at 30 mpg (at least to start the season)
2. I think Hunter gets the start. I personally want Cam to take control of the 2nd unit as 'the guy' - scorer, slasher, playmaking etc - he won't see the ball as much in the 1st unit.
3. I think Bruno will get the opportunity to start the season as Capela's backup (Gwu is still out with the foot, an updated will be given Dec 11th, the 1st game of the preseason. I think the Hawks bring him along slowly since he hasn't played in 11 months and has a playbook to learn, unless he comes out like Trae did and forces LP's hand)
4. Rondo - I think he will have the biggest variance in minutes, some games he'll play a lot, some games he will not. Sometimes he won't play at all, he'll be load managed, and he probably won't play in back to backs. Dunn has to get healthy to get real minutes at backup PG and SG.

(Said earlier)

Regarding the rest of the bench, I think that's just a matter of substituting guys in on a game-to-game basis based on the generally-recognized need to limit Gallo and Rondo's minutes in the regular season, and on who you happen to be playing on a given night that might allow you (a) more latitude to give your best guys less time and (b) the need maybe to have Dunn take away a team's primary perimeter weapon.

I don’t think you can keep Cam and Okongwu off the floor. Cam is just waiting to bust out and Okongwu is a man.

The 2020-21 Projected Starting Lineup For The Atlanta Hawks

Image

The Hawks’ front office promised Trae Young that they’d give him some help and it’s safe to state that they’ve delivered thus far, improving their defense with Onyeka Okongwu, Kris Dunn, and Rajon Rondo, and adding a couple of big scoring threats on Danilo Gallinari and Bogdan Bogdanovic.

With these impressive additions, Atlanta look poised to be a playoff team in the 2020-21 season. And even though it’ll be a while before they’re a legit contender, this offseason was definitely a huge step in the right direction.

Starting Small Forward: Cam Reddish

Most insiders believe that the Hawks will give Cam Reddish the nod as their starting small forward, at least to begin the season. However, whether he’ll end up logging enough minutes on the rotation with Danilo Gallinari coming off the bench is yet to be seen.

There’s no denying Cam Reddish’s freakish athleticism. Should he improve his abysmal efficiency as a scorer, he’d have the tools to be one of the most promising two-way players in the league. He’s not likely to have many touches in the offense, though.

Yup. Too talented to leave for the bench. Some of you.. {insert giggle} want him as a 6th man. The same person is trying to knock me out of fantasy football after not trying for a few weeks. I see you Eddie!!! It won’t work.

Capela's bad freethrow shooting will keep him on the bench in crunch time. Unfortunate!

Looks to me that D Hunter has cemented himself as a part of the starting five:

I love Bogi, but because of our crap defense we should run with Cam starting at 2G along with Hunter at SF. We need to defense to balance out Trae and Collins matador defense.

Can we agree this collection shouldn't be starting together after that catastrophic start?

Seems clear we need to keep this starting five in tact for a little while longer.
