Another idea is to sign Lamarcus Aldridge to a big contract for one year only. Then sign Aaron Gordon or Robert Covington in 2022.

Lukas max contract basically ends all free agency options. Realistically 2021 is the last chance to add another piece via free agency.

Right.. right.

I wonder if they are in the market for Lauri Markannen. Chicago seems to have given up on him. Didn't offer him an extension too.

Realistically, how far of an upgrade is Oladipo over THJ? and would the difference warrant the max.

The Mavs can still keep THJ with his bird rights. Sign him as an over the cap team. Oladipo starts with Richardson, THJ comes off the bench.

On offense:
SF- Richardson
SG- Oladipo
PG- Doncic

On defense:
SF- Doncic
SG- RIchardson
PG- Oladipo

We will first see how good is Oladipo this season first. And he will hit 30 this season as well

Oladipo says he's healthy now so no excuses. Tired of his antics as I'm sure many Indiana fans are.

Eric Woodyard: Pacers’ Victor Oladipo lists his goal for the season as to “get out of my own way.” He wants to “be myself.” Oladipo: “Just continue to stay aggressive and just go. I’m healthy now. I’m feeling better now than I did in the bubble and it’s time to go.”

Really dont think thats the type of guy you want on your team, especially when the #2 star in Dallas is going to have to be VERY willing to take a backseat for Luka on the court and in terms of exposure.

Its a reason I like Lowry for Dallas, on top of health, shorter deal and likely cheaper. He is just a quiet, role accepting winner.

Oladipo during his one elite season at age 25:

WS48 .155 / 4.1 OBPM / 1.0 DBPM / 5.0 VORP

Lowry at age 33

WS48 .171 / 2.2 OBPM / 1..0 DBPM / 2.8 VORP

Ok, so its not quite as good when looking at offense and VORP. But it shows Vic at his athletic best, something he wont achieve again w/ age and injury, is only slightly better (if that) than Lowry at the tail of his career. Take into account contract size and length, and attitude, and I think its clear who the right choice for Dallas would be.

I agree.
I don't want Victor Oladipo.
Indiana has talent to be better options than Victor Oladipo. He declined the extensions they offered because he wants the max.

The only cap space team that sticks out as a potential Ball suitor is the New York Knicks. There are other teams like the Bulls, Cavaliers, Mavericks, Heat, Thunder, and Raptors who have cap space but have point guard situations that could stop them from pursuing Ball. If his market is down this summer, he could sign his $14.4 million qualifying offer, which is high in historical standards. That would allow him to become an unrestricted free agent in 2022.

If the cost were the same, who would fit the Mavs better. Kyle Lowry or Victor Oladipo?

Oladipo is 6 years younger. In their prime, definitely Lowry, but he is very close to the end now. So definitely Oladipo.

Roster
Luka Brunson Burke Terry
Richardson THJ Green Hinton
DFS Johnson Iwundu Bey
KP Kleber Powell
WCS Boban

With KP back we will be tough enough to contend but if you want to focus on someone to dream of acquiring then I would look at trade scenarios because the free agent situation is weak now that Giannis and Gobert are off the market.

SG, SF and C/F is what we could use.

SG I like Richardson at the 2 so far.

SF is where we could improve but DFS is hitting his shots well enough when he gets the opportunity. Bey or Green could develop into decent players. Iwundu and Hinton are also looking good so if we find a diamond in the rough out of these 4 players we can just focus on getting a trade accomplished and develop our rookies each year while we keep that powder dry for a star in free agency. As it looks right now the SF position is our area of greatest need. If we do anything before the TDL it will probably be at the 3.

C If WCS breaks out we may have that role handled, I prefer KP play at PF so we need to find out if WCS is our guy or not. Powell is definitely not useful at the 5.

Another option is to use Luka at SF on defense and then add a PG that has 3 and D skill so you could play them at PG on D with Luka the PG on Offense. Luka would classify as a top 3 SF and if that was his position to play then a PG addition with off the ball scoring ability would be a fit

Patty Mills from the Spurs should come cheap in the summer.

Also, if you can get Mike Conley cheap, that would be a nice bargain. Plays defense and scores too. Getting Conley cheap would allow you to sign Richardson and THJ back too.

PG- Conley
SG- RIchardson
SF- Doncic

Patty seems loyal to San Antonio. He won't come cheap if you expect him to leave them.

Mills sucks and doesn’t fit the timeline at all. Mavs could make it pretty appealing for Kawhi to come back to Texas if things go poorly for the Clips again.

That or Oladipo are really the only 2021 options IMO

Kawhi might be the biggest pipedream ever for this team so I'd write him off immediately.
Not much interest in Oladipo.

I still think the best option for this team is to do what they do best and that is make trades.
We have nice trade pieces so I will be shocked if this team doesn't make a significant trade before the TDL.

They are just wasting time with "keeping powder dry" at this stage of the game.

I agree, I’d much rather have a guaranteed asset via a trade than trying our luck and potentially ending up with nothing in free agency. I don’t think the Mavs front office is working under that same assumption though... this entire decade has consisted of them going into summers looking for a big fish, I don’t see that changing just because Giannis isn’t around anymore

DeRozan or Aldridge look like Mark Cuban kind of moves. Players who were once superstars but are starting to get on the back half of their careers.

Return to Dallas Mavericks
