Ugh. Feel for the kid, this must be taking a toll on him mentally.
Brighter side, he almost certainly will come cheap in 2021. I would have let him walk for anything north of 10M, but if cheap we should gamble and try to lock him up. Maybe he could settle for a 3/20 type deal?

Something like 3/20 would be good for both. Get stronger. Work on his body. Best hopes for the kid.
Good to have Kanter, Giles, RoCo, Carmelo.

what a bummer for Zach and the team, oh well at least if we want to keep him he should be fairly cheap/reasonable

So conservative treatment provided no improvement to his condition, so they have decided that the surgery is the only viable option left.
Uhoh.
Sounds discouraging, especially considering the fact that we are talking about a young underweighted dude.

I feel for the kid, I really do, but I'm not confident in his long-term ability for his body to withstand the NBA game... I would honestly trade him this year or just cut him loose next before re-signing him if I'm being a totally cold-hearted GM.

He already had a surgery, and this was a "revision surgery".

Re: Zach Collins Out Indefinitely w/ Revision Surgery on Previous Injury
I know this is a huge setback, but at this point we are looking at two unrelated injuries and one big setback. Until he starts having recurring injuries on the same or related body part I am going with the 'just bad luck' take rather than labeling him another Oden.
My reservations for Zach are much more on the floor than relative to this bad spell of injuries. That being said, the type of player I envision him becoming was always worth something in the 7-10M per season range. If we can get him back on that lower end, I pull the trigger. Even the Zach we saw as a sophomore, assuming zero growth moving forward, is a guy worth 5-7M. So getting him at the high end of a zero growth arc (Which is unlikely, he should improve when he gets healthy) wouldnt be a bad move to me.
I hope we treat this like an opportunity rather than a sunk cost. 3/20 puts him around 7M AV and gives us much more hope to resign GTJ as well. I was assuming Zach got 12M+ offers and GTJ 15M+. Now the payday for Collins might be cut in half. Thats not a time to sell, thats a time to buy.

Who knew surgeries were like software? You never want to buy the x.0 release, always wait for the x.1 release with all the major bug fixes.

Was nothing learned from Meyers Leonard's extension? Just because Portland fans/front office value him (large number), doesn't mean other teams value him (large number). If anything, at this point Collins is a minimum/BAE player, salary filler, or a constant reminder the Blazers passed on Donovan Mitchell, Bam Abedayo, John Collins, Kyle Kuzma, Dillon Brooks (who the Blazers worked out!), OG Anuoby, Jarrett Allen, Terrance Ferguson, Justin Jackson, Harry Giles (salvaged!), etc., etc.
Been a week. Have I annoyed everyone reminding them how excited I was when the Blazers drafted John Collins, only to find out they drafted Zach Collins?
That said, I would have drafted Malik Monk, but then the Blazers have a history of doing well with undersized shooting/combo guards...

I suspected the mid January date was doubtful. This is worse than my negative suspicion.

The report a few weeks ago was no setbacks. I assume we now officially have a setback.

I get your point, but I'd remove Kyle Kuzma from your list. Frankly, I'd rather have injured Zach than overpaid Kuz. A lot of people thought Kuz was a steal his rookie year because he was taken 27th and put up some pretty meh numbers on a crappy team. Laker fans overhyped Kuzma to cover up the pain of taking Lonzo over Tatum. Kuzma has actually regressed since his rookie year, and he just signed a 3 year $40 million extension. He's a tweener who can't guard anyone (and doesn't try) and a bad 3-point shooter who misses gobs of wide open 3-pointers playing with LeBron and AD. He's not a terrible 27t pick, but he's not the steal people once hyped him to be.

It is a structural injury in a place where structural injuries can be a big problem. We need more information.

This is very different from the Meyers situation. Zach has a skillset that fits the modern NBA. He showed flashes of play at times his sophmore year that Meyers never did, especially in the playoffs where he posted a teriffic 2.2 DBPM over the run. He still has talent and potential and buying low on a cheap extension is the direction I would take. If he flames out, we get burnt but not too badly. If he balls out, we get a steal. If he falls in the middle, we have a 7M (Or so) salary ballast attached to a 7 footer who can defend and shoot the 3, something that may be appealing in future trades for a bigger contract as part of a package.
Blazers passed on Donovan Mitchell, Bam Abedayo, John Collins, Kyle Kuzma, Dillon Brooks (who the Blazers worked out!), OG Anuoby, Jarrett Allen, Terrance Ferguson, Justin Jackson, Harry Giles (salvaged!)
I would still take Zach over Kuzma, Brooks, Allen, Ferguson, Jackson and Giles. Honestly not even sure why the last 3 were mentioned lol.

imho and im not a dr. , but i think with his size and frame and the way the team wants/needs to use him, he'll continue to have ankle problems.
but i could be wayyy off so we'll see next year.
