Were you who asked me about Immortals about a week back? I finally got back to it today and put about another 5 hours in, and yeah, I'm still loving it. I think it's a great deal at $30, and I would have been totally fine still paying $40 for it.

It's certainly not AAA. It lacks a little polish, but I agree with most of the thoughts around the interwebs that the game is just...fun. I'm appreciating the comedy in the narrative as it's a bit of a breath of fresh air that it's a game that doesn't take itself too seriously, but the mechanics are also surprisingly good. And not overly complex. I don't feel like I have to grind for 10 hours to do something.

There's always something to do on the map, so if you want to do it you can. But you don't have to, and you can just go do the story if you want to. The world is beautiful. Obviously the graphics are not realistic, and the character models are subpar, but the style of graphics they use they excel at.

It is puzzle-heavy, so if it's a turnoff to you (it is not for me), then you should heed DB's advice and look elsewhere. The thing I find most tedious is the open world mechanic of going to a high point to scout the map. Once scouted, you (optionally) can use a binoculars-like mechanic to search the area for sparkly points or whatever you want to call it, then you hold R2 to reveal whatever icon it is (resource, puzzle, etc.). Honestly, it feels horrible. You have to mouse over something for it to sparkle, then you tinker to find the exact pixel you need to be on, then hold R2. But that said, you do it like 6 total times in the game - once for each area. It takes under 5 minutes and is not a big deal in the grand scheme of things.

Let me know if you have questions about the game. As of now - about 10 hours in - I think it's a no-brainer at $30 or $40 for an open world, go-anywhere, action-adventure game. Light-hearted story, no fetch quests, free reign to do as you please.

Appreciate it.

I’m really liking Slay the Spire and a little upset I slept on it for so long. It sort of scratches the Hearthstone itch while not being a complete money suck. I’ve only reached Act 3 two or three times using The Defect character, who so far seems to be hands down the best with his orb mechanic. Highly suggest it for the sale price right now of ~$12.

PS Plus games for January:
Shadow of the Tomb Raider - This one was always on my list but I never got to it, so I'll probably plan to finally play. Was supposed to be tomb exploration and puzzle-forward.
Greedfall - I know very little of this game. Anyone here play it?
Maneater (PS5 only) - Never heard of it.

In addition to Valhalla I picked up FF VII Remake and Miles Morales/Spider Man Remastered. Started playing Spidey to see how cool it looks (looks cool) but I'll probably switch over to one of the other two soon.

Fwiw the Miles Morales story is super short. Skip the side stuff and you would probably be done in no time. They even make the upgrade process faster than in the original.

I started playing Valhalla a couple of days ago and really like it. Doesn’t reinvent the wheel, but scratches the AC itch. Looks really nice, even on last gen.

This is random, but did anyone play Nier Automata a couple years ago? Thoughts?

I thought it was interesting, but to get the most out of it you need to play it (I think) seven times start to finish. I only did it once and bailed. I thought that it wasted too much of my time, and that's the biggest reason I bail on any game. I spent a lot of time wandering around not knowing what to do.

For ****'s sake.

I want an RPG to play after Immortals. I was thinking maybe I'd replay DQ11 or FF7R, but I don't want to re-buy DQ11 quite yet at full price (to have it on PS5), and I just played FF7R like 6 months ago.

It looks like there's a demo so I'll check it out, but will probably keep looking.

I'll say, though, from what I remember is they shift gameplay styles throughout the play throughs. Even on just the first trip through the game I was playing four different styles.

Like I said, it's an interesting game and pretty universally loved. If you pick it up cheap it's going to be worth it. I just have bad memories of it because I felt like there was 20% awesome gameplay and 80% where I thought it was forgettable.

Your yearly Star Citizen update:

https://www.extremetech.com/gaming/318751-star-citizen-developer-unveils-new-roadmap-cancels-squadron-42-beta

With all the Cyberpunk drama/fallout, it still doesn't hold a candle to the gauntlet of deceit and failed promises that the devs for SC have put the gaming community through. Reading through another article for some comments:

"I bought a $200 ship back in 2015, when gaming was the center of my life," they said. "Since then I have graduated university, progressed significantly in my career, bought a nice house in an established neighborhood, and have had three more kids."

Players have spent millions of dollars to buy them. In fact, Cloud Imperium Games once offered the Legatus Pack which bundles 100 starships for $27,000.

$27,000 to buy starships in a game that's not even in beta yet. Just for comparison, you can buy a brand new Toyota Corolla for less than that.....at market price.

10 years and counting without even a tentative beta date, let alone a release date. Absolutely insane.

I don't wanna be a scumbag but it's soooo tempting considering how much they've screwed me over the years.
F*** Marc Davis, f*** Tim Donaghy and f*** David Stern as a staff, record label and as a mothaf**kin crew......and if you wanna be down with Stern then F*** YOU TOO!!! Stu Jackson f*** you too.....all you mothaf**kas F*** YOU TOO!!!!

I was just coming here to say that my PS5 from Amazon came today and it was the $750 SpiderMan edition, not the $400 Digital version I ordered/payed for. Wife said keep it but I'm struggling.

Ended up getting a 34" LG ultrawide and so far I'm loving it. Won third in fantasy football and took home $500, then sold my Dell for a few hundred so the sticker shock price didn't hurt as much. Works out well since I watch Hulu/Sports on the top monitor and game on the bottom. I've tried our 10-15 games and most all of them let you adjust picture to fit well. Excited to keep using it. Either way I think the battlestation is done for a while.[

Love your setup! Is the LG monitor 4k?. I was looking at some of their ultra gear monitors. I'm thinking of upgrading my rig to handle 4k gaming (1440p gang currently). Just need to find a 3080 lol.

Edit: Also noticed you play Overwatch. I used to main Orisa a lot. Was always a better tank than anything else lol.

The top is a Samsung CHG70 32" 1440p 144hz monitor, bottom is a LG 38GL950G-B 34" 1440p 144hz monitor. I'm considering returning it for the LG 38" 3840 x 1600 but not sure if I should make that big of a jump. I have a 3080 myself, part of my new build that I probably went overboard on but I deserve it after 2020.

I play Overwatch a decent amount, I used to play a lot more. Probably have a few hundred hours logged. I main tank and Moira. Used to be strictly DPS but I really enjoy shorter queue times that comes with tank/heal. If you ever wanna play let me know (jschligs#1166).

I've also been playing Cyberpunk 2077 and CoD CW BO and Warzone.

Ok but seriously **** Amazon.

ETA: But I understand your dilemma. I cancelled one of my PS5 orders because I didn't want to be a **** scalper. But that was so I wouldn't make a buck off of another consumer who wanted a console for the holidays, not so that I would Amazon help save some cash :)

I feel so vindicated by that game. I remember people thought it was going to be the be the game to end all games. I just didn’t see it, never did I think it’d ever live up to its hype. Glad I never bought in, pretty sure I have a friend who invested a bunch of money in ships for nothing.

Liking Valhalla. It's definitely nothing I haven't played for years in the series, but there's comfort in that.

I think I'm going to get Jedi Fallen Order as my next game. I tried finding an RPG to (re)play next and nothing was catching me. I think I'm in a bit of a rut. So, why not.
