Possible Lowry Trade Destinations

Post#1 » by JD143726 » Fri Jan 1, 2021 6:44 pm

Assuming that our tough schedule gets the better of us and we look towards trading Lowry, what are the realistic destinations?

- Must have matching contacts, trade exceptions or space
- Must have a first round pick to trade and possibly seconds
- Must have a need for his position
- Must be making either a title push or looking to make big noise in the playoffs

Here’s what I came up with that fit the criteria:

- Utah
- Dallas
- Philly
- Brooklyn
- Portland
- Indiana

Anyone else?

I don’t think Brooklyn/Portland/Indiana would be interested. Mike Conley is playing pretty well for Utah so I doubt they would be interested.

I would add Miami, Denver, and the LA Clippers to that list.

Likely would need a third team to make it work...

Philly would probably be the best partner. Lowry gets to go home and has a chance to win.

Trade him for Danny Green/Mike Scott/Matisse Thybulle and a 1st round pick.

If we trade Lowry it’ll be because we’re out of the playoffs and Lowry wants to chase. Ie it’ll be more a favour to him than a benefit to the team, so I wouldn’t expect much if anything back...

Sixers makes a lot of sense if they strike out on Harden, I think Lowry has always secretly wanted to go play for his home team

as long as Lowry isn't going to the Clippers I'll be happy.

I could see the Spurs trying to make some offers to team him up with Derozan for a season. Worst case scenario for them they both walk and they free up cap space.

Now, I don't know what the Spurs could offer the raptors in return to justify the trade and match salaries. Maybe picks or third team?

I believe they were eyeing him a few seasons ago as well

Lowry to San Antonio for Lonnie Walker (or Keldon Johnson), Jake Puddle and Patty Mills' expiring contract.

Murray/Lowry/Derozan/Gay/Aldridge is a decent playoff team.

You know it does not work salary wise?
I don't think Philly is our best partner, because they may not have someone who can match the salary and make it work. We might as well waive Lowry instead of getting those players who are also chasing for rings at the age of their career.

Sixers make the most sense in terms of fit and expiring contracts/assets. Danny Green, Tony Bradley, Milton and they have their own picks.

Add Bradley and it works.

That said, if we're trading Lowry, we're into a bit of a rebuild. I'd rather take on Tobias Harris's contract and get some assets - Maybe something like: Harris, Thybulle, and 2 FRPs and a second round pick (so we get an additional pick to take on the contract). Maybe with a bigger role, we could turn Harris back into a positive asset.

Golden State. Steph and Lowry backcourt gets them into the second round at minimum.

Warriors is an interesting spot. If we decide to give up on cap space next year. Lowry for Wiggins + Warriors pick + Wolves pick. With this trade we would probably finish int he lottery too. Potentially 3 lottery picks.

The beauty of Lowry's game is that he can play so many types of roles at a high level, he could easily have a place on any contender. It would be foolish for any team to not at least kick the tires If he were to become available.

For this reason, Atlanta would be one of my sleeper fits. If you believe 1) he can play some minutes beside Trae and 2) he's a significant upgrade on even Playoff Rondo, that could be the type of pickup that could propel the Hawks to true contender status.

All that for an expiring Lowry? I doubt you get both picks for Lowry...even if the ask is to take on Wiggins' massive contract. You might be lucky to get even the lesser of the 2 picks.

We cant get more value for Lowry than what Warriors got for Russell? Warriors can probably convince themselves that they can make playoffs with Lowry and they can save 100m next 2 years with Wiggins off the books.

Someone should start some sort of “trade thread” for ideas like these !!

Russell is in his 20s, is signed long term and is the Timberwolves' desperate push to keep KAT happy. Kyle obviously has a better resume than Russell but he is also an expiring contract and in his mid 30s.

You might get a first round pick but don't count on it being a top 10 pick.

I don’t think the Warriors are desperate to win this season. This will be another transition year. That decision was made when Klay went down for the entire season....and be very clear...a Lowry trade for any team would be a win-now move. No one is picking him up to build around him for the future.

If the Warriors are really willing to include both picks to dump Wiggins for Kyle's expiring, sure. I just can't see them doing that though. They're probably closer to working with Steph to find him a new team where they get even more picks to work with coming back.
