Sure, Nesmith had a few blunders but I though he looked OK defensively. When plays break down he thinks on the court doesnt just blindly do what he was assigned. His defensive awareness is 10x better than R.Williams his rookie year, which doesnt say a lot but still...He is very active, has the length and IMO will be a solid defender in his career.

On offense he will start knocking shots down sooner rather than later. It would be great if he played more minutes with the starters and if we ran a play or two for him coming off screens...

so much this. But overstated or not, he needs to PLAY/EXPERIECE to learn. Plus when you play. makes mistakes, you can look at film the next day and learn what to do different/better.

If you are not playing, what film do you look at??

Javonte isn't a good defender, people just assume that because he's athletic and lengthy.

Nesmith has fine defensive awareness, I'd say. Just a matter of cleaning up his positioning habits, and coaching a few bad habits out of him, specifically cheating with his length for steals or blocks. He's always been a long 2-guard so he has a tendency to reach in.

I think RealGM fans, regardless of fanbase, significantly overestimate the extent to which coaches are holding back their poor future All-Stars by not playing them. Nesmith should be fine. Right now, opposing teams want to attack him, and if his fundamentals aren't there, he's gonna be vulnerable. Best nip that in the bud and build good habits and prove he can do it in practice early. At least the kid doesn't need to learn how to shoot the damn ball like some other recent draftees. I'm sure he'll be fine.

The coaches watch them play all day long. Its only us fans who have the games to go off of.

This is a miss by Danny. Your 14th pick has to play.

My issue is I don’t really see a difference between Nesmith, Bey, Vassell, or Bane’s shooting. Did people buy too much into Nesmith shooting 50% from three as a sophomore in his shortened season? I mean he shot 33% as a freshman so I think the reality is somewhere in between. It’s not like he’s super young either. I just don’t think 14 is where you grab someone who only gives you one thing. The other shooters are much more developed defensively and could have stepped right in, which seemed like what Ainge needed when he didn’t address the bench.

Or Danny could just stop missing on picks outside the top of the lottery. Don’t draft another project when you’re bench needs help so badly.

playing Edwards and Grant Williams over Nesmith at this point is a fireable offense

At this point my optimism is real low. Ainge’s draft record right now is essentially being saved by the Nets trade and the fact he got Tatum and Brown from it. His late lotto/first round picks have been absolute garbage. Feels like every team seems to hit on on one of these but us.

Can't we even use Nesmith the way the Pistons use a Svi Mykhailiuk or the Pacers use a Doug McDermott? This kid will never sniff 10 mpg for his entire tenure in Boston because the coaching staff has absolutely no idea on how to utilize a 3 pt specialist.

Ironically his last hit was Rozier, now he is playing well and kemba is looking like damaged goods.

That is his biggest strength defensively. You can ask him to cover a shooter one on one and he is generally up to the challenge.

But in terms of team defense, he gets lost in rotation all the time. Not a good team defender.

I think it was the poster joshyjess who posited this premise as a question the other day and I was quick to cite the circumstances saying that it was unfair to judge him because of no Summer League and no training camp. I don't think it was a miss by Danny but I do understand your point. If you're not gonna acquire more guys that can reliably help us under these circumstances then you need to draft guys that can come in and contribute; or else what's the point? In this case, I'll argue that I like Nesmith's long term potential so where I'll choose get at Danny is for not providing significant upgrades at the back end of the roster. He could've let go Semi and Javonte and upgraded those spots with veteran minimum guys that knew how to play. He chose not to. So if I'm gonna get at Danny, it's not gonna be for the pick.
and that's "MR. Irrelevant" to you!!

At worst he looked like Faried with better defense.

Already getting the James Young treatment does not bode well. Meanwhile Saddiq Bey and Maxey are producing for their teams.

Is this a Brad Stevens problem or is our scouting staff really bad at drafting late lottery/lower picks?

Maxey has not produced anything. Bey had done zip until he had a good game yesterday. Where do people come up with these takes. It's ~50 minutes into these players' careers and they got drafted a few weeks ago, had no summer league, very limited preseason.

If you want to be mad, be mad that Cole Anthony looks so good even without his shot dropping yet. He's the lead guard when he's in the game and he looks tremendous as expected. But whatever, it's literally a few games.

So far these guys are getting minutes while Nesmith is being not but a spectator. Seems to me he's getting the treatment James Young got because of his defensive liabilities. If defense is so important for this team then they should've picked Bey or Maxey who look much better defensively. Especially Bey impressed me with his 3 and D game.

Maxey is scoring quick points for his team in short spurts. Dont know if you've seen any Sixers game but he's good for atleast a few buckets in limited minutes. His floater is already hard to guard for opponents. I admit he was my binky in this draft and it pains me to see him play for a rival and already showing his potential.
