Christian Wood...Did the Bucks make a mistake?
Much discussion lately over whether or not the Bucks screwed up by releasing Wood.
Make your case, one way or the other.

How is this a question? A year and a half later he looks like could make an all star game. You can understand why they did it and still acknowledge the error.

A crazy mistake but dampened somewhat by the fact that four other teams made it, including two who had him between us and Houston. Unprecedented.

Yes.
And the roster mistakes continue to outnumber the non-mistakes in the Horst era.

Obviously it was a mistake. And it was an even bigger mistake that it was because of an old Pau Gasol and Tim Frazier.

I didn't think you could justify it at the time to be honest.

I think the two games we got from Pau Gasol were invaluable to our chemistry and just teaching our young guys how to play the game and win.

Re: Christian Wood...Did the Bucks make a mistake?
I just don’t see any scenario in which Wood is playing 30 minutes a game in Milwaukee. He’d basically be in the Bobby Portis role in which Portis is getting $10M less a year for the same per 36 production.

I just want to know how so many people made mistakes on him. The guy has been unbelievably productive every where he went.
FFS- he AVERAGED 29.3p/14.1r/2.2b in the G-league as a 23 year old on 56% shooting. I would say that is a league that is pretty good. I don't know how that doesn't translate as at least an average backup big. That has value in this league on a minimum contract.
The fact he got playing time and now is having the impact he has really makes you question the talent evaluators in the organization.

We could've used him as a trade asset. God knows we need those. And he could very easily get 25+ minutes on this team.

Unless Gianni switched to C position full-time.

Re: Christian Wood...Did the Bucks make a mistake?
To me, this is like passing on a guy some guys liked at 12 in a draft that went 19. Yeah, there were people here who ended up being right, but there is a reason other teams passed on him.
Let's see how the year progresses, he is on a 2-2 team with 2 wins against the Kings. Hopefully, by March we totally forget about what is going on with Wood.

17p/12r/1.3b does not equal 23.1p/10.6r/2.2b. Especially when one is doing it against starters in starter minutes while the lesser stat guy is doing it against backups in backup minutes.

The list of G League players with impressive seasons is littered with no name NBA players.

I don't think it ever had to do with talent. I assume he is out of place a lot or doesn't pick up schemes. If you are a team looking for a 8th man, do you want a guy that doesn't play the scheme and just floats to places he wants? I think he has matured and grown as a player, but there are plenty of guys who flamed out despite obvious talent.

Re: Christian Wood...Did the Bucks make a mistake?
This is more complicated than when the Pistons and Bulls cut Spencer Dinwiddie, but also more impactful.
The painful part is that it was the Bucks who developed him. Suki turned him from a stickman to a functionally strong player. The coaching staff developed the off the dribble game that makes him so dangerous.
Hopefully this move leads to a reduction of the power Buds holds over personnel. Horst is the 3rd most powerful member of the organization, behind ownership and Buds. That's a problem.
