Bertans being one dimensional isn't anything new, the FO made the signing knowing full well what he brings to the table (and what he doesn't).
His skillset is useful and he is fairly being compensated for having an elite skill that's in high demand around the league.
The question for the Wizards however shouldn't have been whether Bertans is worth it, it should have been whether it is worth it to them given their roster and needs and whether committing that kind of salary is really the best allocation of resources.
Without the Bertans money on the books, Washington could have made a full MLE offer to Crowder who would have been just what the doctor ordered for this team.
Boston was interested in Bertans, if the deadline rumors from the previous season are to be believed it stands to reason that the Celtics may have been willing to part with their 26th or 30th selection which would have given Washington a chance to add Tillman.
Bertans was a luxury signing, not one borne out of necessity and the Wizards FO is to blame for misjudging the talent on its roster and how the players complement each other
The Wizards lack of identity is the biggest issue and that solely rests on Sheppards shoulders.
When you have generational scorer like Beal the goal shouldn't be to add more scoring, it should be to add some ride or dies that can get down and dirty.
