This is the lineup that closed the game for CLT in the ATL win and had some nice moments last night win over NOP as well.

Just as importantly, it features PJ Washington at the 5 — where the team's performed much better. The team is getting to their spots on offense and pushing the pace.

PJW playing with a C (-17.3)
PPP: 0.91
Allowed PPP: 1.08

PJW playing as the C (+9.8)
PPP: 1.17
Allowed PPP: 1.07

That's wild considering that exact lineup with Biz subbed in for Miles Bridges is close to the bottom

Our zone defense is nuts. Who is in charge of this?

Did not realize that we own Q4 when we are winning after Q3. Reminds me of how we used to constantly fail to close out close games

https://theboonedocs.substack.com/p/one-third-of-the-way-into-their-season

Entering the fourth quarter with a lead is a huge thing for them. Whenever that happens, they haven’t lost. Factoring in their latest victory, the Hornets are 10-0 when they are up heading into the fourth.

Finishing games has actually been one of their strengths and it’s stepped into the forefront lately, fueling their confidence.

“When it’s close, when we’re tight in the fourth quarter, we’re coming out on the right side of this stuff,” Borrego said. “For whatever reason we execute in the fourth, it’s tight, we get good shots, we execute defensively. We’ve been one of the better closing teams in this league. That’s not easy to do. I’m not going to sugarcoat it. That’s a heck of a job by a young team, for us to be able to close these games in fourth quarters.

“I guess we’ve got to get to the fourth quarter with the lead. That’s the thing right there. Get off to good starts. Fourth quarter, we are a good closing team.”

I still have PTSD from our constant 3rd qtr meltdowns we lived through for years and years.

Saw PNR mentioned in another thread, so out of curiosity I looked up PNR stats on the NBA stats site.

Apparently we are a bottom 5 team in PNR offense when the handler keeps the ball, both in frequency (was surprised to learn this) and in PPP. We are somewhere in the middle of the pack in PNR offense when we dish to the roller in terms of frequency, but we're bottom 5 in PPP. So in sum, offensively we both don't rely heavily on PNR in our sets and we're not very efficient running PNR actions for either the handler or the roller.

What was most interesting is the defensive stats. We have the best PNR defense when the handler keeps the ball and we are top 5 when the roll man is hit in terms of limiting PPP. When the handler keeps the ball, opponents score only 37% of the time, by far the best in the league. Opponents also attack our PNR defense with the handler by far the fewest of any team in the league, so we successfully shut down the action.

This may be all "duh" info, because I think we all know we overhelp in the PNR which is a major factor in our terrible 3PT defense, particularly all the corner 3s we give up. Just thought it was interesting enough to merit posting.

I know pace has slowed. Any other explanations for this jump?

hate to be the debbie downer here but it's mainly the teams we've played against. Houston and Phoenix got plenty of open 3s, they just shot like garbage. San Antonio and Miami also shot below their averages. Phoenix, in particular, went 8-40. We would've been beat handily if they had just an ordinary bad night from 3.

So the counter argument is "but they're good shooting teams so it wasn't our defense that was improved"? Not really following there.

I thought teams shooting below their average was an argument in favor of better defense, not against it.

Jae Crowder probably helped this stat a lot. I swear it seemed like he missed 15 3s the other day.

In all seriousness the defense does look better. Players look more engaged. And for all of his shortcomings Miles is always 110% locked in on that end. He takes it personal.
