Post game thoughts. Spurs.

Post#1 » by coolcono » Sun Jan 10, 2021 3:45 am

I was only able to see some of the 3rd onwards.
This team is much better with Towns. He is, bar none, the best player on the roster. He played great defense as well.
Reid looked pretty good off the bench.
Once again need to praise the rebounding by Culver.

Meh-Beasely/Russell. Both made great shots towards the end of the game, but missed some as well. It seemed like there better shot opportunities. I held my breath whenever they took a shot.

Rubio- Shoot a couple of terrible shots. He should have setup the offense better on a couple of possessions.

Just fire Ryan Saunders tonight. Enough of this 3rd year rookie head coach clueless every night.

DeRozan is killing us all night, how about put Jarred Vanderbilt on him. A 6’9 forward who can bother him with his length and size.

Last play of the game in OT, we have two timeouts! Use one and draw up a play!

How many more excuses will this guy get game after game, loss after loss.

Ryan Saunders coaching record is now 38-77.

Unfortunately, we got super Beasley tonight and still lost. The man hit 7 three's that's crazy and not normal. Sucks others couldn't step up.

Also had some really good team comparison stats tonight but got murdered in two areas.

We had 50% vs 43% shooting
15 threes
More points in the paint
More bench points
7 more second chance points

But it was a blowout in free throws (24-29 to our 15-30) and pts off of turnovers (24 to 7).

Sloppy.

There are things that are becoming more clear with every passing game.
1. Super small ball is not a winning formula for this roster.
2. Russell and Rubio together doesn't work.
3. Culver is not a PF.
4. Layman may not have a role on this team.
5. Reid is a solid backup center.
6. Edwards needs to give up on jump shots unless he is wide open. Just drive to the basket every time.
7. Vanderbilt needs more minutes.

Should we have drafted ball?

We were 11/17 from the line, 15/30 from three.

We played zone and got burned 3 times in OT from an open corner shot, it was so gut wrenching.

I love that Ant, KAT, Beas & DLO ALL hit a clutch 3 late and we still lost in OT, it was devastating.

Ant had a really good second half & good defensive plays on Derozan in OT, he had the right idea to try to get a 3, but he should've dunked it and played the foul game on the Spurs...it is what it is

Jarred Vanderbilt would have been absolutely brutalized by Demar Derozan, dude isn’t laterally quick enough for that assignment.

Missed out best defender this game, but played against a well coached team with more experienced players and without KAT 100%. Could have won with better decisions down the stretch or less offensive mistakes, but if they play like this they won't be very bad.

If they are hell bent on winning need to trade Ricky, juan, layman, nowell, seconds for a decent PF. Who though?

Wouldn’t be worst than DLo, Beasley, Culver, Rubio trying time guard him all night.

Ryan Saunders sucks plain and simple.

You are down 3, you have two timeout, you have to call one and draw a good play for the last play of the game. If you are down 2, then let it play out but he froze and choked like choke artist rookie coach that he is.

Even Jim Pete called Ryan out and said he blew it.

Anthony Edwards had a wide open dunk that would have put Minnesota down one with multiple seconds left. Just a bad take.

Regardless, D'Angelo Russells monopolizing of possessions hurts Minnesota. I have zero idea why Ryan would isolate him at the top, when Minnesota is at their best when Towns is the primary play maker. It is maddening to me that Minnesota does not fully utilize Karl-Anthony Towns.

I guess Jim Pete, a former NBA player, former WNBA associate coach, said the exact same thing that Ryan should of called a timeout.

Jim Pete, you don’t know basketball!

Damn, if he dunks it there's close to 7.5 seconds left

Ant expected kat to be open for the three but Kat was slow getting back but definitely take the dunk then time out would be better,Ant will learn.

I mean, Jim Peterson is right if the argument is that you can't trust your player to take a wide open layup/dunk. Just look at the gif that PharmD posted, there was over seven seconds after the layup. Anthony Edwards choked massively under pressure; it happens, it is part of the learning process.

I don't think Ryan should've called timeout.

ANT should've dunked.

Then we shouldve played the foul game with timeouts. Very simple. I am very interested to hear if he was told to not dunk.. if so that is on coaching.. if he didn't dunk and thought let's go the three.. then that's on him and then coaching needs to iron that out.
