Nvidia and AMD’s high-end graphics cards were expensive in 2020 (if you could find them), but their prices are only going up. And you can thank the government for that.

As of December 31, 2020, GPUs and motherboards are now included in tariffs the Trump administration placed on Chinese imports. These PC components were previously exempt from said tariffs, but those exceptions expired at the end of 2020 and no extensions were applied. That means prices have been rising by as much as 25 percent for high-end GPUs—including Nvidia’s new RTX 3090, 3080, 3070, and 3060 Ti, and AMD’s RX 6800 and RX 6800 XT.

Nvidia and AMD’s latest GPUs were nearly impossible to buy in 2020 to begin with, as COVID-19 affected manufacturing and supply chains, leading to more limited products even available for purchase. And retailers would typically sell out in mere seconds every time they restocked, thanks to scalpers and cryptocurrency miners using bots to buy up as many graphics cards as possible.

The purchasing experience got bad enough that many retailers implemented anti-bot tactics like waitlists, more aggressive human verification systems, and strict limits on how many GPUs customers can purchase. However, these tariffs are only going to make the process more difficult—and expensive—if you’re lucky enough to score a card.

The tariffs don’t just affect GPUs, either; SSDs, CPUs, power supply units, and other PC components could all see price hikes between seven and 25 percent, depending on their price. As Tom’s Hardware notes, the increase on prices for these probably won’t be as severe as the increase to GPUs, but if you’re buying or building a new PC, or upgrading several pieces of an existing rig, you’ll definitely notice a difference.

I was considering a high end setup but this is a bummer to read.

For a little bit there, I was like "did I do the right thing buying a new computer when the old one was still working?" But after that news came out, feeling pretty good that I bought my new machine when I did. I think they were saying they expect the popular graphics cards to get like $150-200 more expensive easily.

Late to the game on VR, but the Valve Index is pretty freaking great. Half Life Alyx has numerous "holy ****" moments to the point I tried to throw a grenade and knocked over my PC IRL. All ok, thank goodness, but it is pretty good stuff.

That was the main reason I was considering getting a kick ass PC, the VR. Seems dope.

On a different note, AC: Valhalla is just so **** long. I bailed on Odyssey after I'd dumped 40 or 50 hours into it and I felt like I was still 50 hours away if not more from seeing the credits.

I've done some main story story stuff, unlocked most of the map, hunted for a lot of great gear, then took a break and played other stuff. Back to Valhalla and I'm looking at how I'm only level 60ish, and I need to be around 200 before I can even get serious about hunting down the Order of Ancients. Obviously have a ton of story left. I can't even think about the best gear until I'm around 250, and I've already probably put 30 hours in.

I put AC Valhalla down about 40 hours in and around power level 140. Haven't gone back yet. I've changed weapons & gear maybe twice throughout the entire time, there's really no incentive to change and there's not substantial variety in weapons & gear.

I actually disagree, at least when it comes to weapons. I think there's a nice variance there that determines play style. There's definitely techniques you can learn that work specifically well against certain enemies. I will say though that I've gotten fond of a Flawless Dagger. I'm very stabby.

Interesting. I've used a two handed axe for 90% of the game and have no issue with any enemy type.

Yeah, just not my jam. Played Origins for a bit, switched to Tomb Raider (most recent one), finished it, and couldn't go back to AC Origins. Maybe 25 year old me wanted to grind that, but 49 year old me was done with that.

I haven't had any real problem if I'm sticking to the story or where I'm not under leveled. But that's boring and I've been trying to steal gear in camps where I'm under by over 100-150 levels and take on those Order dudes who are hilariously more tanky than I am. Some weapon techniques help more than others.

Oh, gotcha. I've basically been equal/over level to all quests & enemies.

This was everyone's primary complaint past the bugs it launched with. And it really hit me because, as much as I loved Odyssey (I really did, Greek mythology is dope), it just didn't end. So this really turned me off when I heard how **** long it is.

It's also one of the reasons I have loved Immortals. There's no bull.

Far Cry 5 was probably the last open world game that actually made me want to explore the entire map. I think the problem with that genre right now is the massive amount of unnecessary filler they put in to pass off as "content". Might check out Immortals seeing as lots of people are saying it cuts down on the BS while still being a beautiful environment to explore. Between No Man's Sky, Just Cause, and playing some retro games, I've been in much more of a "chill" gamer mode as of late.

You play Subnautica? Probably one of the best in the survival game genre. Besides that The Forest and to a lesser extent Stranded Deep.

Can anyone recommend a new modem & router? Currently using an older Nighthawk router and an equally old NetGear 16x4 cable modem. Don't have cable so I stream everything and there are countless devices attached to the network all the time. I've noticed our speeds have really fluctuated lately and realized it's been several years since we upgraded. I forgot what internet package I have through spectrum but I'm pretty sure it's their fastest.

I've seen/heard of games like Subnautica, Green Hell, etc. The Forest looks amazing but I'll admit I'm not too into the survival/horror genre.

I bought a new phone - Samsung Note 20 Ultra. I got a really good deal on it, so I decided to make the jump. It's my first foray into the Note series, as I came from an S8/S6/S3. I think I'm enjoying the S pen and the processing is extremely snappy, but I'm also terrified of dropping this phone because the camera bump on the back that prevents me from laying it down flat. I can't wait for my case to come in.

Just recommendations based on your No Man's Sky playthrough. They all have endgames. Subnautica is probably the easiest to follow from point A to point B since there are PDAs that guide you what to do. You can also just build for as long as you want.

The iPhone is the last Apple device I have/use regularly at this point, and I think my family and friends would disown me if I left.

I've never had an iPhone, largely because I don't use any Apple products. Even as most of my friends have iPhones, I feel like the only thing I've missed is the lack of iMessaging. Thankfully, WhatsApp has filled that void for the most part.
