Circumstances matter. Luka started the season without KP. Now the Mavs are missing 3 starters due to COVID protocols. If the Mavs manage to stay in the top 3-4 it could be enough for the MVP award.
LeBron is the best player in the world until proven otherwise in the playoffs but we all know that the MVP award is not always given to the best player.
How about these circumstances:
Lebron just beat the bucks and clips the final week of the season and was a beast
Giannis was hurt and was about to miss weeks with his ankle injury
Lebron was about to win the mvp but covid circumstances robbed him and then the bubble games didn't matter so there was no chance to even win it
Can't have a double standard now with covid, the results are the results
MVPs are always a top 2 seed besides Russ who had the historic triple double season since Oscar and had the narrative story since KD left
Not really sure how that relates to the current situation and the way voters will act
I already mentioned that LeBron is the best player until proven otherwise but based on the vote results in the last few years that´s not always enough. LeBron will probably have the best player on the best team in the west narrative and usually that is enough but he also has one of if not the best supporting casts and easily the best 2nd option.
Giannis numbers are just as good as they used to be and he will probably be the best player in the east again. Making his case just as good as LBJ. I expect voters to give it to LBJ in that case because Giannis won the last two.
Lukas case is that he has to do more than both. He is carrying a bigger load than both and if the Mavs finish top 3-4 in the west that might be enough.
You basically answered everything for me
Award also usually goes to the best player on one of the top few teams
Is AD better than Harden? He isn't a better #1, that is clear, but maybe he is a better #2 b/c of off-ball scoring and defense. Arguable, but an actual question
But it won't matter honestly, many great players have one with the best #2s next to them.
MJ, Magic, Bird
Lebron in 2012 won an mvp when Wade was still a top 10 guy
Man Lebron has a chance this year to be a 5x mvp, 5x champion, a 4-5xfmvp and possibly beating another all time great superteam if they beat Bkn
I can see the Bucks or Sixers beating the Nets though tbh, will be close.
