The future of basketball - 10 minute games
The new generation doesn't like to do stuff that takes long time. With YouTube and Instagram's stories, people now like to watch short duration videos. With Facebook and Twitter, people now like to read short statuses instead of long articles. This phenomenon can be seen in all areas of our lives. Shorter is better.
The duration of basketball games fits an older era. Today many people just watch the highlights in YouTube.
My claim is this: if no other sports existed and basketball was invented today, the duration of the game would have been much shorter - maybe something like 10 minutes, and no more than 20 minutes.
Do you agree with this claim? And if so, do you think it will still happen (given current state of basketball today)? Could it maybe co-exist side by side with the current game?

NBA is now a twitter league. It's hard to watch.

What do you mean? This is actually an interesting idea. 10 minutes if obviously a stretch but I can see four 6 minute quarters if basketball would be a new sport. Or two quarters 15 min.

TBF, nothing in the NBA can capture eyeballs like "Brits vs Colonies" or "India vs Pakistan".

How about a best of 15 series of one minute games? That way you maximize the drama of each game. The kids will love it!
Seriously though, by shortening games even nine minutes the NBA is losing 20% of its broadcast revenue and in-game sales revenue. That's billions lost annually.
If anything, the NBA should be adding minutes onto a game to try to recoup what they've lost last year and will be losing this year.

No, because sports are for entertainment. This is similar to watching a movie, playing a game, or pretty much doing anything you enjoy.
If you enjoy something, you don’t want it to finish quickly. Instead, you want it to last longer.
Then you also have to think about the money aspect. Nobody is going to pay !#*% ton of money to go watch a 10 minute game. Nobody is going to subscribe to paid viewing services to watch a 10 minute game if they can just watch a slightly shorter highlight of it on YouTube. Then you also have commercials. It’s just not gonna happen.
As far as watching highlights, that doesn’t mean anything either. Nobody has the time to watch all of the games live. So people watch games live when they have a chance and then just watch the highlights to catch up with the rest of the games.

If you just think about it as the old basketball game you know but shorter, you'll not be able to imagine it.
Imagine this instead:
1. Less injuries
2. Less players to pay for
3. More people are able to become fans:
--- a. because it's less time consuming to be a fan
--- b. because it's easier now to be a fan here in addition to the other sport games I watch
--- c. because maybe the old version was too long for me to watch and I have a short attention span
Think about this: How many videos in YouTube have Billions of views? How many "old style" full length movies have billions of views?

If we could bring our pets to the game, I would be ok with the 10 min game. But If I think about it, 1 year of an human is like 7 for a dog, so 10 min game would be 70 min for a dog, so we have the same problem.
NBA should cut to a 2 minute game to not lose millenial dogs.

When this account gets more "And1"s than posts written ...then my life will be complete. And maybe it will be the right time to hang it up. (Achieved on 2017-2018 season)...but still here.

Well, an average NFL game has less than 10 minutes of active play and it's hugely popular, you may be onto something

The reason people i know watch highlights is either because they couldnt catch a game, because the broadcasters force you to pay for an entire new package to watch a game you want or because they are sick of all the stops and commercials in the real games.

Re: The future of basketball - 10 minute games
I mean even just watching one teams games we are talking 82 games if they don't make the playoffs in a normal season when you multiply that by 2.5-3 hours a game assuming you watch commercials. That is around 246 hours a year, even diligently following one team is a huge time commitment, so of course highlights are more popular. This isn't like Football where your team plays 16 games and then at most a handful of playoff games, you could watch like 5 teams in the NFL and spend about the same amount of time as it takes to watch one team play an 82 game season.

or you can just skip the first quarter.....if the game isn't a blowout after the 1st then you really didn't miss much.

What about it's NBA basketball right... but in pill form. And not one of those big ones that you can't swallow without water. A sweet chewable pill like a vitamin c tablet only with hip flavours for the kiddies like coca cola and mountain dew.
