Victor Oladipo Still Prefers To End Up With Heat

Post#1 » by RealGM Wiretap » Thu Jan 14, 2021 4:30 pm

Victor Oladipo was traded by the Indiana Pacers to the Houston Rockets for Caris LeVert as part of the broader James Harden trade.

Oladipo will be an unrestricted free agent this offseason and sources tell Kevin O'Connor of The Ringer that he still hopes to eventually end up with the Miami Heat.

Oladipo had reportedly wanted a trade from the Pacers for some time.

Houston could still trade Oladipo before the trade deadline.

I'm still baffled why they didn't keep LaVert. Good piece to stay competitive with on a reasonable contract.

Yeah that was really puzzling to me too.

Lavert is an imperfect player but he's simply a much better asset than Dipo at this stage.

Great move for the Pacers.

My initial thinking was, the Rockets know they don't have control of their picks for a while and have no reason to not stay competitive. Oladipo helps with that. But LaVert would have def kept them competitive and is cost controlled.

Come the deadline, I really don't know what teams will offer for him. Maybe a team on the verge of a title might give up a first for him as a rental but hard to say who.

I think they got stuck in the "we need to get the best win-now asset possible" mode.

Which is strange, it calls into question why they traded Covington for a first rounder, but everything else they've done seems to portray an interest in being competitive now.

I think Dipo will have an alright season in Houston then they'll lose him to free agency. So unless they think they're going to go deep into the playoffs with him this year (nope), then choosing him over Lavert (2 years younger, team control, reasonable price) was absolute foolishness.

And I'm a Piston fan. If anyone knows managerial foolishness when they see it, it's me.

Rockets are clearly in cost-cutting mode. I’d expect Oladipo and Tucker to be traded by end of February, and either Wall or Eric Gordon as well. They need one of their contracts along with Christian Wood and Danuel House to meet the salary floor.

With Nunn, Robinson and Herro on the team, I don't see why Miami would be interested in Vic. I think Robinson gets just as much as Oladipo in free agency this year, even if Vic has a higher AAV on his deal.

Nunn isn't close to Oladipo's level.

Dragic is 34, Dipo is 28.

Jimmy is also 31 and realistically the long-term 4 on the team (which would put Robinson at his natural 3).

Are people thinking of Butler as a 4? Could work sometimes but he's already not big for a SF, 225 lbs and wingspan+standing reach are pretty small.

Butler: 6'7" / 230 (above average for a SF)
Crowder: 6'6" / 235 - last year's starter
Harkless: 6'7" / 220 - signed as replacement
Iguodala: 6'6" / 215 - plays the 4 for MIA

Starting PF height/weight
Kristaps Porzingis (DAL): 7'3" / 240
Lauri Markkanen (CHI): 7'0" / 240
Giannis Antetokounmpo (MIL): 6'11" / 242
Jaren Jackson (MEM): 6'11" / 242
Domantas Sabonis (IND): 6'11" / 240
Kelly Olynyk (MIA): 6'11" / 240
Marvin Bagley (SAC): 6'11" / 235
Anthony Davis (NOP): 6'10" / 253 - Everyone here & above spends half their minutes at Center.
Kevin Durant (BKN): 6'10" / 240
Blake Griffin (DET): 6'9" / 250
John Collins (MIA): 6'9" / 235
Pascal Siakam (TOR): 6'9" / 230
Juan Hernangomez (MIN): 6'9" / 214
Kevin Love (CLE): 6'8" / 251
Julius Randle (NYK): 6'8" / 250
Daniel Theis (BOS): 6'8" / 245
Aaron Gordon (ORL): 6'8" / 235
Rui Hachimura (WAS): 6'8" / 230
Tobias Harris (PHI): 6'8" / 226
Marcus Morris (LAC): 6'8" / 218
Darius Bazley (OKC): 6'8" / 208
Paul Millsap (DEN): 6'7" / 257
P.J. Washington (CHA): 6'7" / 230
Robert Covington (POR): 6'7" / 209
Zion Williamson (NOP): 6'6" / 284
Jae Crowder (PHX): 6'6" / 235
Draymond Green (GSW): 6'6" / 230
DeMar DeRozan (SAS): 6'6" / 220
P.J. Tucker (HOU): 6'5" / 245
Royce O'Neale (UTA): 6'4" / 226

He'd be on the smaller end but that doesn't change his career trajectory. Most players move up a position as they get older.

Looking across the NBA, LeBron and Danny Green are the only starting SFs older than Butler.

Like I mentioned, his height is doable but he only has a 6’8 wingspan so that+his standing reach is probably average to below average for a SF. And he’s not a stretch player at all like most of the guys who play big minutes and are smaller 4a.

Anyway he could probably pull it off, just hadn’t heard that as a thing going forward.

Butler is already undersized and out of position at SF. He's more 6'6 and a natural SG.

I don't know how you guys got there, but with Oladipo, he'd be the three, other than that he's best off as a SG imo.

When I say long-term, I mean next year and beyond. Defensively, he won't have any issues. I mean, DeMar DeRozan is a 4 right now.

The main thing is he plays like a PG on offense. Similar to DeRozan, he needs the ball in his hands bc he isn't a good enough shooter to play off it. It's essentially why the Heat have effectively been starting a "SG" at PG the last two years.

The Heat want defense & shooting around Butler and don't care a ton where it comes. it's not a big deal if Oladipo is their Jae Crowder and it's logical to shift Butler up at that point rather than mess w/ the rest of the lineup.

Per the NBA, he's 6'7" without shoes.
He isn't undersized at SF, he has above average size there. SF has been shrinking every year as teams go to 3-guard alignments (the most extreme example: 6'1" Langston Galloway is legitimately a SF this season).

Starting SF Height / Weight
Michael Porter Jr (DEN): 6'10" / 218 (his backup is last year's starter Will Barton: 6'5" / 181)
LeBron James (LAL): 6'9" / 250
Kyle Anderson (MEM): 6'9" / 230
Deni Advija (WAS): 6'9" / 210
Harrison Barnes (SAC): 6'8" / 225
T.J. Warren (IND): 6'8" / 220
Bojan Bogdanovic (UTA): 6'8" / 216
Patrick Williams (CHI): 6'8" / 215
Jayson Tatum (BOS): 6'8" / 210 - Started at PF last year
Jerami Grant (DEN): 6'8" / 210 - Likewise played PF most of career
OG Anunoby (TOR): 6'7" / 232
Jimmy Butler (MIA): 6'7" / 230
Kawhi Leonard (LAC): 6'7" / 230
Gordon Hayward (BOS): 6'7" / 225
DeAndre Hunter (ATL): 6'7" / 225
Khris Middleton (MIL): 6'7" / 222
Dorian Finney-Smith (DAL): 6'7" / 220
Kelly Oubre (GSW): 6'7" / 203
Brandon Ingram (NOP): 6'7" / 190
Isaac Okoro (CLE): 6'6" / 225
Joe Harris (BKN): 6'6" / 220
Danuel House (HOU): 6'6" / 220
Derrick Jones Jr (POR): 6'6" / 210 - he literally played PF w/ the Heat last year!!!
James Ennis (ORL): 6'6" / 215
Danny Green (PHI): 6'6" / 215
R.J. Barrett (NYK): 6'6" / 214
Mikal Bridges (PHX): 6'6" / 209 (his backup is Langston Galloway: 6'1" / 200. Payne/Carter/Galloway w/ 6'8" /210 Cam Johnson at 4)
Keldon Johnson (SAS): 6'5" / 220
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander (OKC); 6'5" / 180
Josh Okogie (MIN): 6'4" / 213 (he's a PF in the closing lineup)

Butler is 12th in Height and 3rd in Weight.
23 of 30 starters fall in the 6'6" to 6'8" range.

TLDR he isn't an undersized SF.

I don't know how you guys got there, but with Oladipo, he'd be the three, other than that he's best off as a SG imo.

Robinson (6'7" / 215) would be the three. You would rather Oladipo be point of attack on the perimeter for obvious reasons.
