Butler is already an NBA level PG with how he sees the court, run PNR, uses screens, plays off-ball, how he cuts and relocates, so good and underrated

Some major revisionist history going on here with Quickley’s stock after his freshman year. He may not have even been drafted as a freshman. The only reason the Knicks, or any other team, liked him as a first rounder this year was due to his extremely impressive sophomore season where he developed into a knockdown shooter who was clearly the best player on that Kentucky team.

To say it’s not impressive that these guys have thrived in the NBA is disingenuous. Most of them weren’t bonafide top 10 candidates who were seen as locks to be drafted early or star in the NBA. Guys like Booker, Herro, Washington, Quickley, SGA and to a lesser extent Keldon Johnson were great HS prospects but weren’t seen as the absolute elite can’t-miss prospects in their class. Adebayo was a top 10 prospect but not seen as a certain star. Yet some of them have already turned into elite NBA players.

The point is not that they improve their draft stock, the point is they develop the necessary skills to in time become elite NBA players, which is the ultimate goal for these guys. Becoming an NBA star/contributor will net them far more money than a high draft pick will.

I'm not really understanding where all this Kentucky/Cal hate is coming from. As crows2 pointed out, a lot of the names being thrown out weren't guaranteed 1AD NBA prospects. Cal has a recruiting system in place that seemingly focuses on player development and gets his guys ready for the NBA. With his actual offensive game plan, he tries to make it so that it doesn't rely too much on a single player. It limits the mistakes of his players in a way where it plays to their strengths. It's also important to note that everyone with major minutes are freshmen. That makes it even harder. He doesn't get the benefit of having experienced juniors and seniors helping out on the floor.

Even if you don't necessarily agree with Cal's game plan and think it hides his player's offensive abilities (Devin Booker), the rookie contract matters a lot less than 2nd contract. I'd argue that no other organization in college can get players ready for the next level like Kentucky does. Yeah it's only 1 year, but it's a crucial one that bridges the transition from highschool basketball to the NBA.

I think this is just a very raw freshman class for Kentucky. Brandon Boston Jr has definitely disappointed.

What are the thoughts on the Tennessee guys so far, Springer and Johnson?

Keon is a long term project, but I really like him for a team that knows how to develop talent. Great athlete with strong defensive instincts and I like his vision. His shot is a work in progress & his handle will need more polish, but he seems to be a hard working kid who has shown good skill progression to this point. So I feel pretty good about bettering on him to make that progress.

I'm less high on Springer, he's stronger & more physically developed, but his vision hasn't impressed me yet. So I'm not sure why he's considered to be more of a PG prospect than Johnson.

both Springer and Keon will be a lot better in the NBA than in college, their game is more tailored for the pros, physical profiles are a +, and are versatile positionally. both are top20 guys.

Both impress me. But I have to say that Springer's vision has impressed me. He's going to be a good one in the NBA!

I only had eyes on him in his final minute before he fouled out but saw his monster stat line. What really stuck out tonight from him?

I’ve liked Springer since high school. He’s a baller. Might be a nice mid-late 1st rounder if he’s still available then.

Johnson still needs to prove he’s capable of fulfilling his potential.

Thoughts on Sandro Mamu from Seton Hill? Really gives me Jokic vibes, stylistically at least.

Stylistically is the right word. The last 5 games, he's averaged 5 to's a game - too much considering he's a senior. Obviously not a rim protector. I think he's a late 2nd round pick.

Very true. Kind of what I thought, would be an interesting project for a team who can develop players.

rebounding+transition, Ben Simmons like, not quite as fast/strong as Simmons but pretty ridiculous in that capacity himself, obviously the shooting is a biggie too, love how aggro he is on the boards, elite instincts and positioning there.

still has weird body language overall which turns me off a little on him but he was pretty absurd last night regardless.

I've noticed the body language stuff in previous games of his. I can't parse out if it's competitive fire or negative attitude. Watched the highlights today. He looks a little leaner/nimbler than he did against Coppin St.

Just dropped my semi-scouting video on Corey Kispert. Come for the hoops breakdown, stay for the outdated pop culture references.
