Re: Jays also trying for Brantley
Why? We need pitching, specifically starting pitching. This should be a priority not 4th outfielders

Re: Jays also trying for Brantley
While Brantley makes very little sense from a positional standpoint (we're well and truly set with corner OF/DH types), there's a price point where you sign him and then move a Gurriel or Teoscar in a deal for a real pitching upgrade. But it's not a price point I really see Brantley signing at.

**** your asterisk.

Re: Jays also trying for Brantley
If we move Hernandez, who plays RF?
If we move Gurriel, we better be getting a stud back. Above average players entering their prime on a team-friendly deal don't grow on trees - Gurriel is poised to deliver a massive amount of surplus value over the next 4 years of team control.
Brantley might buy you more consistency/predictability over a guy like Tellez at DH, but otherwise I really don't see much point. The money is much better spent elsewhere IMO.

Nick Nurse recounting his first meeting with Kawhi:
“We could have gone forever. (Raptors management) kept knocking on the door and I was like, ‘A couple more minutes.’ Because we were really into it."

Yeah, that's essentially what you'd be looking at. Moving Gurriel for a young, well-regarded pitcher on a team that has young pitching to burn and a set rotation, but could use a corner OF (particularly one on a reasonable contract). And it would help if they have a tendency to wheel and deal.
...so, the Padres.

**** your asterisk.

Re: Jays also trying for Brantley
I feel like Grichuk is definitely a goner, and if we sign Brantley, he would be the 4th OF that DH's on days where Teo/Springer/Gurriel all play.
Regardless, I think that Grichuk is a goner.

You can also trade the surplus from one position to fill holes at another. Just need to think outside the box sometimes.

Nurse is below average at best.
Masai is overrated.
I dont get how so many people believe in the raptors, they have zero to chance to win it all.

I dont see Grichuk being moved for anything but another bloated salary this offseason.
It'd probably be Gurriel.

Wouldn't expect to get much for him, but Grichuk is probably movable. Joc Pederson's projection was 2 years at a $9m AAV and Grichuk's on 3 years at $10.3m AAV...they're fairly similar players, handedness aside, with Pederson having a better overall history but a much worse 2020. A team like the Tigers that are known to want a bit of offense, and have no immediate payroll issues (nor any likelihood that they'll be competing soon) would make sense.

If going for another outfielder type would you rather have Brantley or Jackie Bradley Jr. I'm assuming the later would mean a longer term deal than Brantley?

Brantley makes way more sense, he is still an outstanding bat and he is a lefty which the team is light on.
JBJ give you value in the field and on the bases, but he wouldn't be playing CF with Springer in town so his value is minimal to the Jays.
When you can add a guy like Brantley to the lineup you take the opportunity and use surplus assets for areas of need. The Jays still have plenty of payroll flexibility.

Re: Jays also trying for Brantley
i see the play. who goes and for what pitcher? i'd imagine they'd rather keep guri and trade teo
and i'd dump randy in a minute but don't think we'll find much takers for his contract.

This. Dependent on the price, allows for some flexibility to trade either for pitching, although I would think Grichuk would also attract some interest. Also gives you another left handed bat and a guy that can get on base

I guess it depends on what the objective is with the Jays. They've always preached run prevention. If that's the case, Bradley probably gives you more flexibility as he's shown in the past he can play all three OF positions. If you're looking for more runs, Brantley has definitely been the more consistent bat.

Yes, there are a number of secondary media posters saying a deal was done last night.
