Same reason Zion isn't. The West is tough for young guys.

They were too young. And they were squeezed by SA, Memphis, Utah, Dallas, LAC, GSW, LAL, Denver, OKC and Portland.Sundov wrote:Can someone explain why Randle-AD-Jrue didnt work in New Orleans? That seems like the perfect trio and covered up Julius Randle's defensive deficiencies (at least at the time). AD has proven he's a top 5 player, we know Jrue could be the best defensive guard in the league, and Randle was putting up similar numbers back then that he is now.
The reason why its an important question is because if we keep him we have to hope he will realistically be our second option on a team that makes a push in a few years. But if the Pelicans could barely make the playoffs with him as their second option then this may not be the right strategy.

Yes, you don't give up on a player when he is hitting his prime and playing well for his current team.

if a team is offering their first rounder or multiple first rounders, you pull the trigger. if you can come away with 3 first rounders in a stacked draft class, that's gravy.
it's just the way it is, build this team for rj barrett ... not julius randle, no matter how great he's playing.

but also if they don't trade him, they have a great player on their team.
they're in a win/win situation with julius randle.

He just needed to up his BBIQ significantly (and it'd be nice if he developed a right hand) and Thibs is helping him get there.
Its just so unlikely for someone to go from that windmilling , turnover prone, ball hog to Mini Lebron in one season...I still cant fully wrap my head around it.

More like being coached for the first time in his life. Being coached, the coach putting him in positions to succeed, being held accountable for bad habits, all made a difference.RHODEY wrote:prophet_of_rage wrote:It's called learning. He is more like mini jocic inho rather than bron. Last season fiz wanted him to be bron with disastrous results. Fiz wanted randle to create/drive from the perimeter. Thibs put him in the higb post.

If the Knicks opt out of Randle's contract the way he's playing you'd have to think what agents (forget other players) will be thinking when it comes to dealing with the Knicks. I mean just think about it. I'm an agent. I'm thinking about bringing my player to NY to play. The Knicks offer a contract that includes an option. I look at what they did with a guy like Randle and his option. What am I going to think as far as being ok with an option? Am I going to be ok with it or am I going to play hardball? Or, am I just going to say "you know what, the Knicks front office is still doing stupid things, let's get you signed with some other team." If Randle continues to play like he's playing, the Knicks need to do the right thing and not opt out of his contract for next season...unless you know multiple someone's much better are coming FOR SURE (not cause Tommy Beer or the Talking Clam said so).
Facts! It’s only right to bring him back. Good to see you moo
Glad to be back. Looks like some (many) folks were wrong (overreacted) on our boy Randle.
I don't think we overreacted. Last season he was genuinely bad and no one thought he had the intelligence or drive to become better so most wanted him gone. I challenge anyone here to prove they saw or expected THIS level of improvement or even close to it . I for one will admit, I'm it still totally shocks and I fully admit I was WRONG about him. I'll eat my crow happily

Re: Julius Randle: Should we pick up his 2021-2 Team option
He’s also more at ease as a passer and understanding how the offense can benefit him. Kenny Payne, the Knicks assistant and his former University of Kentucky coach, is a familiar face, and visited Randle in Dallas in the offseason as a bridge to the coaching staff.
Randle watched film of Thibodeau’s offenses in Chicago and Minnesota in the offseason to see what actions he ran. He recognized that Thibodeau ran plays similar to what Randle did with the Pelicans and that he would have to be more of a playmaker in his second season in New York.
Randle has become more adept at not only drawing fouls but also timely ones. He’s had an and-one on 31.7 percent of his shooting fouls, which puts him in the 70th percentile among bigs, according to Cleaning The Glass, and he’s in the 92nd percentile in fouls drawn per team play.
When he barrels down the lane, he can take contact and still finish off his shots, and he’s shooting 77.1 percent from the line, the best of his career.
Randle’s play this season is a sharp turnaround from his first with the Knicks. Last season, David Fizdale coronated Randle as his point-forward early in training camp but Randle sometimes looked overwhelmed in an offense that seemed to offer him no guardrails.
“There was a lot of expectations,” Relph said of last season, “with no direction.”
This year, he is using as much of the offense as last season but playing more efficiently. His decision-making is improved and he moves quicker. This year, 27.1 percent of his shots have come after three dribbles or more; last season it was at 31.9 percent.

Randle sucked for us when we had Fizdale, then when we bring in Thibs who is at least an NBA caliber coach, and implement a system, he immediately turns it around and becomes a much better player.

I feel like Randle’s last 2 seasons are much better than Hardaway’s best season on Dallas though. That’s why I never liked the comparison. Plus I always felt like Randle had star potential, always felt role player vibes with Hardaway. I agree Randle struggled under Fiz (which was like 1/4th of the season) but he finished strong under Miller imo.
Looking at Hardaway’s stats on Dallas, it’s still very similar to his numbers in 17-18 with us. Only real difference is his 3 PG% is higher. He’s kinda the same player. I guess he just worked on his jumper.
All of this is moot anyways. Just happy that Randle is breaking out

To be fair, Payton has been playing real well this season. Better than when he was with Orlando or the Pelicans. Definitely better than last season.

* Randle won't pass to Mitch... Thibs: Randle and Mitch pick n roll
* Randle won't pass to RJ... RJ for layups or open jumpers from passes via Randle
* Randle won't play defense... who has abused him? NOONE
