Trading him for Simmons would be a no brainer IF we knew Simmons is done improving as a player. But we all know Simmons can be a beast offensive player two years from now, Kyrie won't be needed by then, as Simmons will have developed as an all level scorer, which is what we lack.
So trading him or not trading him, I feel either one is a valid choice and can't really fault anyone for it. Ultimately, Simmons has a 1st ballot HOF trajectory, so not trading him seems like the better option long term.
Simmons hasnt shown the trajectory to be a H.O.F. Some of you guys seem to be in denial about him.
Ben's HOF trajectory would involve him not being on a team with Embiid or a similar 5 who lives next to the hoop and demands a lot of touches, as long as they continue playing together Ben can't seem to get the motivation to push it to the next level.
I'm pretty sure Ben's passiveness started after his 1st season incident where he knocked Joel in the face whilst both going for a rebound , Joel cried alot over that and since then Ben seems less aggressive whilst playing with Joel.
When Joel was out of the team for long stretches Ben slowly increased his aggression to a level where he led the team to wins over Lebron and Kawahi etc.
But Ben with Joel will always be a passive Ben
Best to let him free or trade Joel, keeping both is counter productive and honestly vindictive.
