Tim Duncan "hates a lot of things" about the modern NBA

Post#1 » by LakerLegend » Fri Jan 22, 2021 12:07 am

"There's a lot of things that I like and enjoy about it, and there's a lot of things that I hate about it," Duncan said. "I hate the way the game's being officiated at times, how they've underpowered the effect of a post player so that you're allowed to beat the crap out of a post player. You're allowed to take him off his spot. You're allowed to hit him, bump him while they're shooting. But if you turn and face and go out to the 3-point line, and you shoot the ball and fall down, all of a sudden, the whistle is blown.

"So they're protecting the shooters away from the basket. It overpowers some of the players that are away from the basket, and it underpowers post players who use their bodies and their physicality around the basket."

There’s a ton of things I hate about the modern NBA, too. Tim is a legend.

Valid points.
It's ridiculous how the NBA has changed to be more advantageous for perimeter players.

It's true. He brings up great points outside of the cliches we hear about today's game, that is post players are allowed to get mauled. Imo they also never get the benefit of the doubt on blocks and charges. If you're going to swallow the whistle in the post then do it both ways.

The reason the Tim Duncan face meme exists because the best defensive big men(usually the best defenders on the court) are a referendum on how the game is called.

It's been progressively been called softer since he entered the league at the end of the 90's.
The Greatest of All Time debate in basketball is essentially who has the greatest basketball resume of the player who has the best highlights instead of who is the best player

I've been saying the same thing for years. He's absolutely 100% correct.

It's not about "old man at the clouds". He's RIGHT. Objectively right. The game is officiated in a way to make certain outcomes inevitable, to make certain players OP and others obsolete. It's intentional, or at least inevitable.

In some ways it's almost kind of cheating, but at a league level. Manipulated outcomes to be sure.

I like the way he said this, though. It doesn't minimize the greatness of the perimeter players we have, but it points out how much the game has been oriented away from post play in just its officiating. They need to figure out a way to address it that preferably reduces the amount of foul calls rather than increases it (IMO).

All the more reason why the game has slowly shifted to being a 3-point-shooting festival

You are allowed to bump and be physical on the perimeter as long as you don't affect the shot. You are also allowed, inside, to own the space you're in. Its much more routine that opposing players "own" the same space on the interior, and extremely unlikely that it happens on the perimeter. On the perimeter, you take a shot expecting to land cleanly. You dont usually have someone inside your jersey when you take the shot. In the paint, its very different.

What exactly does he want? The hand-check rule coming back? Or does he want more fouls on the interior?

Nah, this is just an old man complaining about a sport naturally evolving. No one hits singles and moves the runner over anymore! No one runs the ball 40 times a game anymore! Sports evolve and players need to to stay relevant.

It would be nice to find a balance where any skill sets aren’t marginalized. I’m sure it won’t ever happen. While I don’t enjoy teams spamming threes I also didn’t enjoy the eras where players couldn’t shoot and the game was more about physicality than skill.

Bigs are really screwed over by the rules. I have issues with how easy it is for bigs to get into foul trouble. If a perimeter player drives, and it's so easy to drive when everybody's scared of the 3 point shot, bigs sometimes literally have to move away if they want to avoid the foul call. If bigs could have more personal fouls allowed, at least your starting C, I think it would balance a lot of that out, because teams whose 1st option is a big often can't play him because of the foul trouble, like Jokic, Embiid, Towns etc.

You also used to be able to have fistfights and stay in the game. And in the NFL you could play through a concussion. The leagues do more to protect athletes and their long-term well being. So of course fans hate it
