lakers flaw and concern at this point.

Post#1 » by lalalaker » Tue Jan 19, 2021 8:55 am

We lost to GSW but shouldnt be in a panic mode. People will surely write lakers off at this time because they want to compare us to newly formed nets and any negative result is just a fuel to their fire. I believe it was one of those games where lakers couldnt do everything perfect for such a long stretch of games and nor should they look to do so. have 3 4 good wins in a row and then a loss isnt a bad thing. But it dont mean lakers are perfect and there are areas where they can improve on and here is my primary concern.

Lakers as a team is looking to help too much on defense leaving someone wide open and come on in nba you cant leave players open at all at the 3 point line. what is means is dont chase off screens but switch instead or just try not to give up the lane too much on 1on1 defense. its better opponents shoot contested 2s than a wide open 3s especially against gsw who shoots alot of them. while lakers have shooters like mathews and kuzma and all, these guys shoot so fast even when open to a point where they dont look like they are shooting in rhythm.

My other concern is a quote i saw from perkins about lakers not letting THT play to reduce his value so noone would swoop him up for huge price next season once his contract is up. I get it from business side but he cant let him just rot in bench playing so well this season and what do they do come playoff time when he might be of great help to us. I do not understand how he all of a sudden is DNP CD. Leaves me in wonder as to why we dont use a good rotational player just rest for such a reason.

I doubt they’re keeping him away. It’s not like GMs can’t watch replays.

DNP CD could mean that he’s testing out Matthews in his place for the next five games. Frank makes changes every fifth game and runs with it. Unless they’re seriously deep into trade talks, where sitting him would mean assurance that no injuries are added. Many other players in the past who suddenly sat like that were traded within a few days.

In this case, I think it’s just Frank trying his new pieces.

We can kill this team warriors easy, but we do have problems. We are going for long stretches without scoring. That is not a warrior game problem. That has been happening past several games. Just Big Giant Dry Spells. Don't score for minutes and minutes. Many possessions turnovers and clanks. Bad shots or over passing or late clock bricks. No ball movement at times, stagnation. Just too much inefficiency on the offense side of the ball, where we take these long a** dry spells of not scoring.

Watch the game last nite. It was countless the number of times the warriors just went right to the hoop to lay it in. There was no defensive movement at all.
If it was just a nite of laziness, I can take that, but if it is a glaring foundational hole in our defense, I am very concerned.

15 game checkpoint at 11-4 tells me somebody needs to tell AD and LBJ that the Champagne hangover must be over now.

It’s time to dig deep and start dialing in the details. Who knows how long this season will be.

No time to lose.

Rim protection will be the biggest issue until it's addressed.

Lakers looked better last season. This season's team is still lacking a real identity and LeBron is a year older.

Montrezl and Schroeder are feasting in the regular season but in the playoffs teams won't be afraid to let them go at it and defensively they are more liabilities than assets.

I think they have about 55 games left to play so to a point, I understand that they are Still pacing themselves. But still, this team is so deep that they can sit Lebron or AD and still win vs weak teams if they give their 100% effort. I made a separate thread detailing how they esp AD have fallen in love with the easy route of taking a ton of 16 footers.

Concerns we get lack a daysicaly on offense and randomly shoot and over pass way too much KCP had wide open 3 the other night but passes. I know its long season by our lack of focus is bit concerning. Rim protection is fine when we give damn. Lebron needs to go rack more and AD needs the ball more in the post. Im not liking gasol at all.. Can we get Javal back?

I do agree. I wish Lebron would clean up his act sometimes he throws one too many football passes (luckily AD is very adept at intercepting those) and they get turned over because lot of them look like Hail Marys.
Also he does one too many needless 3pters that are like 5 feet behind the arc.

Just making better choices in cleaning that above (that does not need effort, it is just a mental clean up) we can save on 6 points per game on turnovers I think.

Just too many needlesss turnovers.
Also we dont defend the basket too well these days.

I disagree.

Blocking shots is not the only aspect of rim protection.

Positioning to discourage driving is rim protection. Contests at the basket is protecting the rim. Charges, walling off the lane, that is all rim protection.

The Lakers are one of the top shot blocking teams in the league, and they lead the league in charges drawn. They are the top defense in the entire NBA right now.

The Lakers are not the raw shotblocking team that they were last season, but they have no problem “protecting the rim”.

I am confused by all the contradictions in defensive stats this year compared to last season.

The rim protection doesn't bother me one bit. AD's been chilling his a.ss off, so far this season. Dwight and McGee would be far worse off, if AD played like this last year.

My biggest concern since the beginning of the season is Schroeder's fit. Great hard working player on a good contract, but the dude just doesn't help anyone other than Bron's aging legs - which doesn't take much. Matthew Dellevadova could've done that job for a vet minimum.

His vision, P&R technique and poor passing are more apparent after the 15 games we've played now, and I simply don't like the fit. A true PG would work wonders exploiting the P&R potential of possibly the two best Roll guys in the league(Trez & AD).

But Lebron coined a nickname for him, so unfortunately I don't think we'll find a solution anytime soon.

Badly missing Rondo right now.

I've got my eyes of Ricky Rubio. Rubio's role has been substantially marginalized with the Wolves, next to Russel, which makes him a buyout candidate. Be great if we could get him, even for a reserve role, although I am certain that won't be the case for long because of his ability to pass.

It does over crowd our bench even more, but he's the perfect final piece of the jigsaw for the hobos which makes them true contenders, so maybe this can be a bit of a Reggie Jackson tit-for-tat.

I think our issues are all regular season concerns.

1) The rotation: We're playing too many guys at the moment. But, it's early in the season and it's good to get everyone court time at this season, especially with the current record we have. We don't need to worry too much about record, seeding, etc. But I'm sure once the post-season comes, our rotation will be:

Schroder, KCP, AD, LeBron, Gasol (limited minutes depending on matchup)
Caruso, Harrell, Kuzma, Wes

2) Our mindset. We won a championship. We had a very small off-season and there's no fans. There's gonna be nights where we're lackadaisical, where we're doing weird things, where we're stuck in mud, etc.

My bad.. Rubio's tied up till 2022. Covid year threw off my calc. Sorry.

Schroeder is indeed an amazingly talented role player. I'm just clamoring for some legit P&R game for Trez & AD.

Lebron's one of the best at it, but he doesn't seem to wanna do it at all since the 2019 preseason when they were spamming it like it was going out of style. Maybe it's the secret weapon if and when we find out match in the playoffs.

BTW.. These 15 games in 2020-21 is the first instance of a Lebron team having a net positive +/- (1.7) with him off the floor. We're fine!
