Nesmith looks quite comfortable playing to his read of the situation. He's just slow in reading the floor, which is very excusable at his level of experience.

Also, I'd say that his style of play is more like Tatum's (long icy glider) than Brown's (fire and force).

Really want him to take Javonte’s minutes. It’s a crime he’s getting 20 mins a night when realistically he should still be playing in Europe

This article has a clip of the play where Nesmith missed a corner 3, then ran down the court to get a deflection in transtion.

https://www.celticsblog.com/2021/1/26/22250376/jayson-tatum-returns-to-key-a-team-effort-10-takeaways-from-boston-celtics-chicago-bulls

I'm calling attention to the play because:

-- First Nesmith hopped aimlessly on one foot a couple of times, watching whether the shot fell.
-- Then he ran for a couple of paces down the court with no special urgency.
-- Only then did he go into an all-out sprint, arriving under the opposing basket just in time to break up the Bull's fast break.

I.e., it was an admirably good play and yet also one that he has a lot of upside from as he matures.

What? Javonte is a legit NBA player. Lot worse guys you can have at the end of the bench.

The answer is in the middle. J Green deserves to be in the NBA, but he is NOT a rotational piece in the playoffs and should never play over our lottery picks (Nesmith/Lanford)

He's a great hardscrabble story to prop up in front of those draft picks though to get them to buy in and play defense (and the 'right' way on offense). If it's that and a few highlight dunks, and a likable guy off the court, we'll have gotten a fantastic return on what we invested in Javonte (a summer league spot and two years very minimal salary).

He's also JT's best friend on the team. And it seems like they are actual friends, not league friends.

Dude seems to work his a$$ off too. Again, way worse guys you can have at the end of your bench.

Yeah and that shot, while it's always been a struggle. I cringe when he has to relocate on passes.

Yet he's made quite a few shots last night where it was just a stand still catch and shoot opportunity.

As you said, and as a lot of people keep saying as this year is an exception, it's excusable for him to read the floor slowly.

Honestly I'm way more concerned with his inability to play even passing defense than his shot at this point. But hopefully that will come with reads too.

Stackhouse was said to be playing an NBA offense in college but alas college is still college. And going from a starter there and last year getting fed often to a role player on a team is a change along with the pace of the NBA game being so much faster than the infinite time you get on the shot clock in college.

Where did I say he was a rotational piece in the playoffs? And if our rooks can't beat him out for minutes that is more of an indictment of them than Green. You need youngsters to earn minutes, not just get them handed out.

Jordan Crawford was traded for two 2nd round picks back in 2014. Maybe we can do the same for Javonte if we ever need that roster spot hehe.

Javonte's got to win Eastern Conference Player of the Week first.

Which would require the season going in a really, really strange direction.

didn't mean to imply you said that. Just that Javonte is more than Europe but less than an NBA playoff level contributor.

If a team invests in a lottery pick, which I consider a big investment, and I must also presume they did a lot of Homework on that player, it is in the best interest of the team and player to take steps in seeing that player develops as soon as he can.

So IMO a player develops far better with hard work at practice and IN GAME EXPERIENCE. anything less than that slows the progression.

I think with injuries and Covid, he is an excellent end of the bench player who is good enough to fill in for many in short spurts. If he was a MUCH better shooter I'd be screaming for him to start. But despite some flashes, he doesn't appear the catch and shoot type. Who knows in a year or 2. See J Brown

I know it goes against the national media's lazy narrative, but if I remember right Jaylen shot 35% from 3 as a rookie and 40% in his second year.

Just checked, here's Jaylen's career 3pt% by year:
1st year -- 34%
2nd year -- 40%
3rd year -- 34%
last year -- 38%
this year -- 44%(HOT!)

Back to the topic of this thread, I expect Nesmith to be:
1st year -- 44%
2nd year -- 52%
3rd year -- 76%
4th year -- 11175%
5th year -- physics breaks down
