He came out guns blazing in the first quarter but I missed his imprint during the second half, I thought Simmons had a bigger impact during that stretch. As for the Lakers, LeBron is playing Cavs mode again, as AD seems to continue to stink it up. Dude couldn't hit a free throw to save his life. Disappointed because I thought he would take that next step as an MVP candidate. I didn't think LeBron nor Embiid came out as a clear winner of that 'matchup'.

Embiid was clearly the best player on the floor playing against the Champs, LeBron and AD

Well this didn't age well. Two 2nd half points and blown out by the worst team in the East (well, 2nd worst) without AD.

Dutchball97 wrote:I wonder how much time Kawhi will miss. The MVP race is still close so every game he doesn't play, while others continue to add to their stats is going to see him slip in the rankings. I have him 3rd behind Jokic and Embiid at the moment but I'm already contemplating putting LeBron ahead of him, while KD also isn't too far behind. Doncic and Vucevic have been lights out but you can't win MVP with a losing record and I don't think Giannis, Dame and Steph have played well enough to get serious MVP consideration. AD should be somewhere in the conversation but it's hard to win the award with LeBron on your team. Jaylen Brown is another guy who is still firmly in the race but if we're being realistic he's not a likely candidate.

I think Kawhi has been the best player, but with him sitting out recently, I would probably also move him behind Jokic and Embiid. Anyway, I have a formula, so I don't have to think!!!!!!!!!!!!!

And yeah, KD is top five.

I'd also include Conley, which will draw ridicule, but I think he was like 40 points ahead of the next closest player in +/- before last night. He was like +150 and then LeBron and Kawhi were like +110. Then he was +14 last night, tops on the team, as usual.

Maybe the real MVP is Conley+Gobert. Can GobCon become a thing?

No, it can't, I know.

I'll probably post the next results of my formula like next Tuesday or Wednesday morning.

Embiid a clear number 1 for mine right now.

Then I have Jokic, LBJ and KD sitting just behind, with KD probably leading that group, but it's pretty close.

I think injury may be the biggest factor in this year's MVP. I still can't see Embiid playing enough games. I hope he does, but I just don't know.

Right now, as far as players who can actually win it:

Jokic
Embiid
LeBron
Kawhi

Durant just isn't going to be in the running for obvious reasons.

Luka and Curry aren’t within a country mile of MVP right now.

They need to get their teams to a mid seed by the end of the season to be in the conversation. Which will be a tough task given the talent of their teams ( well unless KP is healthy enough).

Ugh they are like 1 game or 2 from a mid seed. Curry is top 3 in real plus minus while most of his team is in the negative. Everyone said at the beginning of the season they would be bottom dwellers.
Lakers are 3rd seed with 2 first teamers and by far the best roster in the west, yet lebron is mvp favorite after losing the the pistons without AD.

Why? Bc they are a couple games from 1st seed. So are the warriors from a 4/5 seed.
Let's not pretend like the warriors aren't in the hunt, cause that's like saying the lakers aren't in the hunt for 1st seed.

A great player on a mid tier team doesn’t equate to an MVP, unless you do historic stuff in a weak MVP year like Westbrook. Curry isn’t winning unless the Warriors end with a top 3 seed.

So a player with a top 3 seed can win MVP even though he plays with another NBA 1st team player?

I don’t make the rules, but that’s historically been the case. You need to be on a top team and one of the best players in the league. Westbrook was an anomaly, but he averaged a triple double for the first time in 50-something years.

We know that LeBron and Durant are two of the best players in the league, and they’re the best players on two of the best teams in the league. So they’re in the convo. Luka and Curry are not, their teams are trash so far, and I don’t think they’ve necessarily even been better individually than LeBron or Durant.

Gobert is more of an MVP candidate than Curry or Luka as of right now.
