Free agents will not sign here is not a scare tactic. It's just reality. Many teams have that problem. Raptors are not special.
2018 Tankers: This team can't win a championship. We can't trade for a superstar. We have no path to victory.
2021 Tankers: This team can't win a championship. We can't trade for another superstar We have no path to victory.
If you say so.
You’d have a point if you weren’t missing something something pretty obvious. Our team in 2018 was good - 1st in the east good. Our team in 2021 - not so good. We had a lot of young assets and peak Lowry in 2018. In 2021 we have aging Lowry and not as many trade assets. If we trade for a star right now we’d be average at best.
Go to the 2017 off-season. We had just got rid of Patterson and Cory Joseph and lost PJ Tucker in free agency. Most people thought we lost a lot of depth with no upside. We just got swept by the Cavs. Lowry was 31 turning 32 and many thought he was reaching the end of his prime.
We had a raw 27th pick in Siakam, a decent 20th pick in Delon and undrafted unknown in Fred who didn't play in his rookie season.
Very few predicted Siakam, Fred etc. would lead us with the best bench in the league.
