6th Man & MIP Discussion

Post#1 » by bwgood77 » Fri Jan 29, 2021 7:22 pm

I figure with all the ROY and MVP discussion, which usually only centers around a handful of players, we could discuss the guys you think should be in the running or at least considered for these awards.

I will set polls based on who people mention in this thread at some point. I may also had DPOY to the discussion at some point too.

I hope a PF|C wins 6th man this time. We haven't had that in a while. But probably will be Clarkson from Utah... It's a "microwave scorer off the bench" award.

Can't tell whether that's irony since a PF/C won just last season, or meant seriously since the award always went to guards the years before :-?

Oh, right, I totally forgot. I thought it was Lou again  Ok, let's give it to a defensive big who rebounds, Taj Gibson style.

Clarkson is having a lot more than a volume microwave year right now. 17.9 ppg 4.6 rb 1.9 assists with an eFG% of 58.4 in 25 min/game. Those are borderline all star numbers. 6th man is his to lose so far.

You might get your wish. I think Chris Boucher on Toronto will win 6th man of the year this year

My pick for MIP is Jerami Grant with Christian Wood a close 2nd. They are the only 2 serious candidates this year imo

I like Grant for MIP at this point. Wood and Boucher are good choices too.

Another two guys who deserve to be in the convo are Embiid and Jaylen Brown. They prob won't win because they were already good, but they are vastly improved this season.

Is Boucher coming off the bench still? I would hope Nurse realizes he needs to be starting for that team.

6th man right now is between Clarkson and Patty Mills. MIP I'm giving to Wood with Grant and then Boucher close behind

Yeah the jump from very good to star is the biggest jump. I think Embiid was already a superstar though clearly having a career year to date. But what Jaylen has done greatly exceeds those other guys. Every year multiple guys step into bigger roles given new opportunities. Impressive and worthy of note, but Jaylen would be hands down my winner of this award.

Grant and Wood both great choices for MIP. Pistons should have had them both!

6th man seems like its wide open this year.

I'm happy to hear your take on Jaylen. I thought about saying he was my pick but thought I'd just sound like a homer haha. But yeah, he's playing better this season at age 24 than a lot of Celtics fans thought he'd be at his peak. Wasn't even an allstar last year and this year he's on pace for All NBA.

this is a pretty stacked year for MIP, Grant, Wood, Randle, Sexton and Brown all have good cases for it, i'd even throw Sabonis in there as well

Well, I think its quite early to tell who are the 6MOY contenders.

But for MIP my opinions is that Grant and Woods are comfortably ahead of the competition. Grant is putting nice numbers, but Detroit is dreadful. Woods is putting slight worse numbers but is a important part in a team I think will make the playoffs.

MIP should be Jerami Grant or Jaylen Brown imo. I think Grant probably made the biggest jump, going from role player just taking spot ups/finishing plays in transition or off cuts to a 1st option 24ppg scorer who can get his own shot. Honorable mention to Sexton. Jaylen Brown is just on another level right now and looks like he's gonna become a perennial MVP candidate over the next 5-7 years.

Wood was every bit this good last season actually (22/11 on excellent efficiency per 36), Casey just never gave him the mins because he sucks as a coach.
