I'm very comfortable now with building around RJ. He's 20 and his skillset is already near complete. Now it is just a process of further refinements and taking it to another level. He is clearly a star in the making

Hindsight may show we picked the best player in RJ's draft

Combined with Mitch at 33 and IQ at 25, I'd say this rebuilding through the draft thing is working

RJ was bashed earlier in the season because he was playing even worse then last year and Knicks fans were pissed because nothing ever goes right for us so it's good that he's playing well now it gives us something to cheer for until Dolan wears the infinity guantlet and snaps.

RJ when this thread was created:
15.4/7.4/3.6 on 35/13/78 with .423 TS

RJ since this thread:
18.5/6.5/3.3 on 45/36/74 with .533 TS

Still a bit below average TS, but he's been solid after the first 5 games

Also, in his last 9 games he's averaging:
20/5.6/3.2 on 50/47/83 with .603 TS

20 ppg on elite efficiency

For comparison's sake, he had 5 more shot attempts than points in his first 11 games, aka an Elfrid. In the last 9 games, RJ has 7 more points than shot attempts and free throws combined.
BaF Lakers:

Nikola Topic/Kasparas Jakucionis
VJ Edgecombe/Jrue Holiday
Shaedon Sharpe/Cedric Coward
Kyle Filipowski/Collin Murray-Boyles
Alex Sarr/Clint Capela

Bench: Malcolm Brogdon/Hansen Yang/Rocco Zikarsky/RJ Luis Jr.

This thread was prematurely started considering the abbreviated preseason and only a week into the regular season. What were people expecting with a 20-year-old starting his scond season with a new coaching staff?

For a bust, RJ has been pretty good.

I don't know if he can keep up the 3PT shooting, but it has been looking almost automatic the past 10 games. He definitely needed time to adjust his new form for NBA speed.

I doubt he keeps shooting 47% from 3, but if he can be a consistent 37%+ 3PT shooter, his whole game will open up. People are saying he will peak as a 2nd option, but the numbers he is putting up at 20 means that the sky is the limit for him.

People need to remember he is 20. He is younger than IQ and Obi, our most recent draft pics.

He is progressing in his 2nd season and that is what we needed to see; especially with Covid, no preseason/summer league, and having one of the harder schedules to start the season.

He is going to have up and down games, everyone does.

Right? Every since this thread was opened, it has looked like RJ will set the record for most allstar appearances by a bust.

I remember often reading, "Tank for Zion." Now I wonder if he's durable enough, if he will ever be a good defender, and if he's big enough to play the game he played in college. Meanwhile, RJ is looking more and more like he's the right size for a 2, and maybe for a 3.

I still think zion will be great but he's legit not right for the situation here. Might sound like sour grapes but i much prefer randle and rj ( hell even rj by himself) to zion at the moment at least

Yeah, he's def not a bust. Can we chage it to, "When will RJ be an All Star?"

We all heard that.

I wouldn't call him a bust. Hes def a rotation player
Agree

But at a top 3 pick. I dont see the star potential off these last 4 games
That's the problem with looking at a few games at the start of the season for a second year player.

We also wouldn't trade this year's Randle straight up for this year's (or last year's) Porzingis. Amazing how some things change over time.

He started playing better once this thread was made, for the sake of the Knicks we should never change the title of this thread.

My Hope is that this thread lives long for the next 15 years.
