Here's an old Stepien article from when Gray was a freshman...
Raiquan Gray is the premier fat upside guy for the 2020 draft. He’s a player perhaps best known for his game against Murray State, one where he not only helped to corral Ja Morant after a hot start, but also racked up 5 steals and three 3s in only 24 minutes.
Gray, despite looking somewhat out of shape at 260 pounds, can move, and there’s also the hint based on a not-bad looking jumper and the looks he’ll receive as a big that he’s going to eventually shoot as well.
5) Here’s the freshman per 40 numbers.
The most notable aspects here are perhaps the incredibly high rate of steals–approaching 3 per 40 despite being a PF/C and the notable lack of traditional big man stats in terms or rebounds (less than 8 per 40)–and blocks (less than 1 per 40).
6) That being said, we should expect the rebounding to improve this year now that Gray is no longer playing besides Kabengele and Koumadje, both notable giants. What’s perhaps more notable is that we should expect Gray’s passing numbers, 3-point volume, and percentages all to improve, while still being a ball hawk.
Expect a player that looks something like a splice of two of my all-time favorite college players: Draymond Green and Demetri Hill.
That is, you put some of the best parts of Draymond Green’s game into Demetri Hill’s body and then, despite the additional weight, add foot quickness and agility while at the same time removing vertical lift*, rim protection ability and natural rebounding chops.
Okay, that’s an admittedly weird description, and perhaps just an excuse to mention Hill. But there’s a reason that Gray has been handling the ball and passing it in FSU’s exhibitions, and that’s because these are legitimate latent talents that will likely be displayed in the coming season. Don’t be surprised if the player described above averages something around 16 points, 9 rebounds, 4.5 assists, 2.5 steals and half a block per 40 while shooting around 35 percent from 3. Which is to say, don’t be surprised if Raiquan Gray plays himself into the first round conversation. And perhaps beyond.
