It sounds as if Mason's role is to improve Anthony in practice. That was clearly not Bone's role, so this in itself makes sense.

Mason is clearly a mature player with loads of media training. A nice interview in my opinion.

Re: Magic sign Frank Mason to two way contract
We had to make a decision. Do we want to develop Bone or do we want to have anybody that can play the game already and can help us with teaching Cole. I think they made a good decision. We had literally no one who had any idea how to organize a team
My money is on Banchero going number 1 !

I like the sign. He's a guy who I wanted in the draft in the 2nd round. Hes not gonna move the needle but we dont need him too.

Re: Magic sign Frank Mason to two way contract
Teaching cole? lol its basketball not rocket science. If he can't figure it out as he plays against NBA players then he's just not good enough. Bring in someone like Frank Mason to "teach" him basketball? Is this a joke? I'm sure now Cole will magically be much better the rest of the season.

Frank Mason will give them some scoring and help them get through the year.
It will be interesting to see which of Jordan Bone or Karim Mane' is waived. My guess is Mane'.
My question to you is why do we need another point guard option? We're not going to make the playoffs and losing will happen anyway. There's no need to get someone who might win us an extra game or two just to still miss the playoffs and lose out on a higher pick.
I don't really agree that we needed to sign anybody. I think what we need to do is trade the vets that will win us games like Fournier, Gordon, Ross, potentially Vuc and starting losing more games so we can finally get a high draft pick.
If we were fully healthy, I would want to try to win every game. But we've lost two of our best players to injury for the year. Another one for 1-2 months. Most of our bench. There's no reason to win with this current roster though. I really don't want to give the 1st seed another bye week while we don't improve due to a lack of a great pick.
Edit: Or I wouldn't mind standing pat if, and only if, we rest our best players often enough that we still come out with a bottom 3 record.
This move was made to better get through the season.
It's swapping a Two-Way Player out.
More moves could come around The Trading Deadline.

For the record, I liked Frank Mason in The Draft for a second-round selection a few years ago.

I don't really see the need in incremental upgrades just to get spanked in the first round again at best. No matter who we sign or trade for, we still won't be getting Fultz or Isaac back this season. So our potential is severely limited.
Not really excited for any trades unless it's to dump the vets and bottom out for the year. The only one I would like to keep is Vuc so that we can improve for next season and field a good and competitive team with a brand new highly drafted rookie to go next to Fultz, Anthony, Isaac, and Vuc. Could have a great starting 5 depending on the rookie we draft if we draft high enough.
That could drastically change the direction and potential of this team for the price of tanking this one season. It's just not worth it for this year alone to compete and go for the playoffs.

This season is already lost. The question now is about developing players for next season (and moving assets around for assets that make more sense next season; but that's a topic for other threads).
In that, Mason's job is to train Anthony. Carter-Williams looks to be at least two-weeks away from a return and the Magic need Anthony to have a practice-squad buddy right now.

Cole has already been improving since before Mason joined the team. Not sure he even needs it. On top of that, he still has Fultz, Vuc, MCW and the vets to lean on for PG duties as well as other things he may need/want to know. Not even including the Coaching Staff.

This is not about "improving". It is about having an opponent player to work on/with in practice. Until Carter-Williams returns, that job is Mason's. And it is a job he should outperform Bone (if nothing else, because Mason is a better offensive player and this will help Anthony in the gym work on his on-the-ball defense).
Thus, waiving Bone to sign Mason makes sense for Anthony. Plus, Mason is probably better than Bone in-game and this upgrade cost Orlando Nothing, literally.

It's not a bad or damaging move in any way. I'm just hoping more moves are coming. Because Mason is not enough of an answer for all the problems this team is currently facing.

i wouldnt call Fultz a vet to lean on. And neither Fultz nor MCW can talk to him about shooting improvements.

I didn't call Fultz a vet. I said Cole has him and the vets to lean on. Also, I meant he can come to all of them for varying reasons. He obviously wouldn't go to those two for shooting. He'd go to Fournier, Ross, Vuc, and the coaches/trainers for stuff like that.
