Re: How would you fill out the roster?
We're still 2nd in the East, I'm not going to overreact to a very frustrating, disheartening loss. We look incapable of protecting a lead, we look small in big moments. We look shook, and as I've said before it all starts with physicality. This manifests most prominently in our lazy defense, but it spills into other areas.
We're not making a giant move, but I agree with others that the FA and buyout markets aren't going to save us. It literally pains me to think of trading Spencer, but I think it's time to shop him. His salary can help us match for a defensive / hustle stud in a trade. We need at least one elite junkyard dog to balance our this roster. Covington has looked bad on Portland, and their season is on the skids. They might be inclined to sell him cheap for cap savings.

Roco
Aaron Gordon
Terrence Ross and Birch
Harrison Barnes
Norm Powell and Baynes
Steven Adams and Hart
These guys all have to be options

I don't think Portland are giving up on RoCo easily after they gave up two first round picks for him.

Re: How would you fill out the roster?
Jarrett Allen got his first start tonight and killed it. Hes clearly their Center of the future.
Its only a matter of time till they get rid of Drummond. Either through trade or buyout.
I don't see them trading him unless they get back a First Rounder though. Do we believe any contending team does that?
LAL, LAC, MI, PHI, DEN don't need a Center.
Possibly Boston?
Otherwise he probably gets bought out and comes here.

Re: How would you fill out the roster?
I'm still not convinced that Andre would leave money on the table to come to us or any other team via buyout. He also would reset his Bird Rights, and some NBA players fear the stigma of being a buyout guy. He's 27 after all, not 37. If he accepts table scraps now in order to contend, the rationale among agents is that their client may get frozen out of major free agent money in the offseason.
Also, we'd be lucky to get him, and on our talent he'd be an upgrade. But his numbers are sorta empty calories toward winning, and his usage rate is gigantic for his limited he is offensively. Is he willing to sacrifice and just be a supreme grunt work dude???

Barnes and Holmes In a package would be great. Holmes is a great athletic rim runner and protector and Barnes is a solid wing

He won't lose money since we can offer him up to 5 mill. Will he give up more than that unlikely?
Hes not getting a big contract anyway this off season. He knows that. The best way to increase his value is to win a Championship on a contending team like Morris did last season.
His numbers are not empty calories. The Cavs are very good this year in large part due to him.
There is no way he comes here to take away shots from the Big 3. Hes not stupid.

Re: How would you fill out the roster?
Quick update to this thread, Woj was on ESPN last night talking about Nets potential moves. He brought up Drummond but said that Drummond isn't interested in a buyout yet, but if Cleveland don't find a trade for him, a Drummond buyout could become a possibility. Perhaps more interestingly, he said that teams have called the Nets for Dinwiddie, as they're interested in having his bird rights, so there's actually a market out there for Dinwiddie even with the injury. He's not a zero value asset that many here thought.

Well Marks needs to make that asset work. We need a center badly

Re: How would you fill out the roster?
There aren't many good center options in that salary range. I'd rather look at a wing defender with Dinwiddie's contract, and find a center option with buyout/DPE/MLE.MrDollarBills wrote:DarkXaero wrote:Quick update to this thread, Woj was on ESPN last night talking about Nets potential moves. Marks needs to be careful. you cant deal dinwiddie for a big and then have nash glue him to the bench to play green at center for 35 minutes. I think there is an enormous disconnect between marks and nash. but he cant fire him because of optics.

I dont think we can go wing defender. nash already doesnt play brown much and didnt play shump tonight. We need to improve our offensive role guys because nash has shown he is only going to play offensive players

Re: How would you fill out the roster?
No need to be overdramatic or overemotional. Brown has gotten plenty of playing time lately (and hasn't played well lately either). Pelle made his debut tonight after getting a practice in. Shumpert will start getting some minutes when he has more time with the team. Shumpert and Pelle aren't really NBA players in the first place, and Brown is a major liability offensively because of his non-shooting from guard position. Also none of our defenders are great enough in the first place.Prokorov wrote:DarkXaero wrote:There aren't many good center options in that salary range. Re: How would you fill out the roster?
while I value team defense and particularly paint protection for this roster we are lacking a perimeter defender. A designated defender. Someone we can put on Giannis/AD or Lebron/Kawhi/Tatum(but Durant should be able to maintain)/Joker(instead of letting our paint protector be dragged to the perimeter away from duties) etc.
Aaron Gordon for Spencer/Shamet/TJ(picks either to us or to them. Last season all reports of this trade had the 2nd rounders to us but now to them). He’s also posting 13/7/4 with 36% from deep. It’s the closest we could get to RoCo and that’s world changing for us.
We wouldn’t have any trade assets left but Claxton and until we see him I wouldn’t even think of moving him. He was supposed to be a stretch 5 rim protector with SF skills. I also like Bruce a lot but he doesn’t stretch the floor. He and Claxton are mystery fits on a complete roster but another 3&D shooter wouldn’t hurt.
Obviously the buyout is the last resource we have for this season. With the DPE and MLE at the very least two players will be coming after March 25. More if they convince players to split the MLE(at 5.7, that’s unlikely).
Kyrie
Harden/Joe
KD
Gordon/Green
Buyout Big(Drummond I hope)/DJ
That’s the core. This year and next and the year after. Even if Spencer(tho likely because we CAN’T risk a core contract walking away without a replacement) isn’t traded the only real contracts we have are the big 3/Joe/DJ/Spencer. Green likely will be kept because of fit in the locker room, his desire to win and his on court production. The Buyout big will likely get the MLE and the team will try to sign them for this and at least next season(MLE is bi-annual, there’s no use in a one year deal . Two is nearly mandatory so you can have it again 2023).

Re: How would you fill out the roster?
Starting to think Marks actually doesn’t know how to fill out a roster. We have like two players that are any good on defense and almost no legit size that can rebound and defend the rim, so let’s look to get Derrick Rose?
Yes, we lack a bench punch without Dinwiddie, and we desperately needed another good playmaker outside of Harden last night...but that’s such a rare occurrence, given that both Kyrie and KD were out. Under normal circumstances, we have all 3, and we don’t need a bench punch, because one of those guys will always be on the court and essentially replaces Dinwiddie’s role.
We have to stop loading up on offensive guards and actually look to acquiring bigs that can help.

We could’ve easily had him likely for Shamet, TLC or TJ and a 2nd rounder. Pistons went with DSJ as their high upside project instead.
We don’t have any real guard depth off the bench beyond Kyrie and Harden right now. Rose could’ve been a great backup PG next to Shump and Bruce Brown who isn’t a actual natural PG. Makes sense. The entire bench needs a revamp outside of the SG position.
Remains to be seen what Shumpert really brings but we are really looking at Brown and possibly, Shamet as the only consistent bench guys as of now. That’s not good enough. Rose could’ve helped a lot. It wouldn’t have impacted our ability to add Drummond or any MLE candidates either.

Let's be realistic. We had great depth. Marks did a great job filling out the roster. Then Dinwiddie went down. Then we pulled of a trade of 3 rotation players for a star. Trying to fill a net of 3 rotation players midseason, pre-deadline, pre-buyout season is an impossible task. He is maintaining maximum flexibility by signing 2 guys to non-guaranteed deals, with the expectation that we'll be able to clean up after buyouts start happening.
