Re: Bucks News, Trade Ideas, Transactions
DJW is just not good, it's that simple. He has shown nothing in summer league, preseason, regular season, D league, and must not in practice either. He's first round pick, he's been giving every chance to show himself and he hasn't. There is no reason to think he's good. As proven by Wood, coaches do make mistakes but it's very tough to see that here with how bad this guy has been in every chance he's had to show himself the last 3-4 years. What a dumb move it was to pick up his option for this year. This was obvious with Thon too and that has only proven true.
Hopefully they can dump him on someone and get out of this money and get a depth big guy in. If one of the 3 bigs goes down they're really thin.

Guess we’re about to find out what they have in DJA, Forbes, and Craig since I would assume they keep soaking up Jrue’s minutes over the next at least five games.
not trying to be argumentative, but has anyone confirmed for sure that it wasn't a false positive test?
Nobody has confirmed that he tested positive at all. I'm just going based on Middleton's slip up and the fact that the Bucks haven't denied it.

Erm no. We're limited as is with what we can deal in outgoing salary. That 4.5 million could end up paying dividends. Ersan would have been extremely useful too and I advocated as such for some time prior to his being waived, but we **** the bed with the Bogdanovic deal and our hand was forced.

True. However, if we never picked it up though we'd have just had the space in the summer to give more flexibility on everything they did or tried to do. Or, he'd have been an expiring to be used last year. Overall, it's just not good to have a guy who can't play in the league as a 5ish mil hit on your books.
I agree on the Ersan thing all the way. Well, take that as an example. Maybe without DJ we'd have been able to hold Ersan and have him to play right now, or be a tradeable contract of a competent bench player as opposed to dead weight like it is now.

Not picking it up would not have given us space. We were over the cap, and that's why exceptions were used. His option didn't have an effect on those exceptions. Could we have had one or two minimum deals to throw out? Yes. His salary slot gives us MORE flexibility than we would have otherwise. It's not good to have a guy who can't play in the league as a 5ish million hit on your books, it's worse when you're in the salary situation we are actually in and you don't have a trade-able 4.5 million deal at your disposal to match salary.

Isn't DJW salary pushing them 4.5 million closer to that hard cap which is why they can't sign any vets until a certain date? And why if they make no trades they can sign on buyout guy at the most?
If they end up using his salary slot in a trade to get another bench piece then great. If they just let him play out the season, what a waste of a draft pick, salary slot, and roster space for four years. Clocking is ticking on them turning that pick into anything. Kind of glad they got rid of a bunch of future firsts since I'm still convinced Horst's main scouting method is watching March Madness.

There's basically no reason for Midds to say Jrue tested positive if Jrue didn't. And no reason for the Bucks to not immediately deny it if Midds did mis-speak. So, it's pretty much a fact that Jrue tested positive. Could it be a false positive? Sure. Something like 20%-40% odds depending on the test, no? Are the odds that it is an actual positive especially with the more contagious version spreading now? Absolutely.
It's pretty safe to assume no Jrue for the next five games at least. Probably six since game six is the very first day he could be back and they are not going to just throw him out there the second he is cleared. Tough stretch to lose him with three big road games and then two Raps games in three days.

The way the NBA tests, the false positive rate is <1%. Remember, not a single person tested positive in the Orlando campus last season.

It is but that decision was made well before the hard cap came to fruition (It's actually the Connaughton deal that basically ruined any minimum/buyout flexibility given the immediacy of the timeframe or the Augustin deal which actually triggered the hard cap). Obviously if they don't make a deal it will have been a waste. Me personally? I'd rather have some trade flexibility at the deadline rather than another minimum deal during the offseason.

It's too bad Jrue will be missing games at this point in the season. He was playing great but this time out of the spotlight will probably put the final nail in the coffin of any all star hopes he may have had.

Ah. I was unaware what testing they were using. Then yeah, hopefully he is back by Feb 21.

unless he has symptoms, I don't see why not. He can stay in shape and it's not like he'll forget how to play basketball.

Re: Bucks News, Trade Ideas, Transactions
Predictions for Jrue signing an extension during the season? I believe he's eligible on 2/26 and the Bucks will try to take care of that before making any trades because knowing he wants to stay, if he does, would make it a lot easier to plan for the future.
Numbers are down and he'll be 31 in June. The trade was unsettling to begin with but it will be a nightmare if he doesn't extend eventually, and preferably this season. I've been assuming all along that he'll get a max contract from someone and might try to get a 5-year max from the Bucks, but I've allowed myself to entertain the hope that he will settle for 4/$120m or something like that. He's not like KD where he can afford to gamble on his health and assume the same money will be there this summer if he gets hurt. He's not really a floor general and he seems to keep his efficiency up by being very choosy about his attempts. Great defender, but that doesn't always get paid in free agency.

To be fair numbers are down on volume and efficiency is through the roof.

In general, I like how selective he's being and I wish more 3rd options would be like him. However, he does leave me wanting more in terms of being aggressive. I think there are multiple possessions nearly every game where he should be looking for his shot more because Khris draws the other team's best perimeter defender and multiple guys are shading Giannis, or maybe just because nobody has anything going or one of them is on the bench. He would sacrifice some of his efficiency by doing so, but the team's offense would be even better.
I'm very happy with him otherwise, maybe even more so than expected. I'm just saying it's possible that he will get a little underpaid because of it. He doesn't have a history of being anything special as a 1st or 2nd option. If anything, he's actually been pretty inefficient when he's had to carry a larger scoring burden. Lead guards who need a smaller role to be efficient don't always command max contracts at his age, so I'm talking myself into hoping he will extend for less than the max.

I just checked and a Jrue max contract would start at 38 mil per year and top out at 50 mil in year 5. Yikes.
I love Jrue, but he is not dynamic enough on offense to command that kind of salary. Do we have to pay him that much to keep him? Maybe.
Although we already gutted our depth and went bargain hunting to fill the gaps and are still a great team, so as long as the luxury tax isnt a problem we should be okay. Thats just a mammoth contract.

Trade the DJ's and SRP to Dallas for Josh Richardson. He has a payer option next year so it would probably be a half year rental. His 3 point percentage is way down this year so a change of scenery might be welcome.
Then sign Napier and Ersan.
Holiday - DDV - Napier
Forbes - Richardson - Pat - Merrill
Middleton - Craig - Nwora
Giannis - Ersan - Thanasis
Lopez - Portis

Dealing with people who exhibit the "smartest person in the room" syndrome can be a challenge. One approach is to listen their opinion while also encouraging open-mindedness. It's important to create an environment where all voices are valued.
