Since this thread is still alive...

Someone may already have posted this, but if so I missed it. I took a look at the Raptors roster, & it knocked me for a loop. I've never seen anything like it.

The Raptors have 16 players on their roster:

7 of them are undrafted guys: Baynes, Boucher, VanVleet, Watanabe, Watson, Davis, Thomas
1 is a #59 pick (you can't get much closer to undrafted than that!): Harris
2 others were R2 – Powell #46, whom they drafted #46 & Patrick McCaw picked #38 by GS -- he's a reclamation project, on his 3d team, & is injured
5 players are from the last 1/3 of R1 – Anunoby #23, Bembry #21 (another reclamation project: let go by the Hawks), Flynn #29, Lowry #24, & Siakam #27
1 lottery pick: johnson #8 (again a reclamation project -- on his 3d team)

I can't remember anything similar... ever. 10 guys either undrafted or R2. 4 guys they drafted in the last few years at the average of #25. Lowry from long ago. Stanley Johnson.

Ok, there are good FOs & not so good -- but this is in a different universe. These guys seem to be geniuses.

Yep, Memphis has been killing it lately IN the draft lately but Toronto's ability to find gems everywhere is stunning. Maybe we'll get lucky this year and Leonsis makes Masai an insane offer with an ownership stake attached. I can dream right?

I would be interested to see Kevin Broom’s evaluation ratings for each of these Toronto players. The draft is kind of a crapshoot and a beauty contest. There’s probably some common traits that were apparent before the drafting for each that would have predicted success.

Somebody out there has this thing on a metric or a curve. Either that or Masai is some sort of warlock or which doctor. Yeah there’s a racist black magic joke in there somewhere. I can go there though. :-)

Jerry West is another one. He’s got some sort of amulet. Got to be why he’s so good at evaluating talent.
Tre Johnson is the future of the Wizards.

Its a crapshoot because all development curves are not equal. Some plateau in college, some not until their 15th year. Its very hard to determine/predict how hard someone will work after they've realized their dreams.

I think it's their player development program. Yeah, they draft players with potential, but it takes a good system to develop them.

Certainly that must be the case, nate, but however significant it can only be a small part of the picture. These guys have to have talent beyond the evaluations of them made by other teams.

Chris Boucher, for example, played in the Pac 12. He started as a rookie & posted outstanding numbers. Not quite as good as a Sophomore. Then he declared for the draft, & nobody picked him. Why... who knows?

Terence Davis was a good college player as well. Especially his Sophomore year.

Beats me....
