Early 2000s Shaq would do that to anyone. Maybe not a prime Akeem, and Shaq struggled a little bit against Timmy D (at times), but other than that, Shaq could easily drop 45 on ANYBODY.
Easily?
No...he scored 40 or more 49 times, and made 45 twelve times.
Which is awesome, and he was a legit all-timer. But he couldn't easily score 45 on anyone. That's revisionist history.
Jokic did it and he didn’t even work all that hard. Joel fouled out Rudy last season when they played. I don’t see why Shaq wouldn’t do the same. It’s not like Rudy is going to make Shaq leave the paint on defense. It’s actually a very favourable matchup when you think about it for Shaq

Except Jokic got it rolling in the 1st against Bojan and not Rudy(you can question the coaching decision on defensive assignments there, although... I wouldn't say it's unreasonable having in mind our defensive scheme revolves around Rudy defending the paint rather than defending a specific player... in general the Jazz will put Gobert on anyone that gives him the chance to not get extended to the 3p line and be a force inside). And Joel Embiid is shooting like... 42% against Gobert for his career.
I think people massively overestimate the difference between past-time greats and current time greats. Yeah, sure, Shaq was a monster before and would be a monster now and would never really truly be stopped. But if you think his fantasy land make belief cringe from the OP is reasonable I have a bridge to sell you. Gobert is one of the best defenders of this generation. Get this through your heads guys. You might not like him, you might think he looks awkward as hell, you might not think he deserves his contract... whatever, if you think this would be a one-sided destruction afair you are delusional.

Third quarter of that game he got benched for favours because he was getting killed. He got killed by Jokic in the bubble. Embiid draws a lot of fouls against him, although he his in fact shooting a low percentage against Utah, does that matter if he’s sitting alone at the line 18 times and hitting 16? He is the defensive player of the year no question. But he cannot guard superstar bigs the way that say gasoline in his prime did, Wallace. Shaq got swept , but he gave Hakeem 28 a night on almost 60 percent from the field at 22 in the finals. If Jokic got 30 on this guy every game in the playoffs. Then goes for 47 don’t make excuses about scheme. They Kept him in the paint Jokic got hot. Went on the block and had fun on Rudy like he didn’t care who he was. He failed to score two times while guarded by Rudy. Once, a baseline jumper. The other time he drove and missed..... got his own rebound twice and scored over Rudy anyway. Shaq can’t do that? Please.

shaq would break gobert like a twig. gobert would back down after the first quarter or he'd break trying to stop shaq.
but we know this already. gobert's not even a top30 center, but shaq shouldn't be wasting his time on him, it's embarrassing

What playoffs did you watch? This is what I'm talking about ... you have no idea what you are talking about if you think this was a one-sided matchup. "GOD KILLED". People don't allow for good matchup with a winner. Everything has to be "got killed", "he annihilated him", "absolutely destroyed". No he didn't get killed. It was a good even matchup that Jokic, who is arguably the most talented offensive big of this generation, won. Great offensive players will have some great games even against the best of defenders. Expecting ANYONE to KILL, ANNIHILATE, DOMINATE, DESTROY(whatever else hype word you want to use) the best defensive big of the generation with consistency is delusional. It has never happened before and it won't happen in the future... I guess it only has a chance of happening in imaginary dream situations. AD is shooting 49% TS vs GObert, Embiid is in the low 40s from the field and in the 40s TS.... pretty much every big in the league has harder time against Gobert than against the rest of the league. But no, Shaq will go for 15 points and 5 rebounds over his averages at the top of his career against the best defensive big of this generation(oh and he will do it in 3 quarters). This is what passes as a legitimate argument and opinion here nowadays. It should be immediately obvious how laughable this one is. Get the **** out of here with this BS.

Re: Shaq says he would’ve dropped 45 & 16 on Rudy Gobert in 3 quarters
most of those games were when ad was a pelican and could be cheated off with lots of hel, he’s played embiid like 6 times in like five years, two of which were last season sharing the floor with horford and Simmons with Bret brown coaching. Shaw gave robinson and prime tim 42. Utah’s defense isn’t San Antonio. I agree Rudy is an excellent help defender but don’t even bring up ad if you aren’t going to talk about last season how ad played against Rudy. Jokic is generational, he’s not as good as Shaq. Rudy doesn’t have the strength. He gave mutumbo 40+ and he has the same length As Rudy. That’s it that’s the game. If you don’t have enough of those things, you can’t guard Shaquille O’Neil. There’s no outsmarting him using your quickness. There’s no zone that can stop him. If you can’t stop him, you better score on him and Rudy can’t do that either. Shaq is a top 5 talent to touch a ball. He can give anyone who’s ever walked earth 45 before digesting his dinnerstitches wrote:Lockdown504090 wrote:Third quarter of that game he got benched for favours because he was getting killed. Of course, he would. Did you see him against Dikembe Mutombo, busting him in the chops with elbows and getting away with it.

Shaq would not be anything near the focal point of a team’s offense in this league. Wouldn’t get enough minutes or touches to score that much.

Maybe Shaq is being impolite in stating this but I don't get what this fans are whining about. Shaq is 100% correct. He would demolished Gobert. Those are facts, nothing against Gobert.

That is a lie. He never scored 40 are more against Tim Duncan. I know this because a few years ago I looked up all the box scores of every game Duncan had against Shaq including the playoffs. Shaq did have some 30 point games against Duncan but he never got 40 on him.

he's not wrong. There isn't anyone who could stop him. Teams would be in the penalty 5 minutes into each quarter. You'd have guys like Lopez and Theis trying to stop him lmao. And because of his presence shooters would be left wide open all over the court due to having to collapse and double/triple team him.

Shaq is going to get his points against every big in nba history. No one in nba history would be able slow him down. Even in the finals against Hakeem he still put up huge numbers.

Gobert would still be good, but would have been handled by the bigs and style of play of the 90s/early 2ks.
No way Gobert gets close to a max contract in the 90's NBA playstyle.
Why comment if you don't know what you're talking about?

LOL. Reeves was a prototypical big man of the era and had good offensive scoring ability. Injuries killed his career. Dampier had one good year and got a massive overpay as it was a contract year, and that contract was 2005+ when Shaq was in his twilight. Using two examples of bad contracts does not make much of a point.
Rudy would have been pushed around in the 90s. He still would have been very good, but with a lesser impact. Players would have went through him.
Then again, can you imagine Shaq or Rudy in the 70s NBA? Both would absolutely dominate.

Lol you’re kidding right? Prime Shaq surrounded with four shooters would absolutely be the focal point of an offense and would foul out most bigs.
I also read on another page someone say something about Conley & Gobert in a P&R lol give me a break.

They’d literally have to triple team him on every play. Also I love the defense talk about Shaq clown takes

Whys that? because he can't shot a 3? some how one of the most dominant bigs of all time with amazing passing ability wouldn't get much minutes in todays league. Clearly you don't know what you're talking about.
