Hes waiting on K to retire.
It’s his dream job, and it’s not that far off from happening.

Why would you choose coaching kids over coaching in the best league in the world?
I don't understand.

Deck is stacked in his favor at Duke. Probably the program set to excel more than any other once Coach K retires. High schoolers back in the NBA won't hurt Duke as much as some other programs.
On the other hand, Celtics as of right now are not as well positioned. Ainge has all of the Celtics picks but the trade market is a bit of of whack and the Celtics contract situation is no longer that great.
I would much rather have a highly paid college coaching job at let's say Duke than coach Celtics or even Lakers if the money was the same. Less scrutiny. Yes, Duke fans expect championships much more often than lesser programs but if you at least make the Final Four even at Duke, it is usually considered a very good season. Make the Final Four in the NBA and a lot of knowledgeable fans are not really impressed since the Eastern Conference outside of Lebron has often been crap. And even with Lebron, Cavs were very weak one year in which they made the finals.
Much less travel in college. Less games/shorter games. More authority. You need to work a lot less hours especially if you hand off a lot of the preliminary recruiting to assistants. Less practice time.
Coaching at much lesser ACC teams, is a different story.
But realistically, coaching Duke basketball right now is probably #1 basketball coaching job in America. Coach K even has time to do stuff like Coaching clinics. Coach K turned down the Celtics for a reason. Duke was the better program/job at the time so even the Celtics offering more money couldn't persuade him. If Coach K was at Kentucky instead of Duke, I think he would have left Kentucky.
But if you have been in the Chapel Hill area, you wouldn't leave Duke for the Celtics either.
Some may say coach of Lakers is the better job but even not figuring in my dislike of the Lakers, I'd much rather coach Duke despite LA arguably being the better place to live if you are incredibly rich. Lakers win, GM/players rightfully get most of the credit. Duke wins, the coach probably gets more credit than he deserves.
Stevens would probably be a moron to bypass Duke to stay with the Celtics unless family considerations or loyalty to Indiana(Butler) were primary motivator.
