Wow. He had a decent record in a tough SEC division and can recruit very well in the south.

If he sticks around and is invested in UCF, this could be a very good hire.

Hopefully the playoffs get expanded and the concept of “Power 5” is less important.

Definitely the big name hire. I’m actually surprised he accepted the position. Hopefully the team gives him a chance.

yeah, no. Malzahn wasnt a good recruiter at Auburn, couldnt adjust and his teams got worse and worse. you could do worse, its just another retread. If he does well, he will jump ship again.

Today they hired the biggest name on the market. I hope it works out. It’s going to depend on the coaching hires to fill out the staff.

While I am not super excited over the hire, he actually did pretty good in recruiting. 2019- ranked 11th in the nation 2018- 12th 2017-9th 2016- 9th 2015- 8th 2014-6th.

He wasn’t up to the standards of ‘Bama and hence he lost his job at Auburn but his recruiting experience will be an upgrade at UCF.

problem is, he was supposed to be some offensive genius. But none of his offensive players developed well. it was their defensive players that were getting drafted. I'm just not a believer in Malzahn. I hope he does well, my wife graduated from UCF, i just dont think he will.

Josh Heupel was considered a great offensive coach, but all we saw was receivers running down field and Gabriel throw a bomb.. Anything is better than that in my eyes.

I may be wrong, but I believe the defense played in the AAC is a tad bit less intense than the SEC??

His offense should shine a bit brighter at UCF.

No ones giving him a pass for his results at Auburn but it is a good grab for UCF.

It’s all relative man.

I dont know enough about Malzahn to have too much of an opinion but I'd definitely be on board with a change there. I wonder how much cash UCF is laying out for all of this after you factor in what's coming back in buyouts owed to them.

I wouldn’t go that far to say that. He said they needed to have a conversation. Shannon has to want to work for him as well.

Also to put this out there... salary pool for assistants is 3.3 million.

Ok. I'm getting convinced.

Dennis Dodd, Senior College Football Writer

"I'm having a hard time finding anything wrong with this hire. In fact, you can make the case that this is the best hire for a Group of 5 school since we started calling them a Group of 5."

"Gus Malzahn, I think, kills it at UCF."

"There's nothing negative to say about Gus's recruiting. When you're going against Alabama, head-to-head, 24/7, 365, I think he's done a hell of a job."

Barrett Sallee, College Football Writer

"It's a great hire for UCF. Gus Malzahn will get the Knights back to a New Year's Six Bowl Game, I have absolutely no doubt about this."

"It's kind of ironic: Tennessee hires Josh Heupel away from UCF and UCF still comes in with the better end of the deal."

"I wouldn't be surprised at all if this is a marriage that lasts until Gus Malzahn wants to retire. It does depend on what the fit is at other Power 5 jobs. He's not going to jump to a random Power 5 job that he can't be successful with, there's no doubt in my mind."

"He wants to win. And he understands that he can win, successfully recruiting in south and central Florida. So I think UCF, they didn't get a short-timer; they got a long-term solution as long as the best of the best Power 5 coaching jobs don't open up and even if that does happen, I think it still remains to be seen how attractive he would be to those jobs knowing that sometimes they just wouldn't be good fits for guys who run offenses like Gus."

I didn't want Malzahn because of the poor track record for P5 coaches taking the "step back" into the G5, but he definitely appeared motivated in his press conference.

We'll see how it goes.
