I don't favor a rental, even if it's a low cost trade. The Hornets simply MUST learn from the Batum albatross. But I do favor trading for Drummond if he agreed to a reasonable contract extension and the return to Cleveland is no greater than Terry Rozier and a second round pick. I think Charlotte has the cap space to absorb the difference in salaries.

Drummond would provide an instant upgrade at a critical position, one of weakness for the Hornets. Would the Hornets remain on the treadmill even with Drummond on board? Would losing Rozier be a net loss with the subtraction of his shooting, toughness and playmaking? How would Charlotte compensate for the loss of Rozier? Graham, a Martin? Is this the kind of trade the Hornets have to make to build a sustained winner? Or should they stay put and hope Richards, Carey or a future pick pans out? Or maybe even look to sign Drummond this summer (if he doesn't sign an extension with a trading team)?

I don't really expect the Hornets to make a serious offer for Drummond. He's pricey and he thinks he's a guard sometimes. I think they'll take a look, maybe even make a phone call or two, then pass.

Drummond checks a whole lot of boxes, though. Shure would be nice to not to have to apologize for a significant deficiency in rebounding every game. Also would be nice to have a decent matchup to the behemoths in the East.

I really have no interest in Drummond, and definitely not giving up Rozier for him.

What are your reasons for lack of interest?

I love his rebounding, but do not like any other part of his game. He is a high usage, low efficiency offensive player that makes way to much money, and complains when he isn't getting the ball.

Also, Cleveland will probably look for a 1st and if I am trading a 1st, I am going after John Collins instead

I’d rather trade our 2021 top 10 protected 1st round pick for Jackson Hayes.

How much Hayes have you watched? Is it not alarming to you that he is not playing over Billy Hernangomez?

It is not like Pelicans are so desperate to win they aren't playing youth either. They are horrible and he still isn't getting minutes so that is a huge red flag for me honestly.

Drummond isn't awful. He does help with rebounding and he gives you some size to prevent teams from being able to exploit our size issues. However, he is simply overpaid. It is not even the fact he makes a bunch of money this year because I really could care less. It is the fact that you have to find 28 Million dollars in outgoing salary to match him in a deal, for us that is nearly impossible.

It will be difficult for other teams too, but I think somebody will have an easier way to get to that dollar amount then us. If he was making 10 Million it would be much easier to trade for and his demand would be way higher.

I think this is why the Hornets take a look but pass. Making the trade is doable by eating into the cap and including, say, Biyombo along with Rozier. But that's a high price and, as others and you have pointed out, just not worth the cost.

Meanwhile, the Hornets are a Zeller hangnail from real problems making it to, or out of, the play-in tournament.

Ha - 'bout sums it up for me as well. Much rather have a maxed Collins for say PJ (or, best case, Biz expiring) and a FRP than Drummond, and not even sure I want that.

I will never understand why so many people STILL want to trade Rozier.

He's clearly ahead of Devonte and Monk in the race to be Melo's Mate

Yeah unless we get something crazy in return, I don't have much interest in trading Rozier

What is a realistic trade for Collins? Maybe Graham and our top 5 protected 1st

For Drummond, I'd prefer Devonte + something. Expiring, for expiring. Seems like Cleveland traded for Drummond at the time to upgrade the 5, but found an even more promising, younger cheaper, higher upside guy in Allen. Now they are trading the vet.

I'm not saying Cleveland would take Graham + something that's not a FRP, but I also don't think CLE has as much leverage as they may think.

I don't understand why people want to give up assets and max Collins so bad... Sure he'd be fun on offense but our teams biggest weakness is rim protection and even PJ is a better defender than Collins...

In order to make salaries work to do a deal that sends out Graham and returns Drummond you have to do something like Graham + Zeller + Miles + Biz for Drummond straight up. Even Graham + Zeller + Biz + Martin2 + McDaniels isn't enough salary. You pretty much have to include Zeller and then two out of Monk, PJ, Miles, and Biz.

Drummond isn't even that good and might not even be better than Zeller for this team, so I don't see any way there is a deal there that makes sense for the Hornets.

Not cheerleading for it, but also wouldn't hate it. Think you have to look at it in a team building context. Collins provides reliable inside-outside offense and rebounding that's sorely lacking. He would be a solid 20/10 guy on the hornets and is only 23 so fits our LaMelo timeline. In terms of DRPM, he's also currently ranked 4th among PF's at 1.9 (just ahead of Anthony Davis) whereas PJ is 56th at -0.63, so I'm not really scared of him in defensive terms, and this could be offset by future moves at center.

Would I want to max him? Nope. But there's a good argument to be made that he would be a very important long term piece with far more value (and much more of a certain thing) than a middle lottery pick and PJ.

Exactly, in order to make a deal work for Drummond you need large salaries you do not care about like Batum. Hence why we were always linked to Drummond in the past because a deal was easy. It is no longer easy.

My guess is Dallas gets Drummond for something like James Johnson (16 mil)+ Powell (10 Mil)+ Josh Green or Tyrell Terry (first rounder this past year).
