Blake Griffin to sit out - anyone interested?

Post#1 » by FNQ » Mon Feb 15, 2021 7:40 pm

Rumor is a buyout could be coming, but I've never seen a buyout of this magnitude before. Would any team be desperate enough to swing a deal for Blake right now? Would the Pistons be willing to take an extra year of a player if said player wasn't so obviously quitting on the team (Westbrook?)

This is gonna be interesting

Detroit should absolutely not be taking on longer contracts unless they get paid for it, and I can't see anyone paying assets for Blake.

So I think a buyout is the likeliest, and perhaps best, outcome.

(And I'm pretty sure Orlando bought out Gilbert Arenas with $40M remaining on his contract so this isn't unprecedented, although there were amnesty ramnifications then too.)

Something to remember is that if these guys are bought out half way through, they will have already been paid 100% of their money for half this season. In Blake's case, you're talking about buying out the remaining $56M owed, not the $75M or whatever.

I don't know if Blake would ever want to come back to the Clippers, but our whole fanbase would be thrilled if he did.

The Pistons are 8-19.

Miami could trade Iggy, Leonard, Harkless and Bradley for Blake, Ellington and Svi

Dragic, Butler, Robinson, Griffin, Bam
Nunn, Herro, Ellington/Svi, Precious, Olynyk

I don't see it. Blake has virtually no on-court value at this point, and the Pistons shouldn't take on more money or give up assets to move him.

Buyout is much more likely.

He has been absolutley horrible this season. Its very possible he is simply cooked after his last injury.

I dont think there is a team out there willing to trade for him unless Detroit wants to take on the extra year of Westbrooks contract.

I think he is bought out at the end of the day.

The pistons already owe a conditional first, so we won't be trading any picks.

For what it's worth, Blake's actually been rounding into better playing shape. He looked like complete toast to start the season, but he's been moving better recently. Not sure if it matters since he'll probably be injured by the playoffs, but he's been taking charges and looking more fluid offensively.

No take backs.
Comments to rationalize bad contracts -
1) It's less than the MLE
2) He can be traded later
3) It's only __% of the cap
4) The cap is going up
5) It's only __ years
6) He's a good mentor/locker room guy

So the Pistons and Blake negotiate an amount, and the Pistons save the $$$ and cap for the difference? Is there any possibility the buyout is much less than what he has left on his deal?

I'd be surprised. I mean Blake is a min contract guy at this moment. So he's not recouping any money on a new deal next year so no reason for him to save Detroit much unless he just hates it there so much and is willing to sacrifice 8 figures to get free. Which may be true, but it would surprise me. I have him very much as an I want all my money guy.

Didn't the Pistons do something similar with Josh Smith like 10 years ago? He had a much lower salary though but more years left on his contract.

It works for Miami. They took on these contracts to have a go for a solid PF this coming off-season but he resigned and so did all the major free agents.

Griffin allows them to have a large contract come off the books for the 2022 free agent hunting off-season. Or trade a large expiring next year.

I imagine Miami could squeeze a pick out of it too. They also get a couple nice 3 shooters. An area they need help in right now.

I believe they stretched Josh. Don't give Weaver any ideas.

I think the only trade possibilities would be for another very large bad contract that runs a year longer, which is something the Pistons should clearly not be doing.

It will be a buyout I'm sure. Candidates of teams that might be interested when he is bought out?

Celtics
Heat
Lakers
Clippers (not sure he's up for that)
Suns

If anybody is untradable in the league, it's Blake.

I can't see any potential deal, at all.
