RJ deserves some love for all those off-ball picks he sets in the paint to free up Randle.

It's become a staple of Thibs's offense.

RJ does a lot of little dirty work type winning plays you don't expect from a young lottery pick.

Those aren't great yet but the ain't bad for a young guy. He's in striking distance, a few points in each category north and he's in the upper echelon of the NBA. His game translates better than a ball dominant PG and a chunky PF ... and we have Q and Randle to hold down those spots anyway!

I look at all these near misses that just rim out, some of the forced turnovers and the inconsistency with the jump shot and I get super excited.

These are all things that can and should go positive over time.

I see a 23/7/6 guy with solid efficiency and solid defense on the horizon. Just have to keep going through the growing pains

If it took Randle this long to begin to reach his potential, maybe we should give our other young players a lot more rope

The irony of this is that the people who want to trade RJ for LaVine or Beal, never go and look at what their stats were in their 2nd year. They're willing to gut our team for guys like that, not realizing that RJ is on the exact same path  It took until their 5th seasons for them to become 20ppg scorers.

Beal averaged 17ppg on 41% from the field his 2nd year, LaVine averaged 14ppg on 45%, and RJ is a better defender right now than either guy has ever been.

And passer. And rebounder.

Who’s trying to trade our cornerstone for these guys?!!! :noway:

The young draft ages of these players really screw with people's expectations. Even as great as Lebron was from the jump his first 5 years in the league were nothing compared to his prime. Julius is just starting to taste his prime and we are beginning to see the results but yet people be like yep RJ is a bust when his brain and body are literally years from being fully developed.

My preseason prediction was 16/6/3 on 43/33/71. If he wasn’t so horrendous the first couple games, he’d easily be out pacing my prediction. I wonder how much better he’d look with a better floor spacer at the point and a better jumper himself? Hopefully Randle grabs him and teaches whatever routine he had last summer made his jumper elite.

The kid is a grinder. And knock on wood, I hope he has a big underrated thing that maybe is largely responsible for Randle taking a leap: A strong and healthy body allows a player to keep ascending.

In a weird kind of way, I see RJ as kind of like a young version of the less athletic Larry Johnson the Knicks got. He can make clutch shots and I think his shooting will reach a pretty good plateau, and he'll be strong and skilled enough to score inside, and defend. And just a winner who you can rely on.

Mini-version of the NY edition of LJ.

LJ? I think you should go back to the drawing board with that one.

I notice this a lot lately. In all sports. And I guess all over the place in general. We are less patient. It’s no wonder, considering how much we have at our fingertips now. But it’s worth a reminder every so often. I’d pin the above post :)
I dunno.

On a related note...

Was thinking. Now that Julius Randle can't be the escapegoat, who will that title be passed to?

Odds:

Elfrid Payton - 3/1
Austin Rivers - 7/2
Kevin Knox - 10/1
Obi Toppin - 15/1
Frank Ntilikina - either 5/1 or 300/1 depending on who you ask.

2 most annoying things in his game for me are his still missing right hand and the lackluster turnovers. I mean, no coach has to do a big film session wit his squad on Barret, stop him penetrate over the left side and he is outside lookin in.
Do a damn fake throwing the pass to teammate or throw it with some strength!

Really, turnovers? RJ has a stupid low turnover rate, especially for someone so inexperienced. :-/
